All That Jazz ...

A few modern jazz releases that have been on constant rotation.

Everyone's heard of Floating Points / Pharoah Sanders - Promises but the other three are really worth your time too.
Jaubi - Nafs at Peace: This is a band from Pakistan that mixes Hindustani instrumentation with jazz fusion along with London flautist Tenderlonius. An incrediblly spiritual experience.
Nala Sinephro - Space 1.8: This is a mix of electronic music and jazz by a Belgian harpist released on Warp records. Highly recommend if you liked Promises.
Yussef Kamaal - Black Focus: One of the cornerstones of the modern UK jazz scene, this short-lived band lead by Kamaal William's on the keys and Yussef Dayes on the drums as well as Shabaka Hutchings on the sax, it mixes jazz fusion with broke beat to create an incredibly chill, head-bopping record that's all killer no filler.

@acemachine26

Super recommendations! Especially liked the Black Focus album.
I’m pretty sure you must have heard Nubya Garcia and Maisha already. If not, do give them a listen.
Btw, love your rack and album display :)

Latin Jazz. Listening to Whipped Cream & Other Delights by Herb Alpert, an American trumpeter who led Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s. During the same decade, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Throughout his career, Alpert has recorded 28 albums that have landed on the Billboard 200 chart, five of which became No. 1 albums ; while also achieving 14 platinum albums and 15 gold albums. Alpert is the only musician to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).

I especially love El Garbanzo and Peanuts in this album. Sound of trumpet - heavenly bliss. Other album I love is "I'm Tijuana Taxi" notably Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea, Cinco De Mayo, If I were a Rich Man, Walk Don't Run and Magic Trumpet.

Of late, I’ve been searching out these multi-album compilations for various reasons:
- they’re dirt cheap as compared to buying individual albums
- quite a few of the individual albums are oop
- friends and family don’t mind carrying 7-8 CDs in their hand baggage, rather than 29!
- sq is actually pretty good

Hey sorry disappeared. I was so binging on nonsense that didn’t listen for a long time. Or listened to classical. Or Alt rock (Afghan Whigs after a long time). So here is what I listened today.

Really nice how it opens with the trumpet (melody stated brokenly) and then harmony with sax and then on to the main theme with trumpet mute. Love the audio kicks out of listening to that “wump wump” sound of the mute

Also listen to a lovely Bemsha swing

This has an unusual brilliant quirky tuba solo. And a super recording too.

Really enjoyed that Don Cherry album. Top recommendation. Thanks.
Good to have you back!

Teena Marie's first album - Wild and Peaceful, a great mixture of Jazz, Soul, & Funk. My favs here are the jazzy Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before), and I'm Gonna Have My cake (And Eat it Too). What a beautiful voice she had.

@sunilj
I find Truffaz to be one of the better Miles clones. There’s a remix album of his called Revisite that you should also check out. Will post a pic later.

One of the most amazing guitarists around, it’s unfortunate that Charlie Hunter is not more widely known. He plays an 8 string guitar and usually makes it sound like a Hammond organ. Plays the bass lines himself, too.
Btw, ‘everybody has a plan...’ is a Mike Tyson quote :)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
