Audiophile HTPC

Here's the link for Sethiainfotech online store. Shipping is free all over Tamil Nadu.

Cabinet Casings - Computer Hardware Buy,Sethia, Sethia Infotech, Chennai, India...

They seem to be a bit excessively pricey. I'm saying this solely on the basis of the listed price of the Silverstone LC10 Cabinet.

Sethiainfotech: Price = 9735/-

theitdepot: Price = 7160/- (you should add at least 300/- to this to account for shipping and payment processing if you pay through a credit card)

Prime ABGB: Price = 6500/- (No idea if anything other than shipping charges need to be added -- haven't bought from them yet).

That is a BIG difference.

Hydra,

Agree with you on the pricing part. Let me check their prices in person.

Thanks

Think these ,
- Nice large PC running with lil noise, has graphics card has xonar etc card , plays music
or
- SFF pc with good soundcard and fanless PSU ,playing music

Here's the list of components suggested by my supplier / assembler.

1. Intel I5 Processor 650 With H55tc Motherboard

2. Creative Xfi Titanium Sound Card

3. Asus Blueray Drive

4. Corsair 8gb Ram ( 4x 2)

5. Corsair 500 Watts Smps

6. Seagate 2 Tb Hdd ( 2 X 1 Tb)

Any suggestions pl? Does this have on-board graphics capability? I am open to changes in the config if its going to better the final product.

This will be used only for playing music and an occasional BD (of course in
2 channel mode).

The graphics chip is terrible on that board. You'd need a separate graphics card if you intend to do anything other than browsing.

Also that sound card is rubbish for high end audio. Its a gaming sound card. I'd not recommend it.

Thanks for informing me about the sound card. Can you suggest a better one please. Or should I first buy something with on-board audio and video capabilities and later on add dedicated sound and video cards, if I don't like the inbuilt ones?

Shailender, since you are already buying an Emotiva DAC, you really don't need to get a Sound Card now.

If you still want to buy a Sound Card, you can look at the Asus Xonar series (there are 4 cards you can choose from) or the ESI Juli@. I use an Asus Xonar Essence STX and I'm pretty happy with it.

P183 is hands down the best case for a quiet pc. No two ways about it :-).
And I'm still not satisfied!

Thanks, guys, for the various supplier details. I bought my P183 + PSU over-the-counter at IT Depot, as I live nearby. They didn't have it in the shop, but I ordered it in the morning, with deposit, and picked it up in the evening, so no delivery charges.

I really wonder about using W7! Whilst my personal decision is that XP is the end of the MS road for me, I've heard people say that it is still the MS OS of choice for dedicated media machines.

Remember... playing music satisfactorily (even excellently!) is something that a 486, with a good sound card, could do. High-performance, current-consuming, heat-producing, purse-emptying components not needed!

In fact, my best music-playing and most-problem-free music machines was three computers ago: a P5. I very much regret having given it away!

Thank you. Noted down the models. Will inform the supplier to look for them.

Yes, I'll be getting my Emotiva UPA-2 and XDA-1 during first week of July.

In view of my getting Emotiva, you think I should go with a simple on-board audio and video card?

Yup for music playback, nothing beats winxp with an asio driver even now.

For video or home theater applications, Windows 7 is the way to go if one wants the best image quality, hardware video acceleration and lossless audio pass through to a receiver.

Dude, i think you were the only person who used a P5 machine:D (Weren't you referring to processors?)

The P5 is not an imaginary cpu after the P4.

There was an older core called P5 in the 200 - 400mhz range ...

If that confuses you - P5 is the name of the core not the cpu. And CPU is not Communist Party of Uttarkhand. ;)
