55 inch OLED TV by LG - available in Korea from Feb

^^^ Of you remember futuristic movies such as Total Recall, you can create your pseudo windows with thin oled panel or paste the oled panel to the wall as a pure play display device replacing the projector screen. What say you?

I agree to your view point, but will those panels be reliable ? Even other wise, saving a couple of inches on the wall, will it be of any significant or very useful benefit except to say how thin they are ... Leaving it all these aside, my biggest concern is the Panel lifespan, endurance and reliability. It was from these perspective, I want the manufacturers to focus more on Product endurance rather than focussing too much on others aspects which are not truly beneficial.

I would say for having 50 oled TV in Rs-1,25,000 you need to wait for next 10 years I think..before that its hard to be available at this price tag.

There is no dearth for idiots in this country and the world as such who would like to pay more for a thinner set than for the quality. They call this "aesthetic sense". They have a lot of spare money and for them a TV is like buying a painting. They enjoy to show it off when it is off.

One side effect of a thinner set is a thinner sound with shallow bass. Any way it is expected that today's flat TVs should be paired with a separate sound system(ST50's sound is incredible and the bass is deeper BTW:licklips:).

It seems the low lives take refuge in PQ who cant afford costlier sets. Plasma fans certainly belong to this class, it so seems.

^^^ The st50 has eight speakers, AFAIK, and hence better sound but nothing to boat about.

I don't find the rationale behind making TV panels thinner day-by-day. I agree the TV should not be too big to occupy a room, but what the point is in making the panels further thinner ? I guess all these manufacturers wants to market by saying how thinner their panels are and I personally don't see any sense or logic in making them thinner beyond some point. I understand the case for other gadgets like Laptop, ipad/ipod, mobile phones, etc which are carried in hands and people would have a feel good factor in carrying thinner and slim gadgets, but to extend the same to flat panel TVs, I feel it is utter non-sense. All the modern HDTVs are thin these days and making it further thin does not have any rationale other then the stupid marketing logic. They can be made look beautiful with other things, but not making them thinner. My only concern is - by making panels thinner day-by-day, are the designs getting more complex and so vulnerable to design/manufacturing defects ... Going against the laws of nature beyond a limit will invite certain side effects.

I disagree with you - if you agree in case of gadgets then why not for TVs?
I mean its just the part of technology enhancement; if Samsung and LG are making thinner TV screens there isnt any harm in accepting them I guess! In fact majority of people prefer to have such thinner TVs in their living areas.

However, I agree the pricing factor is major downfall behind but they may reach at economic level in future too.

Don't you think the super-thin TV panel is just related to design. As we know almost all brands have the same features in their top range TV category when it comes to technical aspects. And, from the past few years flat panel TVs have their own niche in TV market somewhere because of their slim designs. Same with premium TVs like LG's 55 inch OLED TV. I can summaries it like TV manufactures are not only giving the priority in technical aspects, but also in design aspect in terms of elegance.

Honestly I am not against TVs becoming slimmer, but I was trying to drive a different point. I understand majority of people do look for elegance as well and they will like their TV becoming ultra slim. I am not saying the majority doesn't look for reliability nor I am against TV looking elegant, but in the process of making it elegant and slimmer, will it lead to dip in the reliability ?
So my limited point is - Do the manufacturers make unintentional compromise on the panel reliability in passion for making panels elegant ?
As far as I am aware of, complexity increases with the panels becoming flatter. Since the panels are becoming thinner day by day, manufacturing error tolerance is also becoming smaller. Since the error tolerance is smaller for thinner panels, the probablility of producing faulty panels will also increase. Let the technology and design grow, but the manufacturing process of that complex technology for mass production should also improve.

So my final point is this - Let the manufascturers make panels slimmer, but they should also give equal (if not, then more) importance to the reliability. They should design such that the panels have both reliability and elegant look on top of PQ. My another worry is about the cost cutting done by major brands and so indirectly leading to the dip in the quality control.
