40$ Raspberry Pi - Could this be the latest HTPC?

Any reason one would choose Raspberry over Asus o'Play mini for HTPC reasons alone? Especially when using with HD videos, i couldn't find much advantage in using Raspberry.

For HTPC, only reason to choose Raspberry would be ability to tweak it the way you want to, that includes adding apps like GTalk/Skype to do Video Chat with TV.

For average users, it would not make sense since he would need to add a Box/Cabinet + IR Remote for this to become a complete package.

hmm..makes sense. As i already have all the fancy apps in iPad, i would rather prefer not to have them in my TV.

Any one who loves Open elec/XBMC's features as well as who wants to cut down their electricity bills like me will choose raspberry pi :) over any other solution.

Tweaker s hobby testers can eat the pie but average users will face pain paying for the card remember a card is NOT a player

consider : pi +casing, adapter,IR rx tx + remote + 200hours of tweaking = Ok type media player, update

Oplay : plug and play

why you want to take unnecessary pain

Again you are defeating the very purpose of your signature, which I believe many of the people might have got inspired..

Thanks

Also PI is a pc with an OS and option to install xbmc, foobar etc. I was thinking of using this for USB out to asynchronous dac , already has Ethernet for connecting to nas storage.

That's exactly what I would be trying to do if I go the Raspberry way...

Even I am waiting for the Pi issues being sorted out with the usb dac. Once the PA (Pulse Audio) is implemented with the Debian Linux OS (with the support for USB DAC's) then I think the combination of Pi with ODAC is the cheapest/smallest form music-pc which will be hard to beat.

My ODAC has landed in India and once the issues with Pi are sorted out thinking of getting the Pi and pair it with my ODAC.

Thanks

Yesterday I too stumbled upon this and my friend is in London this week - but not sure how to order and buy it.

Raspberry Pi Model B - NOW WITH 512MB RAM !!! @ CPC - 29.95 delivered - Hot UK Deals

You need to book the item here. But looking at the thread I do not see anybody getting the delivery as of now. So check it out and book the item.

Edit 1: Checked the Farnell site (official Pi manufacturer in UK) and it is not in stock :-(
Edit 2: It is also available in India at elements14 site. You can book it now and it will be delivered in 3 weeks time.

Thanks

ordered the 512 MB Pi today from Element 14...any feedback on which is the best distro to install in this baby? I will use this exclusively for running xbmc and nothing else...openelec comes to mind but I guess that has to be built for the ARM architecture...since I dont have a linux running PC this will be difficult...any links for getting a built out openelec that I can simply put into the SD card and use?

and finally, refrained from ordering the custom Debian build with the Pi as it was going for almost 1k, seems like a lot for an open source build on a 200 rs. SD card, any feedback on whether it is worth it spending 1k?

Element14 is asking for sales tax no.. during registration... there is also an option (If you don't have sales tax reg no .. click on Shopping.kitsnspares.com ) But I could not find Raspberry Pi on this. Can anyone provide me with thelink.
I have placed an order with RS online but their price seem to be higher than Element14... 3450 vs 2750 Rs INR...

Unfortunately element 14 took some time to process the order and by that time all stock of raspberry pi 512mb has flown off the shelf!!! They has more than 200 pieces in stock till yesterday in singapore, and all are gone in less than 24 hours, now I am in no mood to wait for 5-6 weeks to get it...my only other option seems to be buying from eBay, which only has the 256mb board available now...

Wanted fm feedbacks on how the raspberry 256mb is fairing at their end in running xbmc, I am finding some comments on the net but I trust hfv members over anything...would appreciate your feedback of how xbmc is running (any build) n the raspberry from the point of view of:

1. Speed of navigation through the menus
2. Quality of 1080p playback (upto 10-12 Mbps bitrate) when played locally.

Cheers...
