The palm of my left hand feels burned up while writing this review to say the least.

You will know more as you read on. After some serious contemplation on which phone to buy I finally bought Samsung Wave for 18K a few days back. On the 8th of August I had started another Thread here about some of my doubts with the Samsung Galaxy Android Operating system -

Samsung Galaxy S Android Phone - Is Eclair 2.1 upgradeable to Froyo 2.2
http://www.hifivision.com/what-shou...phone-eclair-2-1-upgradeable-froyo-2-2-a.html

Although I had made up my mind to go for the Galaxy I backed out at the last moment decided to get the wave. As of now it seems like a wrong decision. Firstly the good points : -

1) The Super Amoled display is totally awesome and really bright. This is the highlight of the phone. The UI appears quite pleasing to the eye.
2) 5 MP Camera is of decent quality but nothing exceptional. No way near a proper digital 5 MP camera. The HD video recording is excellent though.
3) First phone with Bluetooth 3 (anyways whats the big deal )
4) Internet browser is good but is without the text reflow feature which ultimately destroys the whole browsing experience.
5) Bada OS - The touchwiz UI is almost identical to other Samsung phones like Corby Pro. Some useful samsung apps available for download but nothing outstanding.
6) Performance - Phone has 1Ghz processor compared to my Nokia 5235 434 Mhz processor. Phone is a breeze to work with on most occasions.

NOW THE BAD PART -
As MENTIONED ABOVE that my left hand feels burned up is because the phone has a major OVERHEATING problem. The phone gets quite hot from the back side while doing regular browsing and some playing around continuously for 10-15 minutes. The heat gets even more bad if you start playing motion sensor games like Asphalt 5 / NFS shift. Also that the phone gets really hot while charging. The charging time is also very long - around 2.5 hours for a full battery charge. I can clearly say that if anyone uses a mobile phone for long periods like I do then " DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE ". Initially I thought that maybe I am the only one feeling the heat. To confirm this I handed over the phone to a couple of my friends and they too felt the same. The thing is that I do not think this is a one off problem with my phone. I have been looking around on google and found that a lot many number of people are facing similar overheating problems on the SAMSUNG WAVE & also the SAMSUNG GALAXY S. The back side of this phone has a "METAL BODY" battery cover which is even more so aggravating the heat. I am quite confident that this overheating problem is not just my phone's thing. The Wave possibly has a design flaw unless maybe my phone's battery is defective.

I personally believe the Wave has a default overheating problem.

I have taken the phone back to the dealer and service centre and am in the process of getting it replaced. The dealer has agreed for the replacement and also the fact that if I want I can buy the Samsung Galaxy S by paying the extra difference of around 10K. But again I have been reading a lot of people reporting about this overheating problem in GALAXY S as well. DONT want to get stuck with the big Elephant. Maybe this is a common problem with many Smartphones. Also that I have read elsewhere that the iphone has had these issue as well. As of now I have not been able to decide whether I should get a new Wave or take the Galaxy.

Can anyone else confirm if they are facing this issue of OVERHEATING on the back side of the phone in both WAVE & GALAXY S ?

Will update how I go about.

Well ,
My reply would be to one obsevation you made its "charges battery in 2.5 Hours " .Well Any battery if charged slowly will last long and its always better to charge any battery slowly . :)

Well I think the reason why the battery takes so long to charge is because of its size. The phone has a 1500 mAh battery. The battery hardly lasts for more that a day.
I personally would prefer quick charging for my mobile.

I have a Nokia E71 which too has a 1500mah battery, it charges in about 4-5 hours and lasts me 7 days with heavy call usage. With wifi or gps it comes down to 3 days or so

I have been using Wave for almost 2 months now. No overheating problems...I mean nothing exception compared to Iphone 3G which also I use...

Well in my case I do not really care about how long it takes to charge the phone-its just that the phone is heating up in my normal usage to the point that the inside part of my left hand feels burned on occasions.

hi........................,,,you are right the samsung galaxy s heats up some times.its a normal thing during charge.but when few background applications are constantly used it heats up...............its a normal phenomena.......nothing to really worry about.you can dump the wave and opt for galaxy any day a better android phone.the froyo update is just around corner.

all samsung phone take about 2 hrs for full charge.the downside of galaxy is that battery really sucks...............

Firstly thanx for your reply, as I said earlier It does not really matter if the phone is heating up while charging as such but what I am actually worried about is that if the GALAXY also overheats while doing normal tasks like browsing the net for an hour continuously or maybe playing games constantly for longer periods.
I have a habit of using the phone (browsing the net) for long hours while travelling in my car and thats when the Wave has been causing problems. In normal usage the phone does not heat up as such. It only heats up when used continuously for around 15 minutes.

Hope this is not the case with Galaxy.

Better return the phone and claim a refund. Now it is cool in monsoon, imagine summer with 40+ Celsius ... Components are bound to fail due to overheating soon after warranty period going by murphy's law... :)

Read an Review in GSM Arena About Iphone 4 vs Galaxy s.

Galaxy S has the back cover in plastic as its whole body also an plastic.

Now comes another deal breaker!

I had pretty much decided to buy the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S but this thread makes me think again. And since its "SAMSUNG" I have to worry about the after sale service even before I have bought the product! IRONIC!

Though I have been reading quite a LOT about Galaxy S these days and I havent read anywhere about the heating problem. It maybe the case with Wave (though I havent read about that either ) but about Galaxy S I havent read much. Now I would have to read more. Maybe some members who already have these phones can shed some light on it.

PS: I think some members wont like a non-hifi thread in the hifi section. So maybe better to movie it General lounge section?

well this review also put me in doubt ... I have decided to buy NOKIA E52 and Samsung WAVE ... now samsung one will have to wait.

I did a quick search on the net and YES overheating is indeed a problem with Galaxy S. But before we point our guns at the Galaxy S-

The search also showed similar problems with IPHONE 4 and even HTC Desire. Maybe a little less with HTC Desire than the Galaxy S. Search on Xperia X10 didnt reveal anything significant.

Maybe its an issue with all the smartphones. Whats worrying is though that the Samsung aftersales is not good when compared to other companies. Still it would be better if current users share their experiences.

Have been in touch with the Samsung people. As per Samsung they do not have a return policy in India. Although they do have a exchange policy. They have given me the option of taking a new Wave or any other phone like Galaxy in place of my Wave.

Can you advise / help how it would possible to return the phone and claim a refund. Can anyone advise if they have been able to claim a refund from Samsung for mobiles ?

Buddy I have been fortunate enough to have used the Galaxy at one of the shops in Delhi which had a live demo piece. Although not long enough to know whether the phone was heating up as such. But this was before I bought the wave and at that point of time I was not really aware these phones could be having such overheating problems.

I have experienced Nokia sales service which is pathetic. Any kind of problem they have only one answer that warranty is void due to liquid damage and they will try to show u some marks which no one can understand apart from Nokia service person. In my opion after sales services, samsung is much better than Nokia.

I am surprised and even happy that they are atleast willing to exchange the phone with another wave or Galaxy instead of being hell bent on proving that there is nothing wrong with the phone!

I would have to agree with you on that. We bought 1 nokia phone (6681) few years back when it was relatively new. After 1-2 months its battery gave up and the after sale service was pathetic! We then decided never to buy Nokia in future and now since I am on the hunt for new phone I havent even bothered to consider any phone of Nokia. Till now our vote was for Sony ericsson but then Xperia X10 is no match for Galaxy S.

I havent used Samsung mobile phones till now but my views are based on the experiences I have had with other samsung products.

Lil' bit late to the thread but anyway here is my thoughts. I think almost all the devices which have a high processing power bound to get heated up. Question is how much is too much. With my phone (SGS) what I've seen is that it does heat up sometimes but I think it's manageable. It normally happens with the GPS being on.
While playing games it's not muc, it's normal heating. And just for the sake of it I played Asphalt for more than half an hour just now. No problem at all.
While watching movies, again no overheating but just normal heating. Watched National Treasure Book of Secrets yesterday only. No problem at all.
Browsing and all I don;t even feel that there is any kind of heating. But again I don;t browse much with the phone. Mostly will check some imdb/facebook/twitts etc when I feel lazy to get the laptop started. Max half an hour usages so can't say much. But Wi-Fi is on all time I'm at home.
And the most important thing, while on call, well talked for than 40 mins few times and the heating was normal.
About the Battery, it sucked initially but now I've seen that the performance has really gone up and with really heavy usage it goes down to 50% around but doesn't totally drain out like it was in the initial days. It's much much better now. And I'm running live wallpapers on top of all other apps.
So I guess your wave has some problems and if you are ok with Android then exchange that phone with a Galaxy S. You'll not repent for sure.
