Hi,
I tried to search this on the forums but couldn't find much except some threads pointing to Onkyo AVR firmware upgrade options..
I have a Yam 863.. was reading on avsforums that there are ways to upgrade the firmware in AVR through CD or RS232 connection..
My questions are as follows..
1) Where are firmware updates available..
For eg I found a link (Driver YAMAHA RX-V863, software or drivers YAMAHA RX-V863 & update - Diplodrivers), but it seems a fake..
2) Are the firmware updates effective to improve the quality of multichannel sound reproduction (software decoders such as neo-6/7.1 enhancer etc) apart from the usual HDMI fixes..
3) Has anybody tried updating the firmware on AVR, if yes can he/she share the exact procedure..
4) It is a minor thing in my receiver, I was looking for fix through firmware upgrade..whenever I increase the sound volume of the front/rear speakers to more that 75%, during a movie with a sudden volume surge the AVR shuts down (goes into protection mode), this I have been able to fix only using the YPAO with creating more noise during calibration, but I need a permanent fix..

jayad08,

Though it is quite tempting for the technically inclined to do firmware updates on their own, most AVR manufacturers do NOT recommend customers to upgrade the firmware themselves. It may also void your warranty assuming your receiver is still under warranty.

Since you have already found that a firmware upgrade will solve the volume issue in your AVR, did you speak to the Yamaha service center? If your AVR is still under warranty, the update could be free of cost.

oh.. right so it is not that common to update the firmwares urself like some of the other hifi equipment..
i know that firmware update is available somewhere which fixes the HDMI issues, but not sure about the audio volume issue..
in case i wd have to take the AVR to yahama service center, then i wd rather drop the idea..i still have the workaround YPAO available..

hi jayad

tripping at 75:/: volume level at demanding scenes
well , sorry to tell but IMO there wudnt be a fix
Had the same issues with onkyo ,till i got rid of the amp

The answer is your driving the amp beyound its capabilites

No Updates will solve this problem ,unless this is happening due to some incorrect wiring (spkrs wires)

still if u wud want a fix, the Company guys need to replace the unit with better capacitors which may not happen as they will give you some vague reasons and have no CLUE

regards

hey subhash..
thanks.. i was surfing through the avsforum official threads for yamaha 863 yesterday and came across posts which talked about firmware..so this crossed my mind.. i am quite satisfied with the current performance of the AVR.. but you know that thing.. the update/upgrade bug.. i thought that maybe the process is simple as updating BIOS for PC or updating firmware for cellphone..but seems it is not simple..
i wd rather not take my AVR to the service center just for upgrading firmware..

have gone thro this issue and had enough
IMO no firmware upgrade will help
only solution --try Avoiding to push the amp beyond its capability ---or

:) UPGRADE:)

I did perform a firmware upgrade for my Onkyo Nr905 by using a straight RS232 cable through an old computer which had that port. I came across the new FW from AVS forum and applied the same as per the instructions but it also warned that there might be certain issues that might permanently damage my AVR but that risk was very little and the advantages was more so I took the risk and upgraded the firmware and to my horror after that upgrade my problems worsened and I had to eventually take the help of Onkyo Service to fix the problems for which they gave me a bill of 45K.
Since then I have learnt it as they say in US that don't try to fix a think if it ain't broken.

Hemant, I would request you to delete/edit your post. It is in very bad taste, and has no relevance to the thread.

Cheers

I don't get the logic. Manufacturer supplies bad firmware and makes you pay for support when it breaks your system?

I guess since most manufacturers are not very sure about the firmware updates, they strongly discourage customers from applying the firmware themselves and hence the disclaimer in the product warranty information that customers applying firmware on their own will void the warranty.
