YouTube Music will let you search by humming into your Android phone

Interesting.
From time to time I run into a situation where I need to use Google's assistant to fire up a new tune (Call our an Artist), especially when I am in the car and can't change tracks. Sometimes, I get stuck where I know the song but can't remember the Artist.

My only con to this idea is that you will not longer work your brain to remember the Artist name.

Shazam app has been doing music identification since several years. You may want to try this too

Oh I know Shazaam. Been using the app for a number of years.
I was referring to the new feature on You Tube music, where you hum the tune to identify the Artist. Usually, you'd push your brain to remember the tune, the track and eventually get it. With this new feature, it makes you skip that process as you now have something easier.

This is a useful feature for instrumental music.
I used it just a couple of days back - had got a just a phrase of a tune stuck in my head and could not place the source. I even knew it was Beethoven but couldn't trace the exact track. Google threw up this solution and I was able to trace it by whistling into the mic. This was the track

True. Smart gadgets do make us dumb. We need to keep searching for other/ more challenging tasks that the gadgets/apps don’t do yet, to keep us sharpened.

Humming recognition was available on Shazam also for quite some time now ...
I didn’t find any option in Shazam (in iOS) for this. How to access it?

Good thing that they are implementing it within the Music app itself. It was available in Google app already. Here are the screenshots of me trying humming (successfully 😊) in the Google app on iPhone.

Hopefully Apple Music (my go-to streaming platform) will implement similar functionality soon.

The (over)use of Google maps is a perfect example of this. People are already losing the ability to remember routes or follow verbal directions to find a place. The other day I was suprised to see someone who is a native of the city set up a route between two locations which are essentially well known landmarks.
Sometimes I miss stopping and asking a paanwala for directions !

If there is a road closure or very heavy congestion the maps suggest alternate routes…useful if you don’t want to be late for whatever?

And when you do hum then YouTube or Shazam will say “Hamara Shibashis koshis kar raha hai”?🙂
Far from it, a safer bet is for it to look for the nearest source of EMP and die. Coming to think of it my humming will be preserved for that inevitable battle against Skynet.
