new 4k uhd player for sony oled tv

What's with the talk of voltage conversion here?
UB820 user here purchased from US. No step down converter needed.
Though I haven't played any Indian disc yet, I don't think it's region locked either.

It was a discussion for the players bought from US, as I had imported a Panasonic 2k Blu-ray player from the US, which had 120volts so needed a step down.

So assumed that even this 820 4k player would need but as you say it's not needed, that clears it.

For region coding... 4k Blu-rays are region free only 2k are region coded, locked with region B.

Can someone write a review on the picture quality & compatibility with MKV Files played via USB (does it have this option)?

I can confirm that the player has limited compatibility with payback of MKV and other codecs. I wanted to check the picture quality from the player's processor, so tried high profile dolby vision/hdr content as well as m2ts files ripped from physical blu-ray discs and it failed in all. Though it plays low profile hdr, sdr content but again some work and some not. I was expecting that this player would play the latest codecs but in vain, this is really disappointing. Even my LG oled failed in playing these content.

Though the player does a superb job for what's it meant to do... playing 4k/2k blu-ray discs and I just love it. I can say its one of my best purchases this year.

A dedicated media player like zidoo, dune etc is a must have if you're planning to play local content in drives. I myself am planning to buy the Zidoo Z3000 Pro 8k media player which is a charm and plays all the available formats out there and above all even blu-ray folders just like a physical disc.

get the Ugoos if you want proper DV playback,

May I know on what basis the DV playback is better in Ugoos compared to Zidoo?

What I could read from the specs on the Ugoos SK1 and the Zidoo z3000 Pro, both the players have the same processer but the implementation is very different. The Zidoo has these features which the Ugoos lacks and I would like to have all these in my media player.

The only thing which the Ugoos has the benefit is the internal storage which is double in capacity - higher by 64GB.

1. Dual HDMI separate audio and video output, supports Dolby Atmos and DTS X "audio pass-through in HDMI", as well as multi-channel PCM & DSD
2. One built-in 3.5''HDD bay with SATA 3.0 specification - one can insert HDD with 16TB capacity
3. Dolby Vision with 12Bit color depth
4. Spotify/Tidal/others Connect & Streaming Music from various other platforms as well as Lossless streaming (a very important feature)
5. Posterwall like interface for seamless downloading of metadata from the the internet for content.
6. Connects a CD drive to one of its USB for use as a dedicated CD Player and download its metadata to show on screen.
7. The look and feel of the player itself.
8. Playback of Blu-ray folders - (Very important for me as I've tons of movies ripped from discs)
9. Integration of movies & music with endless information displayed right on your screen/tv (similar to Kodi)
10. DSD (single and multi-channel output) (SACD ISO, DSF, DFF) - (which again I have many of them)
11. Supports automatic download of subtitles
12. Automatic frame rate and resolution switching output for smooth movie playback without interruption (supports local playback and online streaming).
13. Supports HDMI CEC control, RS232 control, Control 4, seamless integration into smart home. (HDMI CEC is important)
14. Zidoo Controller APP for iOS and Android mobile phones
15. Quite a few others which I shall read the owners manual and get back.

Oh that is a bummer.
I was expecting the Panasonic to media playback well. Hmm...

Physical Disk player and then a media player, list gets bigger.

Thanks for the reply.

May I know on what basis the DV playback is better in Ugoos compared to Zidoo?
ah, my bad, I was a bit lazy with my response, so I'll explain it in full.

before I begin, do note all my considerations are from a proper DV playback perspective and that the player should be able to play Blu-Ray Discs or any media without weird issues like PGS subs causing issues, lossless audio not working etc, I don't care about any QoL or perf improvements that other players bring.

And. are you aware of the bullshit that comes with DV? different profiles and enhancement layers and stuff like needing two hardware decoders for a full DV experience? if not I'll first summarize how DV works and the issues with it

DV mainly comes in 3 profiles, P5, P7, P8. P7 & P8 have a HDR10 fallback for non DV displays. Most WEB-DLs come with P5 DV, thats why you get that weirdo purple thingy if you play a WEB-DL mkv on an unsupported display.

And DV mainly consists of three parts: BL (Base Layer), RPU (Reference Picture Unit) and EL (Enhancement Layer). BL+RPU is the first layer of DoVi, EL is the second layer. The EL (enhancement layer) can be Minimal (MEL) or Full (FEL): MEL is a very convoluted way to say that the EL (the second layer) is empty.

And basically
Profile 7 BL+MEL+RPU = Profile 8 BL+RPU
and quoting a thread
Only profile 7 and 8 have an HDR10 fallback BL. Profile 5 doesn't have an HDR10 BL, so this is the reason why P5 files will display purple and green on non DV screens (they can't fallback to HDR10). Since the BL is static, and Dolby Vision is dynamic, the dynamic part is given by the combination between the RPU (holding the dynamic data) and the BL.

All the other boxes (Dune HD and the likes, including the Shield), can't reproduce the FEL track correctly. They discard the extra information and just play BL+RPU, ignoring the EL. This makes the TV effectively display the Dolby Vision logo, fooling you into thinking you are indeed getting full DV.
You'll need a player featuring double HEVC hardware encoder to correctly play any profile without loss of quality.
basically Tl: Dr for proper UHD BD DV playback, you need a box with dual hardware encoder which can decode both the BL and EL properly which most of the boxes currently dont have,

Now coming back to Ugoos vs Zidoo, I am not suggesting the latest UGoos but rather UGoos AM6B /AM6B Plus where CoreElec have released a update which makes the UGoos have full compatibility with P7 DV without additional bullshit that comes with additional players, like PGS subs not playing nice, not being able to play lossless audio and it supports Atmos passthrough for those with proper speaker setups.

if you are on Private Trackers, or are into collecting remuxes, I can give you MediaInfo comparisons and if you are in the top ones, I can send you the relevant threads where peeps are discussing this.

this is a good sheet, that keeps track of different players (Shield, Ugoos, Zidoo etc) and their compatibility/issues with DV playback.

And this is the relevant CoreElec forum
