It look like Audyssey does not like Subwoofer sound. When I try to do Audyssey setup with its six listening position setup, all settings happen perfectly but it make changes to many of the speaker configuration parameters automatically which I don't like

1. It makes Fronts as Large: Due to which low frequency pass at Subwoofer reduces significantly and all bass produced from floor standing fronts.
2. It makes Subwoofer present as No.
3. It makes speaker crossover frequency to 40Hz. Which I do not like. I setup LFE+Main frequency at 120Hz and Speaker crossovers at 120 Hz then my DIY subwoofer makes really good thump. From all speakers freq 120Hz and below passing to sub.
4. It reduces the gain of speakers significantly, which I do not like.

I have pretty powerful floor standers Heco Victa 700 in which freq range starts from 28Hz onwards. It has two woofers in it.

When I override settings above it disables the Audyssey EQ and features..

Did any of you faced similar situation while setting up Audyssey? Many of the users vouch for it, but I don't.

I have 1612 with the same set of speakers like you with the JBL 250, the speakers sound a lot more powerful if I just use front+center+sub, the moment I setup with the 5.1 with the rear speakers, the speakers become very feeble. Not sure whether the AMP is under-powered to drive the whole set. I thought it was my perception, I could have been biased.
The sub-woofer is not an issue for me though.

Try the 70Hz/80Hz and tweak from there.
Are there 2 subs for the Heco, or are those woofers?

Sorry, this was typo. It was woofers not subwoofers. Yes, tweaking I can do but it again it means Audissey is useless for me. When I tweak it disables Audyssey settings.

May be you try gain setting of individual speakers. It will give you adequate output.

I also observed this as I need to keep my volume near -10dB to get adequate output.

Guys,
Are we concluding that Audyssey and 1612 are not suitably powered to get the best our from these speakers.
Please share further details. May I suggest you to try Nad or 1912 and see if performance improves.

The problem here is that audessey sees the front speakers as large or full range and so will not use subwoofer for low frequency effect. This will be the same with denon 1912 also.

Then why the hell Denon included Audyssey into Denon 1612 and 1912? Just for marketing gimmicks.

OR. Audyssey assumes that with these AVRs we should use satellite speakers for HT :(.

Disabling Subwoofer doesn't make sense. What about the sound coming/encoded in LFE channel of 5.1 audio? AVR will redirect it to Fronts ?

When the crossover is selected at 40Hz, frequency below that should be sent to SW.

I think the audyssey mic is not sensing the sound from subwoofer properly. Hence it may be thinking that there is no SW. You may increase the gain on the subwoofer and check again.

In my Onkyo 707, I can modify the crossover settings and it is not disabling Audyssey EQ. Default Audyssey output maynot be perfect for the like of the user. We will have to tweak it to suit our requirements.

Possibly other Denon 1612 users can respond whether EQ is getting disabled while modifying the settings.

All room correction \ speaker setup apps rely on the frequency test and calculates the parameters based on the receiving frequency thru' the supplied mic. A simple trick is to disconnect the speaker plate at the speaker terminals and connect the speaker wire to the mid-tweeter terminal to make audyssey think it as a small speaker and do the rest of the settings. Once the setup is finished, connect the terminal plates back.

When you run the Audyssey there is no check available for sub. It only check and plays test-tone in 5 speakers. I double verified this. May be some other users can confirm.

Do the above trick and see whether the sub is getting detected. I think it was because the speakers were getting detected as FR.

Hi

I have a Denon 1611 which detects subwoofer and front tower speakers without any problem and sets up accordingly. First check you subwoofer connection properly and the try.

Regards

Check the test tone produced by the AVR in the speaker configuration setup. Hope you got that option in your AVR, where you can produce a pink noise and set the level of the speaker manually. In that section there is an option to produce sound from Subwoofer and set the level of subwoofer.

Check whether the test tone is coming through subwoofer.

If test tone is not coming, check the subwoofer connections.

Are you hearing anything from subwoofer while playing music or movies?

Audyssey indeed got a tone for subwoofer.

In my case, Audyssey check for all speakers in the first measurement (it takes minimum 3 positions and maximum of 6 positions). Even though I don't have front wide speakers it checks in the first round. If not detected it won't show in the next round and won't send any tone for those speakers.

In your case it look like Audyssey tone is not coming out of subwoofer, hence it is marking it as NO SW

I suggest you to reset the microprocessor and then try the auto setup from scratch. For resetting the avr, power off the avr using on/standby button of avr. Then press on/standby button while pressing the prev and next buttons simultaneously. Wait until the avr display flashes at intervals of 1 second. Then avr will prompt you for auto setup.

I increased the gain on each of the speaker channels to get a modest boost in amplification on the AVR1612. Still I feel some how this amp is not producing the levels as per the specs. I am using the Wharfedale Obesidion HT Speaker Set with Diamond 10SX sub. Any other tips will be highly appreciated.

Ideally all these digitized settings dont really help with the quality of sound. Try setting everything manually according to your own preference and tweak around the settings more to find a balance. The EQ is only to compensate for a shortcoming, unless you prefer EQ modified sound.

If done correctly Audyssey enhances the overal audio and takes it to another level. Might take a while to tweak it, but its not an impossible task. Suggest you to follow the below exactly the way it is described...........I am sure it will put all your queries / speculation to rest.

all the best!!!

Thanks Aakashr
That was good reading. Hope I get the sound sweet at some stage.....(till then I will listen to my Audio/ Music on the Fatman & keep this for movies)
