Hi All,

Was planning on playing "good" stuff on my recently bought home theater .. and this confusion came to my mind .. so thought to put here and see if this is worth or not ..

Bluray player : Can play Bluray disks .. as well connect to the network and external HDD .. and gives you nice Picture and Audio quality .. price range from 5K to Over 50K ..

Media Player ( streamer ) : Can't play the Disks .. but can play almost all the formats from External HDD .. gives you A/V quality based on the content .. price range from 5K to 12K or so ..

Now comes the contender which is a bit odd ..

Tablet : Can play every format on external HDD .. bluray player/writer ( external ) can be connected to even read/write bluray disks .. A/V quality based on the content .. price range about 10K - 20K .. apart from playing the roles of BD player and Media Player .. its tablet as well ..

So guys .. isn't its worth to put money in a tablet instead of the above mentioned devices .. or is it I am missing something basic .. and terribly wrong in this comparison ..

Eagerly waiting to hear from you folks on the same ..

Thanks

Hi Alok,

I don't get this. You mentioned the need to add a Tablet stating "bluray player/writer ( external ) can be connected to even read/write bluray disks".
So basically, you'll need a BD Player after all!?

Adding a tablet, IMHO, is unnecessary in the long run. A BDP has a USB input through which you can use External HD or a USB, plus you can use any CD/ DVD/ BD.

I haven't used an external Media player so can't comment on that but when it comes to BDP and a tablet, a BDP wins hands down.

For Tablet Vs Media Player, perhaps others can assist.

Thanks for your response ValarMorghulis ..

Inputs taken ..

Just wanted to clarify .. when I said "bluray player/writer ( external ) can be connected to even read/write bluray disks" .. I meant through USB connection to tablet .. as the external bluray read/writer comes with almost same price as only BD player .. I thought to mention the same ..

The main question that I had was .. will there be any A/V degradation .. if tablet playing stuff and connected to AVR through HDMI Vs BDP connected to AVR through HDMI ..

Once again .. Thanks for your inputs here ..

Thanks

Yes .. tablet which I am looking out can get 1TB HDD connected .. and able to run over 15GB BD rips file ..

And yes .. its having the HDMI port .. I have seen having media player classic installed in it .. and run these files and transfer to AVR through it .. even the codecs you mentioned ..

This is the tablet one of my colleague bought on which I have seen the things mentioned above ..

Instead of getting a tablet, then attaching an external 1TB hard drive, and then attaching an external blu ray drive - why don't you just build a PC that can do all this?? You will get it for the same price or less.

If size or form factor is a concern, there are plenty of options available nowadays that are about as big as the media players you mentioned.

And from personal experience, I can tell you that an x86 based PC is far superior in the long run to any media player or Android based ARM tablet. Specifically, in terms of software and driver and upgradability support.

^^ This! Also, if you need to spin a BR Disc, a media player or a Tablet won't cut it. A PC with a BR drive, and the necessary software installed, will be able to do it all.
