I have Panasonic DMP-BDT220 and I have only good things to say about it. I can't comment on Pioneer. Maybe it is just as good. But my Panasonic is now region free that alone makes it 5 steps ahead.

Hi Nikhil,

I just ordered Panasonic DMP BDT220 based on recommendations of Just4kix, Saketb and so many other FMs who are using this blu ray player.

I understand Pioneer BDP 450 is a good choice, but it does not come with Analogue output, incase you want to use it in future for listening to music.
You can also consider Pioneer BDP 150 and LX55.

Regards.

may members imported pana 220...go for it.

Can you please share the steps to make this region free? Hopefully an amateur like me can also do it, all by myself..

Any idea what the best price for this one? I am based in Mumbai. Is warranty a issue if I Get it from outside?

The steps to make the player region free are elaborate and cannot be discussed here. Send me your email id via PM. You cannot make the player region free by yourself. It requires a special firmware.

Best price in India is Rs. 12,000. Works out much cheaper, if imported. Warranty is just for a year and nothing happens to the player if used properly, for ages! No big deal in importing. Now Amazon.co.uk is shipping this player to India. It is costlier than Amazon.com but in the bargain, you get a 220V/50Hz player and no need of step-down transformer.

Considering that new range of Pana BDP players are being released, the prices of the 220 shall come down. One of the new released one is "Panasonic DMP-BD79EB-K Smart Network 3D Blu-ray Player",w hich has similar capability of 220 but priced lower. You may please wait for few week before the prices of the new range and old range comes down to reasonable level.

People,

Saw this on the internet today:
RattleByte Technologies

Is that an alternate possible

this is not plug and play. requires soldering skills and will 1005 void any warranty.

Pioneer 450 can be made region free. do some googling. (at no cost if you are "smart")

dvd region 1-8
bdp region abc

I have both players mentioned by OP. both have been made region free.

Pioneer, biggest plus is 2 hdmi outputs, which I needed for my 3d projector and non 3d av unit.

PQ- Processing on Pioneer is better IMHO. (even my older Pioneer 320 is better than panasonic; esp when playing on a lower quality TV).

pana firmware has less lag and boots up faster.

My pana is in the box right now and pioneer is in the rack.

best wishes
