Great Idea. If you can put in your experience and guidance, we can make it a Sticky in the forum for others to refer.

You will be importing fostex drivers with original bill then there will not be any issues at all only you have to pay customs duty. The item should have a proper invoice. The customs duty will be 35% of total amount ( invoice + shipping.).Your shipping address will be your main address which have address proof nothing else.

As address proof I have driving license will that work?

Is there a limit on the value that one can import for personal use without an IEC number? I was told off hand by a courier company that the limit would be 1 lac

No..need more data..

Aadhar card at minimum
Yes, Adhaar or passport, as the courier company insisted. The name on the invoice should be spelt exactly as in the KYC document. I had to go through hoops because of 'different' spellings - Ananda Rao vs Anand Rao.

Things should be easy with audio equipment because they must be seeing these items regularly. When I imported my kayak the description included a rudder, and the customs guys insisted that I need a 'radio' licence. I guess it was more due to avarice than stupidity...

If you ship via ups ,dhl etc you must need a valid address proof for KYC. You must need PAN card & Adhaar they might ask both. As mentioned above
invoice address should be same as shipping dont put your office address as shipping address here that will make some complications.Forget about GST and all everything will be in the customs duty bill. The courier company might charge some handling charges so that will be additional.

Of course.

There are two ways one could import an item via Courier.

1. Personal as Gift
2. Commercial for resale.

Personal as Gift
When an invoice is marked as Gift/Personal Use Only, it's considered a Gift and attracts a flat 42.5% Customs and Duty including GST, etc.. This sort of import comes under the Courier Mode and is stored in the Courier complex of the Import locations airport. Usually, any courier like FedEx, DHL or India post will do the clearing on your behalf and they will assign a clearance agent from their side who will take care of everything. With my experience, DHL and Aramex are the best and FedEx, USPS the worst, although only with regard to Hyderabad and Bangalore airports.

This is usually the slowest way and there will be warehousing charges, based on the weight of the item and how long its been sitting in the courier warehouse. Apart from this, there will be some brokerage charges and customs advance charges (about 1%). Expect a few days to a week for clearance.

Documents you'll need is either AADHAAR or PAN card. No way around it.

Process ->

When the item reaches the airport for clearance, the Bill of Entry is filed (BE) is filed.

Document verification>>>>>>>Upload in ECCS in Tiff format>>>>>>customs Assessment>>>>> Marked for open exam >>>>> Assessment >>>Duty Payment>>>>>Retrieval >>>>>> X-Ray screening>>>>>Out of Charge >>>>>Gate Pass.

It can be tracked at https://eicimobility.eccs.gov.in/eicimobility/import

Commercial
When an invoice is marked as merchandise, it's considered a commercial import and you need a whole bunch of stuff for clearance. In this mode, the duty will depend on rate set by CBIC. For speakers, it's around 28%.

Documents you'll need for this are IEC code from DGFT, AD code from Bank.

Now, the couriers will usually not clear merchandise as it's usually a lot of work and they prefer not to do it, although they can. DHL, for the most part, does it, FedEx a big No. In such cases, you hire a CHA (Customs House Agent) to do the clearance on your behalf. They take about 3 to 5k plus GST and are usually very good as they have high-level contacts at the airport and can get your shipment cleared in no time.

Under this mode, clearance occurs in Cargo Mode and items are stored in the Cargo Warehouse (Air Cargo Complex). Rules are very strict and the Bill of Entry has to be filed within 24 hours of the plane landing or else its 5000 fine per day. This also has warehousing charges.

The process is more or less the same but everything is automated. If everything is in order, there will be no officers interference and the system will clear your shipment in a day. Again, only speaking of Hyderabad and Bangalore airports.

It can be tracked at https://enquiry.icegate.gov.in/enquiryatices/beTrackIces

More on the process for commercial imports in the attached file.

Coming to the import of Used items. Yes, it's possible through Personal mode as a Gift. Not possible through Commercial route. But be ready to wait more than a week and you need to produce original purchase invoice, bank remittance copy which will then be verified by the DC of customs and then cleared.

If there's any more queries please let me know.

The quoted limit is correct.

I'm not aware of any such limits.

My company(a startup) orders Equipment like Laptops, Wearable like Oculus rift, Realwear, etc from Amazon.com without an IEC, usually, the CEO orders it on his own name. The value of these is generally more than 1 Lakh and are shipped by DHL. Never had any issues so far.

Thanks very much generalxxxstark.
When bringing products as personal and gifts. I suppose it referes to brand new product. What about used product and process to declare as gift. I have few relatives and suppose want to bring used turntable with all the taxes paid (I am not rich but would like to follow the law of the land :)). But used electronic items are banned in India. Or is that like any individual who brings along a used electronic product within limites is allowed with due taxes paid and procedure followed? Little confusion as dont want to have friends and relatives in trouble at customs.
Regards.

Note that I didn't say there'd be any issues, merely that you'd need an IEC for the same. In my case (assessable value > 1L and ordered in my name), the CHA applied for a "dummy" IEC in order for my speakers to be able to clear Customs.

When a person is traveling and brings the item there won't be many restrictions on whether the product is used or not. 50k is the duty-free limit and anything exceeding that will be taxed at 41.25%. You have to be able to prove the value of the item through invoices etc. But of course, you can just walk through the green channel as well if you're able to prove the value is indeed under 50k for all items combined.

I see. Actually Dummy IEC is a rip-off that these CHA use to charge us 3k to 7k. But, in reality, it takes 1 day for an individual to generate his IEC and it costs 500 INR. All you need is a PAN, Bank account (savings acc also works) and a canceled cheque.

Now DGFT offers IEC to individuals too and GSTIN is not needed as well. They also have a very active and helpful Helpline one could call to clear all of the IEC related queries. For individuals, the PAN becomes the IEC Code.
