Guys - Recently I bought a mini projector for my home. It has a inbuilt speaker which is of no use obviously.

It also has one 3.5 mm (Audio jack) for sound output. How to achieve 5.1 surround by connecting to Onkyo 3400 receiver.

Does 3.5 mm to dual RCA cable get great sound? Any other efficient way to connect the projector?

Thanks!

What's the source? Does it have a hdmi or 5.1 out? 3.5mm stereo headphone jack will not give you 5.1

I have connected my Laptop to projector using HDMI
Connect the laptop hdmi to your onkyo and the hdmi out from onkyo to your projector. Onkyo will then take care of your audio and projector your display

Laptop to avr. Avr to projector /TV as required. If both in same room that is

Thanks guys, let me try these combinations..Since I have connected HDMI Out of AVR to TV, I need to remove it everytime when I connect to Projector

Let me think of feasible options

Otherwise you will need dual HDMI out AVR which are pricey.
By the way, if the source material on your laptop is two channel then 3.5 mm jack to AVR may be reasonable

Hope yr laptop has hdmi out,if yes then you can connect hdmi cable from laptop to avr, from avr hdmi out to projector for video.

Here what happens is the avr will decode the 5.1ch audio to yr speakers, kindly note that the music or movie you are playing are recorded in 5.1ch (dolby digital or dts) and your laptop/media player is set to 5.1ch in audio settings.

Thats it you will get the audio in LCR and in surround spekers.

Rajesh..

Yes either remove and put back each time or get a hdmi splitter. That's what I use. One input from receiver and its got two out puts. One goes to TV and other to the projector.

Yeah, I was wondering about the splitter. Any good brand/quality splitters that you have in mind? I don't want to comprise on the quality.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
