i currently have the lg plasma 720p 50pq60 which i am very happy with (touchwood) except for the shadow details & now have the possibility of changing.

a relative is planning to buy a tv & is considering the samsung 43e400 which he is getting for 26.5k after exchange since he doesnt mind that its not even 720p. so i am debating giving him my tv & getting another for myself.

always having heard good things abt panasonic plasmas but i then came across the very good reviews for the samsung 51 e8000 which with the current price & offer is effectively 70k (after selling/trading in the tablet). the reviews comparing them to the panny's make it very tempting but then i'm wondering if it worth spending an additional 40k more than what the 43e400 would cost for (compared to my lg) -

1. just a (slightly?) better PQ

2. the upgrade from the lg's 720p to sammy's 1080p

(which will only come into play for the 15-20% of hd rips that i'll watch. the remaining is tata sky hd -20, tata sky sd - 30, gaming - 30)

3. 3d/smart apps etc which i dont care about.

ideally i would have loved a 55"+ tv to justify the cost but the 55" led's with good PQ's are 1.8l+ & there arent any plasmas (except for the 64 inchers which are 2l+).

there are some 60" lg plasmas (pz550) listed on online sites for 1.10l but then there arent many reviews from trusted sources & i dont think its a good idea to spend so much more if the PQ isnt going to be anything less than great (though the 60" size would compensate a bit for that )

question for people who've had more than a single plasma - when you'll have changed to a tv with better blacks (like the sammy would hopefully have compared to my lg) has the jump in PQ been that dramatic. would you'll prefer say a 50" plasma with better PQ or a 60" with (debatably) lower PQ?

should i take the jump to the 51e8000 or save my money for a OLED 2 years or so down the line?

I have had 42PQ60 and moved to Samsung 42B450 (former predecessor of the E series).
The difference will be night and day wrt black level/colour reproduction/SD upscaling in that order.
Shadow details will be same as the LG.

50pq60 vs E8000 ? i guess we should not get into that comparison.:D

As far as OLED's are concerned, for them sell at the price level of what plasma's are selling these days i would say it will take 5 -7 years minimum.

Yeah, don't worry about OLED or 4k UHD tvs. They will take a long time to come and in our country even HD is at a premium. 51e8000 is a great tv, go for it without a doubt as even if oled do launch next year for under 1lac would be impossible to get at same size.

yeah i know the oled's will take a long time to reach these prices. what i meant was that whether i should keep my money in my pocket instead of spending that much more for shifting to a tv of the same size.

@blasto, for how long did u have the lg before shifting to the sammy & if i may ask your reasons for changing? also was the difference very apparent even without a head to head comparison ?
