I am in the market for a 5.1 setup with budget of 3Lac aprx.

Pls Guide me which brands or models to consider.

I had auditioned Totem, B&W, Q Acoustic, PSB, Dali, Golden Ear

From the above list I like Q acoustic(Savings of 75k 2.25lac), B&W(Bang On budget 3.1 lac), Golden Ear(Overshooting my budget 3++).

Totem arow- I enjoyed the music but in Movies dialogue delivery felt very shallow no punch in voice.

Dali zensor 5- I found it to be -OK not very exciting

Q acoustic 3050- I liked the sound Clear and sharp . After listening to its Price I was excited too

B&W 684 - was a good punchy performer with Clear & sharp sound.

Golden ear - It was great . HUgeee sound stage and very punchy towers

Hi I'm no audiophile but I can share my limited knowledge with you. I've a CM9 theatre from B&W so definitely I like this brand more out of all the brands that you've listed above. When I bought my system a couple of years ago, I loved the 6xx series from B&W. So much so that I convinced a friend to buy it for his theatre. I feel both these series of products to be just the right mix for both music and movies. So I definitely feel that you can't go wrong with the 600 series. I personally could stretch out a bit more then and did definitely compare both series A to B so could hear improvements in the CM series. So I went ahead and purchased that. Till date, I couldn't have been happier with my decision.

Over the years I've also come to hear about Goldenear whose actual product demo is yet to happen. I would love to audition them but just don't know when it would happen. Which specific GE product did you listen and how much does it cost?

Which amp are you planning with them btw?

Hi

With that kind of budget, there are decent systems available which would fulfill your requirements in terms of performance, appearance etc.

Since you are based in Mumbai, we have ample dealers who are always ready to provide an audition.....

Bottom line is trust your ears and decide on speakers which have better warranty / after sales service,

IMHO, I would trip on B&Ws.

All the best

Hi.
Don't know about the rest but B&Ws are great for movies. However what amplifier do you intend to use? They do like a quality and relatively high powered amplifier to sound optimum. Good luck!

Yes,CM9 are much better than B&W 600 series. But 600 are above other similar budget speakers in terms of sound.
They need good power though.

If you are in Mumbai I can guide you to the Golden ear dealer for audition and probably accompany you as well. I auditioned Triton 2 Mrp 2.2lac

Amp may be Onkyo Nr 646 havent really decided upon.. Some one told me Yamaha AMPS provide power as per their specification and other brands power output may be a little less than specified.

Eg: Denon 110 Rms may actually give an output of 90 Rms
But Yamaha 110 Rms will give 105 Rms
Not sure if its true

For Home Theater I wouldn't buy B&W or Q Qccoustics. B&W 6 series is plain bad.Paradigm Monitor 11/9 is a better buy over B&W 6 series. Q Qccoustics excellent for music but touch polite for movies. My two cents here would be Polk RTi A9 ,Polk DSW660Pro Sub and Polk RTi Surrounds and Center. It's bang for the buck. Polk RTiA9 are good with music too.
A little or lit more finesse would be Tannoy XT6F 5.1 package. This is money well spent in every way even if it exceeds your budget a bit.
Then theres Cabasse Java Caberra Minorca and a Sub from Velodyne Avery exciting system with superb sonics.

In the models you have listed, I had personally auditioned the Qacoustics, Dali and the B&W. I was in the similar dilemma as you are in, the Qacoustics really surprised me, I never expected them to sound that good for the asking price, like you mentioned I observed the same with Dali Zensor was boring. B&W was never in my budget, thankfully I made the right choice in getting them. Though mine is a 2 ch setup, I absolutely love the 683's for movies more than their musicality. If your planning on the B&W, I dont think the ONKYO you're eyeing would do justice, probably the Anthem, Rotel or high end Yamaha/Denon. If you don't have the budget to get it all, take it step by step, but get what compliments each other. I would say spend initially on a good amp(remember power specs of most AVR's are misguiding), front & center speakers. The sub and rears can be added later.

I've heard the Paradigm Studio series(now discontinued) and they have a very wide sound stage and would suit movies, they seem to be a bit more on the bright side. As for the Polks, they are best suited for people who like more bass, I was never impressed with them. But do audition them all and make your decision. 3L for the speaker package is a good budget and you'll have plenty of options to spoil yourself.

Good luck with your search,
Regards,
Kannan

Unfortunately I am based out of Ludhiana, Punjab. So I am not so lucky when it comes to be able to audition and admire new gear as and when it comes out. We have rather limited options here.

IIRC the founder of GE is the same person behind Polk Audio and Definitive tech, and given that I have auditioned and admired them (both PA and DT) in the past, my assumptions are that GE should be equally nice, if not better.

OT for some time now, I have been contemplating to shift my B&W's to a dedicated home theatre room which I have plan and build as of now. If I do that in the near future, then I might compare the B&W MT50/60D vs GE Supersat series in order to get smaller satellite speakers for my bedroom since Floorstanders do take a lot of real estate.

When I auditioned a ton of speakers like I mentioned earlier, I was able to do that on AVMAX expo in Delhi. At that time, I liked the following speakers in this order, amongst different price points of course:

B&W CM9
Sonus Faber Venere
B&W 600 series
Dali Ikon series (I really liked it and the dealer Top Gizmos was a nice chap too, if I wasn't too set on the B&W's, I would have got the Dalis)
Deftechs (forgot the series name sorry)
Polk Rti series (extra bass if you like it, better bang for the buck too)

Now these are all at various price levels but just wanted to share my thoughts on various speakers/brands at that point and time. I could be different but I personally found Paradigm to be on the brighter side. IMO you should have a listen of the Dalis too, you might like them. [emoji4]

Yesterday I auditioned B&W 684 & Q acoustic 3050

I liked the Q acoustic , I found it to be more open and had a good midrange.
I think Q acoustic gives B&W a run for the money.
My view would be the same even if they were at same price point.

(On demo was 683 not the 684 actually)

My personal opinion is B&W 6 series is plain rip off for the money they come now. There are excellent speakers that can be bought at 683 money. The 683 bass is its major weakpoint. The QAccoustic 3050 or Mission MX5 easily annihilates the overhyped B&W in every department at half the money.

Re: B&W VS Q Acoustic

If you can, try usher v602 once. I heard them alongside q acoustics 3050. I think the ushers are a bit costlier than Q's (around 10k). But that extra amount is purely justified IMHO.

It's needless to say that I liked v602 very much over 3050. IMHO. YMMV.

One more thing. Try them with stereo amps and not AVRs.
