Hi guys !

I got an offer for a pair of NS F150 for 16.5k + shipping.
Its got very few reviews but they rate it highly purely because of the price.

Plus + points
1. Very loud
2. Good treble

Minus - points
1. Bass not properly controlled
2. Mids are not flat (recessed)
3. Internal construction is of poor quality.

Please help me decide !
BTW, my amp is DIY 100w/channel (from bibin3210.)

NS-F150 - Home Speaker Systems - Yamaha - Asia / Middle East / Africa / Oceania / Latin America
Yamaha - NS-F150 - Tower Speaker - Techno Guru - Online Store

CORRECTION:
The model I was offered is different :P
My bad :(
Its actually Yamaha NS 50F which is a bookshelf (a really large one in that) with similar driver arrangement as that of F150. The deferences are the dimensions are smaller but it have much higher power handling capacity with more sensitivity.

I have the lower version of this NS F140. It pairs nicely with both Yamaha AVR and Denon amplifier. Check my signature. I brought mine for 11k from Reliance Digital, Bangalore. The music sounds nice/clear/not so great bass and I use this speakers primarily for music purpose only. I think the price is good, try to do an audition before you make the plunge.

Thanks

Thanks bro but I got confused :P Its actually NS 50F which houses similar driver arrangement.

BTW, I wonder which is the better one among the budget floorstanders from Yamaha.
NS F150 - 2 Way - 1" tweeter and two 6.5" woofers - 3khz crossover (not sure)
NS 50 F - Same as above (afaik) with smaller box dimensions.
NS 8390 - 3 Way -2.2cm tweeter, 10cm woofer and 20cm woofer - 4khz + 10khz crossover

I think the NS F series are new version of the speakers and the NS8390 is the old version. Better do an audition and decide.

Thanks

Not sure about NS 50F but Yamaha NS8390 is not a great choice. I know someone who didn't find it worth to be even surrounds! Sorry no offence meant to anyone here.. there are a few happy owners as well.

If you are looking to setup a music system, you better audition some bookshelves before deciding. Not that the Yamaha is bad but its sensible to compare it with other options in that price range before pulling the trigger.

Yeah, auditioning is the best idea but i don't have time !

But, there is a big shopping mall (Lulu mall, Edapalli) with many audiophile brands approx 2hrs from ma home. May be I would check it out this Sunday.

Normally I think Reliance Digital also stocks this Yamaha series of speakers. So try to look for Reliance Digital nearby and do an audition.

BTW what about Jamo ?

I got an offer for Jamo S426 and S416 for less than 16.5k !
Are they good ?

Any info ?

Yamaha has their own showroom on the Highway near Kalamassery. Why don't you try there ? If you are interested in a vintage Yamaha NS-A 638 made in USA, please PM me. Regards

I got a call from the dealers of Yamaha speakers, Achme Communication (Coimbatore) for a audition of their range. He also promised me to demo Jamo too.
But he can't arrange the demo for Klipsch, KEF which he has in stock.

Got to plan for a Coimbatore trip next week !!

i had auditioned 8390 with yamaha 373 but for music only with some low bit rate MP3s and a normal CD. The songs included bhajans(CD), hard rock of Deep Purple(mp3),some Hindi songs, english POP etc. I was not impressed. Sure they play loud, there is enough bass to fill 17by 10 room (DEMO room) but clarity, sound stage depth was missing. The response was flat.

But there may be two reasons why 8390 could not perform better

I had used AVR for music though in stereo mode and
the source material was not of high quality.

But still, as also discussed with the distributor ,the speaker is built to cost and not much refinement can be expected. But he said that no body offers this quality at the price(Quoted 17K but 10% off). NS F 150 which he quoted for around 22000 before discount was stated to have better clarity and better high end response though the bass was considerably lesser than 8390. But i didinot audition it.

Guys, do you have any suggestion regarding the speaker selection ?

These are my preferences BTW !
1. Very sensitive (>89 db?)...I might go for an SPL war with my neighbor :p :D
2. Fast paced....should be ok for using for games, music as well as movies.
3. Good mids as well as highs. I would be buying/building a 12" Peerless woofer based sub with a 300W amp soon. So, how "low" the FS can go does not matter that much.
4. Good soundstage.
5. Sturdy build, looks does not matter.

budget: max 20k (can increase a little bit more)
amp: diy power amp with 100W/channel (can supply upto 150W/channel according to bibin3210)

Please help :please:

I don't know much about about audio tech and stuff but I think they (Yamaha) set its (NS 8390) crossover wrongly. (4khz and 11khz !!!!)

BTW, their NS 555 AND NS 777 got very good reviews but their are bit more costly than the NS F150.

By & large you would not get long term happiness with the models discussed.
Up your budget & get a better set of speakers, that way you will avoid getting bitten by upgraditis bug earlier than you will with the Yammies.

My 100 Rs

:D

I don't see any Rs 100 notes in your post
:D

What about the Yamaha NS 555 ?
I got a quote of 22k for that one.

Man, I hate this "audiophile" stuff. :p I feel like buying a used set creative pc speakers and call it a day. :D
This is getting too costly and I have to buy the BenQ GW2450HM for my system . So I might buy it along with a cheap 2.1 system and try to forget the fact the all this happened. And yeah, delete my HiFiVision account too :D

My 100 Rs. stay exactly where they need to, in my pocket!!! :ohyeah:

I completely agree with you, cut the poisonous tree @ its roots & be done with!

Some times the simple things in life work well & yet we try to make things complicated.

If you are happy with the NS555 demo, then buy them. End of story, hopefully for you :p

DO carry your media along for the demo though! Absolute must :)

I agree with you mate !!

When I joined the forum a month ago, my budget for speakers was about ~25-30k (for a 5.1 system). And today, my budget is 45k for 5.0 and another 15k for subwoofer. The reason for the expansion of the budget is the advice of audiophile forum members :ohyeah: and their reasons/explanations to go for better equipment :yahoo:. If I wait for one more month, my budget might increase by 10 more thousands .

This is a serious hobby that will never guarantee satisfaction. You will be craving for more. I joined this forum while looking for a 5.1 decoder for my laptop to connect with cheap 5.1 speaker system that I had. After an year or so I bought a BDP, AVR, Media Player, two HTPCs, 5.1 speaker system, a servo stab, LI UPS, 3D TV, couple of hard disks, remote controls, blu-ray disks, stereo amp, book shelf speakers and now online UPS. Sold a few items which always resulted in loss. The total damage is over 2 Lakhs a good portion of which is loan.:D. I am still looking for other fields of improvement like a projector, a better subwoofer and a 2.1 speaker system for laptop and probably a DAC.:licklips:
