Hi All,

I know that the subject of this topic might instigate a lot of people to answer straight off the bat to go for HX 850, but, I would really request you to think about the overall experience and guide me.

I have been using a Samy 29" CRT Pure Flat screen for almost a decade  (I know it's a stone-age TV now) and I've decided to upgrade my set to a 55 incher to fit well in my new house (the living room of the house is 22 feet long but I'll be placing the sofas and seating arrangement from 12-15 feet onwards = viewing distance).

My usage will be mostly regular 2D TV with a little bit of console gaming (PS3) and medium internet and DVD usage. Also, BD and 3D usage would be low. I would be buying a set top box (Tata Sky with HD package) soon.

I went to Kohinoor (Kandivali, Mumbai) today and they offered Samy ES 6200 for Rs. 150000/- (with BD 3D player free) and Sony HX 850 for Rs. 209000/- (HX 750 was for some Rs. 165000 something).

I went through a lot of posts before starting this thread, and everywhere, when in comparison with Samsung, people have always praised and recommended the HX 850.

I spoke to a few friends and went through some forums wherein a lot of people have complained about the line pattern that gets developed in Sony TVs over a usage of a couple of months. In spite of this flaw which seems to be apparent to so many, why do people still recommend this?

Also, the Samy seemed feature rich to me wherein the web browser looked breezy and it supports all video formats whereas Sony HX series doesn't support popular video formats nor does it supports external hard disks in NTFS format.

Yet, across this forum, Sony has got the maximum recommendations which has puzzled me enough to start this thread.

While comparing the displays of both the units in the store, I felt satisfied with Samsung as I could hardly make out any difference (forgive me if I've color blind :P). Also, the prize difference of more than 50k mattered since HX 850 was giving me less things as compared to the Samy.

So please guide me with your suggestions.

Both are good tv. However, you should pit ES 8000 against HX850. The blacks on HX850 are supposed to be better. If you compare ES 6200, HX850 will be better as per reviews. However the right Sammy model to compare with Sony 850 would be ES8000. I have seen 40" HX850 in a showroom and it is a good LED tv. As far as looks are concerned, I found HX850 and the latest LG tvs to have the best looks.

If you are ok with Samsung ES 6200, you could invest the money saved in buying a good AVR and speakers. The small speakers in all slim televisions leave a lot to be desired. For watching movies, sound is also an important part of the experience.

Best LED TV for 2012: Sony HX850 vs. Samsung ES8000.

At the end of the day it is YOU, who is going to be watching the TV. And since you have already compared both TVs yourself and couldn't spot any major difference in PQ, then I suggest getting the Samsung ES6200. Not to mention savings of 60+k :)

I know what should be going on within you for the Tv. I was also having the same feeling when i was in the market to get a 55" 3D TV. It was a quite challenging task for me. I ran from store to store to get the demo of all the possible brands.
Either it be the HX series from Sony or the ES from samy, I ran through all and at last I finished my search getting the 55" LM8600 from LG.

@mbhangui - ES 8000 was retailing at Rs. 2,50,000/- which was a little off my budget (I can shell upto 2,10,000). You're suggestion regarding the AVR is helpful. If I buy the ES 6200, with the 60k that I save, I'm thinking of pairing it with a Harmon Kardon system coupled with JBL speakers for better audio performance (4.1 or 5.1).

@avmaxfan - Yes but in spite of the problems in Sony TVs, why does it still keep getting all recommendations and praises? Are these problems pointed out by me only limited to a rare cases? I have gone through many of your posts wherein you've given this recommendation hence this direct question :)

@Indian11 - I have compared both TVs through the standard TV program that was running in the background (KBC with Shahrukh and Katrina :P). I will go to the store and ask for a demo for both units today and give my feedback.

@shaiju_o_thomas - If 3D isn't such a big concern, would you still recommend Samy?

thank you guys for your quick responses. But would request you to comment on the few issues I highlighted about Sony TVs -
1. Line problem in display
2. Not able to support NTFS external drives
3. Web browsing isn't as good as Samsung and the App store is no where closer to what Samsung can offer (words of the Kohinoor sales-man)
4. Almost equal picture quality between Samy ES 6200 and Sony HX 850 & 750

I have the budget to pick up the HX 850 but I'm really not convinced with the HX issues given above. Please suggest.

Sorry to say, the Sony would have been far better choice over LG unless you are 3D fan.

I am not a 3D fan but I was looking for a 3D TV. and As per me, I don't think there is any brand above LG when it comes to 3D segment...

To recap of above:

The HX850 is the second best TV series from Sony. It should be compared with the Samsung 7 Series. The Samsung ES6200 should be compared with the 55HX750 and herein you will find price parity as well.

You should never even look at the smart features and other such paraphernalia when considering a TV. The TV's main job is to display video and that is where it should excel. PQ is the top line, middle line and bottom line for TV. Smart features are something that you will rarely use.

Next you mentioned about media format support. While it is true that Sony is a slight laggard in this area, this is not a real game spoiler. One can always couple this with a media player.

The main issue is the price. Sony will be more expensive than others. I personally felt that Sony offers better PQ than others. I would gladly pay a premium for that. But it is an individual perception. If you feel that Sony and Samsung models that you looked at did not give you any perceptible difference, then obviously save money and go with the cheaper option. I will recommend 55HX750 which is just a notch below HX850.

Remember: while comparing, do an apple to apple comparison.

- change the picture mode to 'Standard' or 'Normal' or equivalent
- do a factory reset of the setting
- play back SD content; do not judge on HD content; in the store they usually play some brilliant HD content of wonderfully coloured houses, against pristine blue skies, brightly coloured clothed people, flowers, scenery, etc. Try playing a news channel with crappy video instead.
- look for sharpness, smoothness of motion, background details, black levels, etc.

Please elaborate...my tv has crossed 2500 hrs of usage...never seen such issue.

55 sony 750 is best choice as your Bd playing wont be very high.
so neck to neck difference from 750 and 850 wont ber visible to you...
save some money getting 750 and get a audio stuff with the saved money...

for side by side compare...
apart from Mr kix's idea you can try this.
play original BD hollywood movie.....
make setting in both tvs same.your disk or files....not their stamndard demo disks...people roaming, cat sleeping, people having tea from exotic cups..not those recordings.
settings
movie mode
all 45.brighness,contrast,picture,color,etc
backlight 50 %

look for black dressed persons say for example....fast action scenes .....close shots for skin tone...daylight scenes....shadow detail in night scene..say a ghost movie..or harry potter..all new bond movies/dark knight/men in black 2....are excellent for tests..

also i heard sony has some offer getting a 490 bd player at 7k or like that with a tv....ask for that..

@just4kix - thanks for detailing the exact points to be looked at during comparison. I'll do that in the next 1-2 days and give my feedback.

@lake1988 - the line problem seemed common in Sony TVs (I first found this on Google and later spoke to a few friends who own Sony LCDs and ratified this information).

@prosenjit - thanks to you as well for detailing the items for side by side comparison (I think someone can simply start a sticky thread with these suggestions which comes in handy to a lot of new buyers like me - a suggestion and shoutout to the admins here :)). Sony is offering a BD 3D player only on the 950 series - that too, its a package deal for which the customer has to shell out another 10k (as compared to Samsung, the BD player is free with the ES 6200). The HX 850, 750 and the likes just get an 8 GB pen drive free.

Day 2 of my search: Went to Croma next to my house and inquired about the same TVs. Took a demo of the 3D feature in ES 6200 - not that impressed. For internet browsing, it seemed really troublesome to do it through the standard remote offered. The salesman confirmed that both the Samy and Sony have a software that can be installed on phones to operate the internet feature of the TV through the keypad of a phone. Also, Croma certainly had a higher pricing than Kohinoor.

+1 for prosenjit. I also had the same confusion about Samy es6200 and Sony Hx750. But settled for Sony HX750 55". The PQ of Sony is little superior to samy 6200. But offcourse it depends upon individuals views. Also HX850 is superior to HX750 in black levels and overall PQ, but costiler by 50K. Hence settled for HX750 and looking out for gud HT setup.

to op
yes as you never talked about plasma..so did not suggest you.
you seriorlsy buy sammy 51e8000 plasma.....and save straight 70k and still get a better picture.also at 1.1 lakh if you buy panasonic GT 50 incher....
with proper setting and in a dark room and a solid material....belive me even costlier leds will put themselves in shame to match up with the plasmas...
yes demo is very important.....to understand your taste...u may love the plasma picture palate...or hate it...its compltly upto you.

but demo please before a final decision.also read LED vs plasma for knowing both pros and cons....

TV SET you will never regret the buy because the picture quality is by far the best when compared to my Panasonic V20 Plasma.

Gaming on PS3 is better on HX850 comparing my Panasonic V20

A shoutout to all HX750 owners - Have you used and faced any issues with the viewing angle, WiFi connectivity or browsing You Tube videos?

I went through a lot of posts of Amazon wherein people have generally complained about

1. the Viewing angle on Sony isn't too wide. You have to sit directly in front of the TV to enjoy it. Any deviation in the straight angle reduces the overall effect
2. WiFi not being able to connect even if the TV is in range
3. You Tube doesn't directly stream videos from You Tube servers. The You Tube App on Sony contacts the Sony servers and streams videos from there (here you would find only a limited set of videos)
4. Web browser is sluggish and takes a lot of time in opening/rendering. Also, the web browser will only display content from Sony websites and its does NOT let you browse through the free internet
5. The Smart TV experience (Internet/Media connectivity) on Sony is very slow and unresponsive

I'm a bit worried now since I booked the Sony 55" HX750 yesterday. Please help people. I can still go ahead and cancel the booking and go for HX850 or ES6200 once I'm clear on the above issues.

smart feuture/browser depends on net speed...so a very good speed is needed.its not tv's fault.also if it is tv's fault i will be glad to have hx750 with that faulty smart chip....as it is very nice in picture.... which is supposed to be its main job.....i will use my laptop or media plare for the smart works........
well for viewing angle case plasma is king(even the cheapest ones)....and what matters..u wont be sitting at high angles to experiment..u will be sitting at centres only..........
so be happy with hx 750.....its best in its class......mid range led modesl......
oh very imp.......friend please do some read in the threads....never book a tv and go home....pick the tv right in the shop and go home.otherwise dealers will send you a demo piece repacked....you go to the shop and ask for a fresh piece from godown in front of you check seal....and then only take it.if he insists he doesnot have a fresh one and take this(he will surely).....dont fall in the trap.you paid full amount or a emi case??
ask for a fresh piece deliverd right in front of you........

@prosenjit - Thanks for the quick reply. Smart features like browsing, watching videos online, streaming through my pc, connecting my hard disk and playing videos are important for me and hence I'm stressing on the same. Viewing angle... I'm still confused since I have a L-shaped sofa which is 8-12-15 ft (not sure) from the TV. Regarding the booking, I have just paid the advance so that I don't lose out on the Diwali offer (not given them the full amount as yet). Also, I have made it very clear to Kohinoor guys that I will immediately send the TV back if not found to be a new piece.

Once again, a shoutout to all owners of HX750 to help me out.

My TV buying experience till now:

Day 3: After visiting Hypercity, Kohinoor and Croma, went to Vijay Sales to check if they can still match the offer that Kohinoor has made till now, and as expected, I was disappointed. I took a demo of the HX 750 (only model on display at Vijay Sales, Goregaon) and was impressed with the 3D picture

I forgot to add the list of products I'm buying in the beginning of the thread just to give everyone a perspective on the reason for me to visit so many stores and look for a bargain. Here's the list of things I'm buying this Diwali:

1. 55" 3D LED TV (Samsung ES 6200 / Sony HX 750 / HX 850) - 1 piece
2. 32" HD LED TV (Samsung EH 4000 / Sony anything) - 2 pieces
3. 22" HD LED TV (Samsung EH 4003 / Sony anything) - 1 piece
4. Home Theater (Harmon Kardon / Denon / Yamaha) - 1 piece
5. DVD/Blue Ray player (If I don't get it free with Samsung ES 6200) (Philips / Sony / Anything) - 1 piece
6. PS 3 with play - 1 piece
7. 2 Ton AC - 1 piece
8. 1 Ton AC - 2 pieces
9. Fridge - 2 pieces
10. Washing Machine - 2 peices
11. Kitchen stuff (Mixer, Water Purifier, Vaccum Cleaner, Blender) - 1 piece each

Day 4: Went back to Kohinoor since none of the retailers could match the price that Kohinoor was offering me on the total price of all the above appliances. Did a side-by-side comparison of the ES 6200, HX 750 and the HX 850 as suggested by just4kix and prosenjit and Sony definitely was a winner in picture quality. My parents selected the HX 850 but I convinced them not to spend an extra 60k on a barely noticeable difference in quality as compared to the HX 750. I told them that we can buy the Harmon Kardon + PS 3 in that money and they agreed (although reluctantly):D

On day 2, Kohinoor had earlier agreed to offer the ES 6200 at 1,30,000 (20k discount) considering the host of things I'm buying. Today, when I changed it HX 750, I was asked to pay 15k extra (TV price would be 1,45,000 :indifferent14:). Plus, I would lose out on the free 3D Blue Ray player offered by Samsung on the ES 6200 . So if I calculate the total losses for going with slightly higher picture quality, its:

1. 15000 for selecting HX 750 over ES 6200
2. 10000 for buying an additional 3D Blue Ray player (which was free with ES 6200). I'll have to buy this anyhow since the Harmon Kardon I'm planning to buy is an AV receiver and does not have a slot to insert CDs/DVDs
3. Total = 25000/-

Here, my parents said, "We've tried Samsung which has been running extremely well for the last 10 year, why not try changing the brand to Sony and try something new." Hearing this, we immediately booked the HX 750 and gave the advance yesterday.

This is now put me in a predicament due to the issues I've highlighted above. So please suggest people :)
