If the bluray has a 2D version of the 3D content on the disc, that will be playable on the 2D only BDP.

Not sure if the 3D version will play at all on the 2D BDP or even if it does, whether you would want to watch it and have your eyes and head hurt.

Note that your TV has to also support 3D content and not just the BDP.

The 3D content on the bluray remains untouched through all of this and will play on a 3D BDP when you upgrade to a 3D capable BDP, TV.

1) Most 3D bluray discs have content in both 2D as well as 3D
2) 3D disc (content) will only play with a 3D Player
3) 3D disc (content) will not play with a 2D player
4) So if you a 3D only disc (content)-- then you need both a 3D Player as well as 3D TV to watch the disc
5) If your disc has both 2D and 3D-- watching with 3D player & 3D TV-- you can select whether you want to watch it in 2D or 3D
6) If either your player or TV is 2D then you only watch 2D-- assuming that the disc has 2D content

As of now I am not intented to play 3d on a 2d player, I just want to know that a 3d bd can be played in a 2d player in 2d format

There are 3D movies set which has a separate 2D disc. Few others are bundled with 2D on the same disc. For example, the Indian version of most 3D movies has only one disc and it has both 3D & 2D (i.e. Amazing Spiderman, Tintin, MIB-3 etc). But most of the US/ UK 3D versions has separate 3D & 2D movies in the same box. In any case, if you buy a 3D movie the 2D versions comes free whether separate disc or in the same disc. The player identifies the hardware & format available and suggest to play accordingly. In my case, I have a 3D player, but I don't have a display with 3D capability, so if I try to play 3D movie it prompts that the hardware for 3D is not available. Hope it clears your doubt.

The matrix from THTPRO is accurate.

I think the 3D playback depends on the software part and not the hardware part except that you need atleast a HDMI 1.3b or 1.4 cable (not sure about this part?). The disc player is just a disc with the laser to read the content but it is the software which will be able to decode the content. I think I read on the net somewhere that a simple 4x capable blu-ray drive is capable of 3D playback provided you have the necessary software like TMT or PowerDVD which can decode the 3D content and show the same. And ofcourse a 3D capable TV also is needed.

Pls correct if I am wrong :)

On HTPC software can be easily installed but on stand alone player its not possible unless its a firmware. (talking to hardware)

Companies will never update any firmware which will allow to play 3d on 2d (through software) even though its possible. That's because they are interested in selling new products and not in upgrading what they have not promised for.

All answers above are correct. I have two BDPs - a 2D player (Sony) and 3D player (Panasonic). I have a few 3D movies/documentaries. Hugo 3D, IMAX - Space Station and IMAX - Under the Sea all have a single disc that has 2D and 3D versions on the same disc. Premtheus 3D on the other hand has two separate discs - one for 3D and one for 2D. Here are my (actual) observations:
  • When a disc containing 3D+2D content is popped in a 2D player, a message pop ups in the beginning stating that "This disc contains 3D content that is not compatible with your 2D player" or some such text. There is an OK button. After clicking the OK button, the menu is displayed. The "3D" option is hidden from the menu.
  • If the above disc features autoplay (direct movie play instead of menu), the disc starts playing the 2D content.
  • If a pure 3D disc is popped in, the disc refuses to play with an error message.
HTH.

As pointed earlier, the 3D discs is nothing but two L/R streams together. Its always possible for a normal 2D player to just see it as a 2D disc and play only left stream. Its in the Bluray spec.

However, some studios restrict that. For example, Disney gives out a regular 2D disc along with their 3D set. So they do not allow 3D disc to be played back on a 2D player Nor allow the 3D disc to be played back as 2D disc. Disney wants that disc to be played only on 3D player connected to 3D display only. But understand that its the restriction set by authoring studio, not the BDA.
