Astonia SC 300 Stereo Amplifier - Budget Performer !!

@athirst: I heard the Tsi100s at ProFX and they sounded quite good with a Denon Amp (forget which one). I guess you are referring to Q acoustics 1010i, I see them on ebay for ~12k - will listen to them too.

@keith_correa: I understand its a risk buying an Amp that you haven't listened to... but what the heck, its just 3.5k - how bad could it be? I want to get something quick and almost even bought a Philips boombox last weekend - surely this setup would be better than that!

I have just placed the order for the Astonia and am still wondering whether there would be any problem in pairing it with Yamaha NS8390 floor standers (help guys!).

The person at Astonia said it should be fine but I intend to take the Amp to Music Square Indiranagar to actually listen to how it sounds with the Yamahas. Music Square is offering these for 16k. I guess that would be negotiable if one was able to buy these for under 13k at Hypercity.

@Prabhu,

With 16k budget I suggest you to look in to PSB Alpha B1 , Paradigm Atom monitor or Wharfedale 9.1 bookshelf speakers. Will sound much better than entry level yamaha floorstanders.

@prabhu take the call..its your money.i hope you will do a honest review..

i rarely see unhappy users putting review

but i am recommending Topping Tp20

pSB are also awesome ,package deals are not always good..
most newbies hurry up,i can observe that
better wait and go discrete discrete discrete ...

Wow..Ordered the amp already ?? Am eagerly waiting for ur feedback on the amp.. especially amp+NS8390 combo :) .. NS8390 is costing 13.5k here in Hyderabad.

@Kittu: Thank you for the suggestions. The amp was shipped today morning. If it reaches me by Saturday then I intend to check how the Yamaha FS sound with it. I will also try some of the speakers you listed. Any ideas on where I should audition them?

@Kaushik: I will try write a review but if I do not then it will not be because I am unhappy! It is just that I have never written a product review before and am unsure of my abilities to evaluate sound quality. I know that is not a good excuse and there is always a first time to doing things. Actually, I think you can count on me to write a stinker if this does not sound really much better than my 10 year old so-far-trusted Sony micro Hi-Fi system that cost me ~$50 ;-) I would really be disappointed!

@Rajachiru: Music Square told me that the price can be discussed after I audition the speakers. I hope to get it for ~13k

Anyway, I spent some time to google whether it is a problem to have a small Amp drive some big Speakers, but only ended up more confused than before I had started I still do not understand the cause and effect of clipping! So, I asked Vaibhav (from Astonia), he got back with the following:
The Amp [SC300] will not damage the speakers [Yamaha 8390]. Take care to lower the volume at the time of turning the amp ON/OFF. This goes for all the amps. Also Take care that you dont short the speaker leads when the amp is on. All Speaker wiring is to be done with the amp turned off.

He also wrote that - "If you don't like the amp, you can return it to us for a full refund." I do not know whether this is fairly standard but for me this sounded like these guys seemed to be quite very confident of their product!

I have run floorstanders (max RMS power 300 watt) with a 20 wpc amp (NAD 310). If the Yamahas are sufficiently sensitive (too lazy to look it up right now :) ), you can get decent listening volume with 25 wpc amp.

Clipping is a bad thing. The amplifier is said to be clipping when its output stage reaches either its voltage or current limit. However, there is no need to panic. Your ears will tell you when the amp start to distort. Just keep the volume low initially and experiment till you find how far it is safe to go.

For causes of clipping, check the Wikipedia entry. It has a nice explanation. If still not clear, ask.

Prabhu, have you received the amp? What are your first impressions with it? Please post.

Thanks.

Sent him a PM and he replied that he will be giving a detailed review by this weekend. and he gave a quick update saying that "The Amp is built quite poorly but sounds fantastic with the 8390. " .. :)

So lets wait for an in depth review :)

I received the Astonia SC300 a couple of weeks back.

It was packed well. The original box was put into a larger cardboard box with thermocol fillers. There was no documentation apart from a single page that listed the specifications and warranty details (6 months).

The amp looks quite allright (Astonia audio) but is not put together well. On inspection one can see uneven gaps between the front panel and the metal plate that covers the top and sides. A little pressure on the top, back or front causes the plates to move and the gap to widen.

I took the amp to Music Square Indiranagar. They did not have the 8390 and I was asked to audition other comparable Floor standers. I do not remember the exact models but think one of them was F140. The sales person first hooked up their supposedly-cheapest FS (~22K) to the Astonia and I heard Hotel California, some trance kind-of music and then a scene from the Hulk. The sound was generally very good (to my untrained ears ;-) but bass was not quite tight (especially during the start of Hotel California) as compared to the best system I had heard (it was at Cinebels, ~6 months back, the whole system had cost around 1 lakh). I was happy to buy these but wanted to compare the amp with a Yamaha amp, so he hooked up these speakers with a Yamaha amp (something that cost ~25K) and the sound was almost the same (I couldn't sense any difference). While listening to this, the sales supervisor came in and asked for another pair of FS to be tried for better bass. These actually sounded much better than the first pair - the bass in Hotel California was tighter, the conversation in the Hulk scene was more comprehensible despite all the bullets and bombs going off. I then asked for it to be hooked up to the Astonia, again they sounded really very good.
I was quite happy but assumed these would be way outside my budget. To my surprise, this second FS was cheaper (~20K), the sales supervisor told me that it was an older model and said that the newer models are not quite built well in spite of being priced higher.

I then asked him about the 8390, he said those FS were even better but I'd have to wait for atleast a month for them. He said they cost 17.5K and as with other speakers, he could offer a 10% discount. I asked for a final price and he said 15K and atleast one month for delivery.

I asked him what he thought about the Amp - he had never heard of Astonia and said that they sounded quite good. He was clearly very impressed when I told him that these cost only 3.5K.

Anyway I couldn't wait for a month. So I left planning to audition the other speakers suggested above before making up my mind.

Next day I was to go for lunch near Whitefield and on my way back, I luckily decided to stop over at Hyper City. They had the 8390 and I thought it sounded very good with a Yamaha Amp (this was a mall and it was difficult to judge sound quality with all the background noise). The price was 13.5K and they said they could deliver the very next day. I was happy to go with this but while making the payment they informed me that they did not have these in their godown and would need to get it from Mumbai (1 week delay). I asked whether I could use the demo pieces until then and whether i could get a further discount. To my surprise, they agreed for a Rs1000 discount while also allowing me to take the demo speakers with me (until I got they get the new ones). The total cost was hence 12.5K ;-)

The speakers did not fit into the boot of my car so I had to place them in the back seat of my Optra. Got home and hooked it up to my Astonia. I first hooked the audio from my media player to the Astonia and heard some old Hindi songs, then some master piece collections from Beethoven, Mozart and the sort, Hotel California (my favourite while auditioning audio systems). I was very happy with the richness of the sound.

I then connected the TV Audio out to the Astonia. The media player, HTiB and Airtel HD setup box were all connected over HDMI to teh TV and teh XBox360 over plain RCB. I set my TV to use external speakers and then played battleship on my Philips HTiB. I switched off the Amp and listened to a couple of scenes (one conversation and one action scene) on my HTiB speakers, and then I muted the HTiB and switched on the Amp and played the same two scenes. I couldn't believe my ears but both scenes sounded much better on the yamaha speakers than on my HTiB. I had expected the action scenes to atleast sound better in the surround system but it was not so! I was now very happy with my purchase.

Since then I have been listening to the Astonia+Yamaha for over a week now and have been even more impressed than on the first day. While watching Mad Men (Media Player), I could hear background sounds (office, traffic) that I had never heard until now, I even went back to older episodes to confirm the same. My wife too made the same observation, so its not just me! One can't make out too much difference while watching something from Airtel DTH but the TV shows that I have downloaded on my media player surely sound much better now - more background details and the voice too is much more clearer. We used to turn on subtitles for some serials like Boardwalk Empire - no longer needed now!

Anyway, my biggest complaint with the Astonia+Yamaha system is the lack of remote for controlling volume while using Airtel as the source. I can use the media player remote to control the volume while using it as a source, but on the Airtel set top box, the volume cannot be changed using the Airtel remote or the TV remote - operation not allowed.

They took back the old speakers and delivered the new speakers today evening. I will hook them up later today!

PS. I am running out of time so could not write more details about the specific songs and movie clips that I listened to, also sorry for typos, if any.

Hi guys,

Yesterday I recieved my Astonia SC300 Amp which I will be using with my MA BR1 Bookshelf.

Background: I am comparatively new to the hifiworld and wanted to experience something. Basically I was looking for a great sounding home theatre system in a budget (60 to 70K) for my new home which is delayed for a couple of months. After reading a lot of threads in this forum and audition of various home theatre systems, I got interested in a budget stereo set up as well however if I look at the prevailing hifi market minimum cost would have been around 50K which I did not want to spend on a stereo system.

However since I wanted to buy my HT system only when I get the possesion of my new home so that I could plan my living room and do not stuck with the visible wirings or unplanned interiors, I deffered that.

Initial impressions of the Amp: Sound is room filling, broad with crisp highs and great lows. A little volume is sufficient to fill the room with sound which is great. Even in higher volumes I did not notice any distortion. I used a basic philips dvd player as source still sound quality for my novice ears were great. However aesthetics of the amp is not upto the mark. For example Knobs for controlling volume, bass, treble and balance were of poor quality. Fittings also seem like somebody has assembled it by taking different parts and somehow managed to put it in place. one can see one side of the knob is touching the body while gap is visible in the other side.

Since I benefitted a lot form this forum I would be happy to answer if anybody have any questions regarding this.

Thanks a lot.

hi Vinay... how much it costed you and from where you purchased the same

cld you pls suggest some comparable options in terms of price/SQ, further any idea on how SC300 compares with Norge 2060 or say 2030 in terms of SQ (with BS & mediaplayer as source - still undecided).

its baby step for me in this hemisphere ... hence any input would be much appreciated. thanks in advance

I don't know about Norge 2060 capbilities but my Astonia easily driving Polk Tsi 300 and I am quite satisfied with its performance, sound is detailed enough for its price tag.

Astonia is a powerful amp and I get room filling quality sound even in lessor volume with my MA BR1 speakers hence quite sure that it can drive floorstanders easily.

However it has only two inputs and one output. Also, I badly miss the remote to control the input source and volume level .
