Hi all,

I have connected PS3 to denon1612 via HDMI

Audio output for games that i am getting is not "Dolby digital". AVR displays "Multi in"
Shouldn't AVR be displaying "Dolby Digital", if all the games are in DD format

Only for one game, AVR displays "Dolby digital", while for rest of 5-6 games that i have, it shows "Multi in"

What could be the issue?

Thanks in advance

If you are getting multi-in display, then the decoding is done by the player. Check in your player audio settings for dolby and dts bitstream option.

Audio settings in PS3 - selected HDMI as option
Can't find any other setting for audio in PS3
Nonetheless will check again

There are 2 types of Audio OUT settings I have come across on my BD player and HT system...
PCM
BitStream

I guess you would have chosen 'PCM' in audio settings, hence it's showing "PCM MultiChannel or Multi in" as you said.
Try selecting 'BitStream' and see the difference.

I changed the setting of Audio output format (HDMI) to Bitstream from Linear PCM.
But still output is the same. AVR displays only "Multi in"

Finally managed to configure the settings. In PS3 (sound settings), manually switched off all other outputs except DD/DTS/LPCM 2 and AVR displayed "DD".
But LPCM 5.1 sound was much better than DD.
Did some research and found that LPCM is a lossless audio while DD is not

Which PS3 do you have? The "Fatty" cannot bitstream HD audio codecs (HDMI board limitation). The (relatively) newer PS3 "Slim" CAN bitstream HD audio codecs, in which case you will see the audio codec's name on your AVR i.e. DTS-HD MA or Dolby TruHD.

If you select LPCM, the PS3 will decode the audio and send it to your AVR. Bitstream sends the audio undecoded, so the AVR decodes the audio.

EDIT: If you're talking about games, the setting might be somewhere in the game menus. I remember, in the Uncharted series, we can manually select (in-game) what audio output we want, the options being: LPCM 7.1, LPCM 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1

Doesn't make too much of difference in the end.

I have new slim PS3. I did get DD sound for games after i manually deselected Linear PCM 5.1 option under audio settings.

For unchartered, i also found same options as u mentioned in-game, but for others there was no such option.

But finally at the end, I like PCM sound way better than DD. I checked it only for one game. But with DD lot of sounds are missing, which is not the case with PCM5.1

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
