Auto transformers vs. Isolation Transformers

Hi,

I checked with Maxine and another Mumbai based company called Argo Transformers for a 1.5 KVA 220V to 110V step-down transformer.

The prices of auto-transformers with both were around 3.5K to 4.5K INR. However, isolation transformers (from both) were priced at around 10K to 12K INR.

Now I understand that Isolation transformers are the safest in that they protect the equipment in case of transformer failure. But That's a steep price for a transformer!

The person I spoke to, at Maxine told me that for normal home-use electronic equipments, even the auto-transformers have adequate fail-safes built in to protect against equipment failure.

Any thoughts on this? Anybody who uses auto-transformers? Anybody who has faced a failure scenario with an auto-transformer?

Hi Tanmayj,

I had recently purchased an isolation step down transformer 1.5KVA 220 to 120 Volts for INR 5500 (All inclusive)...Delivery at Bangalore with 1 Yr Warranty.

I researched for almost 2 months on this topic and finally chose this guy as it seemed genuine at an affordable cost. He explained and showed me the interior circuit design on the difference between the auto and isolation types.

I visited the factory where this is manufactured and had a first hand look of the making of this transformer. The person custom made it for me as per my requirement. No of output sockets (3), A fuse in the transformer (2 Spare fuses), A Voltmeter and a Switch to show input and output voltage, Two Indicator (Red Colour as shown below) for input and output voltage. A Trip switch in case of an over voltage occurs at the input side.....he cud manage all at that price.

Do PM me incase you need his contacts. Here is how it looked. (Again on 3ds max..based on which the guy made it for me)

And since there are basically NO Moving parts and basically No electronics inside (Only few electrical coils), they are very durable and lasts as long as u don't overload it.

Cool Shreejith, Thanks.

But I finally procured an amp not from US, but from a territory which is on our own voltage.

So I dont need one right now...
