Hi FMs,

I am in dilemma.. i have ordered Muse DAC and it has input of USB,Optical and coaxial and RCA out.

What i want is, i should connect my mobile to DAC and DAC to amplifier.
now question is.. how can i connect my mobile to DAC as my mobile uses 3.5 mm jack.

My question is ..can i use my mobile to connect to DAC by using 3.5 mm jack which i use with my mobile to my multimedia speakers ?

In this context, audio signals are of two types.

(1) Analogue
(2) Digital

Most mobile phones output type 1, analogue.

All DACs expect input type 2, digital.

To be able to connect a mobile with a DAC both need to have type 2 connection, digital.

Some DACs can also act as a preamp, so provide analogue input. But if you connect using analogue input, you will be using the DAC as a preamp, not as a converter.

To be able to use your DAC with the headphone as intended, you will need to get digital output out of your mobile phone. It may or may not be possible. Check the phone manual. If it does support digital output, you can post about it here and we can recommend what cable will you need.

which mobile you have?
does it spport OTG? Do you have OTG cable to test

Some androd mobiles CAN be connected with OTG , need to check case to case basis.

I have Samsung Galaxy R, i usually connect my multimedia 2.1 speakers by using 3.5 mm mono jack.

It is 3.5 mm STEREO jack right?
You cannot connect DAC through 3.5 mm - it does not give digital signal

For phones like yuo you require OTG (On The GO ) cable . it has micro USB at one end and USB female at another - where no of devices like USB pen drives , keyborads can be connected. It costs around Rs 50 -100

No harm in trying with your phone and DAC

Please DON'T DO THIS without consulting your phone manual.

If you connect your DAC through an OTG cable, and if your DAC is USB powered, it might burn down your USB port of the phone (I mean the relevant circuits inside). Mobile phones don't offer a lot of current on their USB. If your DAC draws a lot of power from USB depending on a lot of factors, the DAC may either not work, or cause a circuit failure inside phone.

Which phone do you have? Have you checked whether or not it does "digital out" through OTG?

Even if you succeed in connecting your DAC to your phone through OTG, and no electrical damage occurs, you may still not hear any sound unless your phone does a digital out. So please check the phone manual. If all is well, then give it a try. All the best!

I checked this link :

Android phones and USB DACs - Page 192

Here it is saying OTG will work and anything passed through OTG will be Digital.

Well perfect! I didn't notice you have an Android phone.

Well then I suppose you can just go ahead and plug it in. Your DAC doesn't draw power from USB, right? If it does you would better make sure it isn't too much for the phone.

Also, please note (speaking from personal experience), digital out through OTG isn't as black n white as it is made out to be. I'd be very happy to learn that it's working for you. But I have tried it with two Android devices and two DACs it didn't work with any. So, there is more to it than just the OTG cable. But you won't know until you try. So go ahead and give it a try.

For best results while using an Android Phone with an OTG Cable, you also need to be using a player that is capable of putting out bit-perfect audio. Not all players do this.

That link has quite a bit of helpful information. I found it in a thread on HFV, about Audio from Android (This thread is also a nice read on the topic).
