Batery powered DIY CNC phono stage

Thanks Reuben yes I went ahead with the r-core rather than the battery powered as I wanted it be fixed and lying at one place rather than opening it up everytime to change the battery. Also an underlying thinking of getting the Pass B1 built with the same r-core also made me swing towards the dedicated power supply and sorry to update you that I got hold of a vintage Marantz ST40 series stereo tuner from a FM recently and more details on PM.

Another CNC build. Built by my friend Ryan. It was a pleasure teaching him the ropes of putting together a circuit. He was an enthusiastic learner. He has mastered the art of soldering.

Fully wired, fired it up and it sang without a hitch on first try:

Resistive loading of 62 kOhms sounded better to our ears for the brand new Shure M97xE cartridge. Turntable is Technics SL 1300. It had a slightly fidgety speed adjustment issue and took me lots of time and whole lot of patience to get the speed right, before it settled to a rhythm.

The rear showing the connectors: all RCA female cabinet mounts for ins and outs and speaker binding post (for ground) are gold-plated MX. Dual 12V sockets are from Champion Rubber. Two 12V switched mode adapters are MX too (model SPS-01, 1 Amp/12V).

If that looks familiar, that's because we butchered a perfectly working but no longer used Airtel DTH set top box and modified the existing port holes to suit our needs.

Sachu, I am going to initiate a CNC build for my good friend, FM JK_Chaos. Have the following queries:

1) Would it be good to take the bread board approach, separate boards for each channel?
2) How about 2 OP-amps per channel instead of the combo one?

Any thoughts?

Re: Battery powered DIY CNC phono stage

I think original design is good enough and 2 opamp per channel will not make any difference. PCB design is also very good. I recommend using original PCB.

Another question Sachu, I plan to use jumper settings (like the ones on PC mother boards) instead of the dip-switch. Any thoughts on this?

I am sorry.I have never seen a computer motherboard. Can you post a pic for those jumpers?

Regards,
Sachin

Here you go, I can use 4 sets of these pins for each channel. The jumper can be slipped on as appropriate making contact.

I intend to solder the jumper pins to the PCB. Planning to use a bread board for the DIY feel.

The contacts of a sealed dip switch are probably more immune
to dust/humidity etc, compared to the open jumpers. It's a low level analog
signal going through them, rather than a binary (0 , 5V or 3.3V typically)
logic level seen in a digital board.

The CNC board and kit is cheap enough. A bread board approach may not bring much savings. But if you want to take the hard core route, that's another story.

Also, the performance figures and noise figures of a dual opamp won't be any inferior to the single version.

Thanks Joshua, the approach is not in relation to keeping costs low but to try something radically different with locally available components.

On another note, has anyone noted or reported cross-talk with the dual op-amps?

Few days back I made CNC Phonostage to Fm dranil's friend. He stays at Dubai. He told me to post a small review on behalf of him.
He sent me a below mail

"hello dear Sachin
every thing is perfect. just got finished wiring , here are few photos , I like the way it is sounding ......just marvellous..............
now im able to increase volume up to 3 oclock position , and it was never been the case before , with my creek OBH 15 it was not possible to increase due to sharpness, but this one is fentastic. very silent .......no hum ......no resonance ...this is what I wanted always. Thanks for all support.
As you said earlier my grado works only with MM .......doesn't take MC input , now for MC input i have to buy one cart with .48mV Pls. suggest one brand MC cart should be inexpensive ,
MM input with ortofone MONO cart works much better than any MC I have ever heard,,,,,,,,
Thanks again . keep in touch. you may post it on Audiokarma if you wish , I tried many times to logg in after registration but couldn't..
cheers manu"
His system is :
TT micro seiki BL 21 .
SME 3009 Tonearm for stereo MC
and one pioneer vintage Toneram for ortofon MONO MM.
His other Phonostage is Creek OBH15

Yes, Sachin really deserves the title "GURU".

Both in the sense that he is knowledgeable as well as he shares the knowledge. He is a thorough gentleman, very kind and helpful.

Many so called 'GURUS' are very miserly with their 'knowledge', and they are only interested in extracting from others. One such person once gave me ( i had asked for it) a little amount of local made 'contact cleaner' after carefully removing the label from the can.

People will be people.

I would like to refer to a famous quote " Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".
Sachin does a lot for this wonderful forum.

And so is Sachin, though I have never met him, but keep on talking to him over the phone, and he answers with the same level of energy and passion always, it feels great to interact with him, and yes as I call him, he is a moving database of all the things related to TT's, Tonearms, Carts and Phono stages. You are special Sachin!

+1, even I met him briefly on highway. But accomplished GB worth of Rs 100K during Pass F5 turbo Amp build. Highlighted text in bold.
