Well,

I have a HTPC with Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2 Mobo. The mobo has HDMi Port and I was earlier using this as my primary port for connecting to my monitor. The Audio and Video both were passed by the same port @ 1080p with 2.0 Large Speakers setup.

Now I have just bought a Onkyo Hts 3400. I am in a confusion on connecting the HTPC with the AVR from audio point of view. The HTPC shows only a 2.0 setup when I connect the HDMi port over to the AVR. I want this to be 5.1 so that I can pass a fully immersible movie experience. How to go about this.

Attaching the mobo link for the reference and queries. GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3 - GA-880GMA-UD2H (rev. 2.2)

The mobo does have optical out. I also have a Xonar DX sound card lying. If that helps in getting better audio then I can very well connect that too with the HTPC.

Thanks in Advance

few of the HDMI might be just delivering 2 channel raw .. else try to check system settings for the same. check in audio device property and see if its set to the required mode...

you can also connect via optical however you wont be able to get DD-MA and dts-HD

Hi Switch,

The HDMI must have audio return channel. you can connect PC to AVR via HDMI and ouput should be flawless to 5.1 and you also set the AVR output audio to 5.1 by going to the settings.

Any questions let me know.

Good Luck !!!!

Your MB has HDMI 1.3 & should send HD-audio via it.Still its not clearly mentioned in MB features.
You can add a decent graphiccard with HDMI out like ATI5570 OR nvidia new series which comes from 3-5k range.

That's what I am saying that I have checked in system properties and it shows that output is done in 2.0 mode and not 5.1.

Will adding a sound card like xonar dx and then passing audio through it's optical out will help.

Thanks guys. Will try that once I get back at home. Secondly, how to connect Tata sky HD+ to get proper 5.1 from the AVR.

BTW Guys... Do regular HD movies we get from the *ahem* sources have DD-MA and dts-HD. Most of my Movies are 4GB rips. Will they have the DD-MA and dts-HD audio. If not then does it make sense to connect the PC with Optical out as of now and get a ATI Series 5 Card later to pass compressed audio via HDMi to the AVR.

These 4GB rips won't have hd audio. So you can use the optical out now. Later you can upgrade to HDMI card when you start downloading BR ISOs or buying BR disks.:)

hi dude,
mobo hdmi will support either display or audio. you cannot pass both. i have a 880GM-UD2H and could not pass both video and audio simultaneously via hdmi from mobo. you will not get a display in monitor or a defective image.
i suggest you to get a GPU like the other said.
i have a xfx 5770 and it bitstreams surround like gem to my onkyo hts 3300. sound cards with optical out will not transmit HD audio.
the rips of 4gb size will not have HD audio so as for now you can connect your sound card for playing 4gb rips.

.

IMO some MBs may have that problem but not alL. My onboard graphic card had no problem transferring both audio and video to either my monitor or tv.

Dude even 4GB rips won't transmit HD audio through a DX to the AVR?? I have mostly 700mb rips and i'm thinking of getting a HTS 3500 wondering how wiill i get 5.1 surround lolz!
