I have Samsung D6000 46"TV and an Onkyo 3500. Currently I don't have plans to buy either a Blu Ray Player or a Media player. I decided to postpone the purchase of the Media player since my TV plays most of the video files from the USB port if I connect a HDD. However couple of my friends were suggesting that my TV may not have the sufficient encoding decoding capacity to give the best video/audio compared to if I have a Media Player or Blu Ray Player.

Can someone help me in this regards?

Its replaces my media player completely,u can use optical out from the tv to the amp for sound.I dont know what you mean by "sufficient",but if you are looking for hd audio you need a blu ray player.or else right now your setup seems fine....enjoy

Hi Andy,

I have a D8000 which so far have played all media files from my hard disk. I believe the D6000 too is very much capable of doing the same.

Therefore, I honestly dont think you need a media player for movies. For sound, again many of the available movie files would have HD sound , which you can extract by using the method suggested by Saurabh above.

As far your requirement u are gonna play mkv files(avc video codec and ac3/dts audio codec) most of the times. As I can tell u there is an option called reframes/reference frames in avc codec which controls the number of frames gonna follow after a particular frame which is kept as referenece. Now some of the mkvs u found on net gonna be encoded using 5 reframes. Your tv can render uplto that much frame..other encoded mkvs with more than 5-6(upper limit 16) need powerful video renderer and processor to decode..and u can't playback those files..only option is to reencode the whole thing again which may take 1 day to finish.
So it is better to go with a good media player/bluray player where these files can easily be decoded.

Thanks for your reply. Can I check the details like frames per second etc using some software?

yes you can use the software MediaInfo for information about AV files>

download from here MediaInfo

Frames per second is visible in Windows 7 itself. mediainfotool is the best tool to analyze your media files.

Re: Will my Samsung D6000 have decent encoding/decoding capacity for playing USB buil

It is not number of frames per second..it is reference frame..u can see that using mediainfo. If u have kmplayer or media player classic installed in your pc..u can see in properties of the file under the name of Reframes.
