1 tonne split airconditioner - need suggestions

Also remember - that AC is not just to do with cooling, but also with the often neglected outdoor unit. The quality of materials used to construct the plumbing varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. I have seen O-General, Hitachi, and the old 'National' brand AC's last for over 10-15 years without a single problem - many times not even a topping of gas! That is when true 'value' becomes evident!

I am yet to see a Samsung/LG do that. They are the lowest in the quality chain for me.

Samsung and LG products are for budget conscious people....for quality look for other brands.....the same goes true for A/V product also..........

Thats some good info on ACs. :clapping:

I am also in the same dilema. Looking for an AC for bedroom.

Bedroom size - 20x12
Facing - South East
1st Floor. Nothing above.
Location - Bhopal

My usage will be strictly for night time. Considering the usage only for night time will a 1.5T split work fine or should i go for a 2T model ??

Thanks

Comfortable daytime operations in hot-humid conditions would necessitate use of 1 TR models. Latent energy loads far exceed sensible load in humid conditions. Nights could easily have been managed by 0.75 TR.

For your budget, I think LG fits in, with of course a very good after sales service record.

Settle for a 3 bend evaporator design model ..... it allows for maximum de-humidification, hence better cooling characteristics. Make sure that the distance of the condenser (outside unit) is as near to the evaporator (inside unit), with minimum bends on the gas carrying lines during installation. That ensures easy flow of the gas to the evaporator unit and out ..... minimum resistance would also ensure better compressor funtionality. Also necessary to make sure that both units are installed at around the same height +/- 1 ft.

The condensor unit too requires service once a while, so it needs to be placed at a location which is easily accessible. MOST IMPORTANT .... which no one suggests, put the outside unit in a shaded, but well ventilated place. Try to save it from direct rain water and direct sunlight. Why sunlight, bcoz, you are trying to throw out the accumulated room heat to the seemingly cooler outside. The higher the DETLA T (temperature difference) the better would be the compressor efficiency..... and lower power bills.

Tell your folks at home to set the temperature at 24 deg C during night and 22 deg C during daytime for best results. No need to set temps at 18 or 19. That DOES NOT mean faster cooling .........

I would be sending you a bill for this HVAC consultancy .... so, let me have your address ....:p

Hai,

To add,

Every 1deg C lower setting adds 3% power consumption in energy.

Visit that distributor ..... make him open the condenser section and search for the actual manufacturer tag plate which would tell you the serial no. and the address/name etc etc.

The evaporator sections are all imported ....... all from China, no matter who you buy them from. But, some AC big local guys have started making their own condensers. If the Voltas condenser unit is of Chinese make, then you can settle for them too.

I have been to the Midea plant in China ....the world's 2nd largest split AC manufacturer (5 years ago). At that time they were manufacturing 1.7 crore units/annum. I could locate separate lines of AC units being manufactured for at least 3 Indian and 8 other major AC world brands. Voltas was one of them, at that time. My Electrolux was also manufactured there, which I found out later when the AC was opened for servicing.

BTW, I am NOT an AC guy, but do something which is close enough to HVAC for a living .........

Hi,

I am currently haier in both bedrooms, working for the past 3 years without any issues. We have had National, Carrier, and O'General.

Carrier and O'General are good, but costlier and have heard O'general has a not-so-good customer service.

Pls refrain from any V's, not definitely for faint-hearted.

Cheers!

Bangalore has become super hot and I need some advice on A/C too. I have two window air conditioners and thinking of replace them with Split air conditiners because:

a) 10 year old 1.5T Carrier A/C in dad's bedroom is working but ineffective
b) 2 year old LG 2T in my bedroom is very good but noisy and am afraid it might be disturbing the neighbours
c) I have a Hitachi 1.2T Split in my HT and am impressed with its cooling, power savings and noiseless performance because of outdoor unit. Hence the thought of moving away from Window models.

So questions I need answers for are:
a) Should I try servicing both before I take next step. Gas refill for the Carrier maybe?
b) What is the best way of selling these if I decide to buy a Split? Is there an exchange offer that you guys are aware of?

Thanks in advance folks.

Just a quick question.

Why do people prefer split AC's over Window AC's ?

Three factors I know.

1. Noise level.
2. You can locate the compressor in an ideal location (split)
3. You need to drill a large hole for window AC's.

Any other ?

A newer fashion statement ..... thats it!

And who said that you have to drill a large hole for window a/c? Why not set it up on the existing windows...? The a/c installation guys would know what to do ... a bit of a carpenter's job is also done by them at a small extra cost.

just booked a whirlpool aviator 5 split ac last Saturday. It has 5 star rating and is 1.5 ton.

EER is 3.24 for the same.

You will need a hole exactly the size of the the AC, right ? What if the existing window is too narrow ?

Make the existing window broader by chipping off the edges ..... that would be easier and more practical than blasting a new hole through masonry ... right?

LOL  visit HowStuffWorks - Learn How Everything Works! and understand how airconditioning works. The same air is circulated in the room and it is cooled by expansion and contraction of freon gas.

Well the pressure might reduce due to decrease in air temperature but there are enough hairline gaps through which air can enter.

So how does the carbon monoxide or dioxide we breathe out get removed from the stale air?

Regards

hey avidyarthy, yo umentioned that haier makes ACs for all the big guys, how are Haier branded ACs?

Hi,

As I mentioned, they are good. Going strong in their forth years. Since I didn't face any issues so far, not sure of their aftersales service.

Cheers,

Okay, in a bit of irresponsibility I went and got a Hitachi quadricool 1.1 window AC. So I can see for myself if the reverence for Hitachi is justified :). The best price available for this is 21,690 incluing, stabliser and delivery at Rathna Fan House in Chennai, and they offered between 2000-2500 as exchange price for my old non-functional 1.5 ton assembled AC. For other reasons I bought from someone I know, but this is a pretty decent deal (the one at Rathna Fan House).

Yes yes absolutely. The most important thing is an ac is the compressor. If that is running fine you can get everything else serviced. Try a routine service with Gas filling. It may cost around 1500-2000 with gas filling.

Its does not, however it will take several days before you start feeling dizzy and breathless. Carbon dioxide is around 0.039% of the air and it should rise to 7.5% to get you feeling uncomfortable. All offices have a fresh air induction system. At home we should open all windows to allow fresh air to circulate on a daily basis.
