Hi Guys,

I have a coaxial cable which i bought some 2-3 years to connect to Sony BD player to my Onkyo AVR which is getting connected correctly. Recently i bought a Airtel DTH, the stb (kaonmedia) is having a coaxial out. But my coaxial cable is not going inside the pin. So my question is that, is there different co axial cables are there in market in different pin sizes?

Co axial cable uses RCA plugs on both ends most of the times (3.5 mm mono pin some times at one end). It cannot be put into optical connections. Not only connectors are different, the techology itself is different. Optical (AKA Toslink) carries signal in form of light while co axial carries it as electric current. The cable is called co axial because of constrction: a the central wire rins, sorrounded by insulation which is in turn surrounded by flat wire (like a ribbon). standard coax cable has resistance of about 75ohm/m. To use optical connections, You will have to buy separate optical cable and your receiver should have optical in. The cables is easily available from Rs 400 onwards.

There are 2 types of cable for digital audio :

Coax Cable
Optical Cable

Airtel set top box would need an optical cable, easily available in the market.

guys i already know the difference between a coaxial cable and optical cable....My question is simple...The coaxial cable i am having is not fitting into the coaxial output of the Kaonmedia STB. The coaxial cable is correctly fitting into the coaxial out put of the Sony BDP 370. So my question is this...are there difference specification co axial cables are available in market...

I dont know if any one is having Kaonmedia STB here..But Kaonmedia does have only co axial output..

Kaonmedia STB does have only coaxial out put..and Huwaii STB has optical output... I have the experience of using both the STBs.....

question is simple, whether all the available coaxial cables in the market will fit into the coaxial out of the devices...unfortunately the coaxial cable of mine is going into coaxial pin of kaonmedia STB.

Boss, you have clearly said in first post that your STB has Optical out and everyone has opined accordingly. Now you are saying it has co-axial out. If you are confused, post a picture. We will be able to help you in better way.

^^. You didn't explain your query clearly. What I could gather is that you tried to plug in coaxial cable to optical port.

Dude i already have a coaxial cable as well as optical cable..
As far as I know, the coaxial digital in/out is a female RCA plug and is uniform across all equipment. The cable has male RCA plugs at both ends.

Can you post the picture of the panel of the STB?

no..I tried to plug in a co axial cable (which i am using to connect from Sony BDP 370 last 3 years and working fine) to a co axial port of my stb. But it is not going insidde. What could be the problem?

Boss it was a mistake..I corrected the post...And i know which is optical and which is coaxial. My problem is this..the coaxial cable i am having is not going inside the coaxial out pin of the Kaonmedia STB....i hope i am clear now?

Please post a pic of your STB connections and the cable you are trying to connect.

There are digital co axial cables which have 3.5 mm pin on one end and RCA on the other. The difference between the standard stereo headphone pin and this pin is that the headphone pin has 2 black plastic rings near the tip (as it carries analogue signal in 2 channels) while this pin of digital co-ax audio carries all signal in single channel, so there is only 1 black plastic ring near the tip of the pin. For a headphone pin, the other end will have 2 RCA plugs while this will have only one RCA plug at the other end.

This kind of co-axial cable is needed when the headphone out of some PCs/Laptops doubles up as that for sending digital co-axial signals.

Have a look at the links

However, unless the OP posts a snap of his STB connection, it is difficult to tell correctly.

Yes, coaxial cable is a standard cable. Any coaxial cable will fit in any coaxial input/output of any device.

I have one pair of (fairly fancy) interconnect in which the grip of the outer conductor of the RCA connectors is so tight, it needs very careful insertion and extraction. The outer conductor of the RCA works by spring action so some may be too tight.

Better use another pair of cables for your set top box.

Oh well thanks for the link... It appears to be among the rarest of connections.. certainly not common for an STB (in India)...

I just googled for the pic and this is what I got... Kaon media STB

With Bharti Airtel stamp:

Same model for TS:

So I am very sure it is an RCA connection. May be like jls001 had commented, it could be a tight connection. I had my Beresford coaxial cable.. which was very difficult to connect due to tight fit.
