I have an Accuphase CDP 600 connected to an Accuphase 450 amplifier. i have the amp connected to Morel bookshelf speakers. i want to upgrade the speakers to a better bookshelf. i listen to mostly vocals hence want a speaker that brings out the mids and highs clearly. any suggestions?

JM Labs Focal Electra bookshelf, has great synergy with Accuphase gear and i have personally heard this great sounding combo.

Have heard ATC SCM 19 and 11 with accuphase gear and they sounded superb....should be better than Morel .... However do let me know when you want to upgrade your amp and cdp :D

Would go with Harbeth Monitor 30 or the ATC SCM50 Passive. Both play to the strengths of Accuphase. Would also recommend the Auditorium 23 speaker cables with them

Hi dinkyboy,
Member 'dinyaar' of our forum runs an Accuphase amp and an Accuphase CDP (probably the same amp you have, CDP model not quite sure). I have heard that amp at his place with B&W 800 series bookshelf before he upgraded his CDP to an Accuphase. Lovely amp indeed. For some time in the middle dinyaar got Theils, and he loved that sound. Finally he settled for a pair of Avalon speakers. I do not quite remember the exact model of Avalon. My impression is he is more than happy. Dinyaar lives also in Mumbai. I think you should try to contact him. Knowing dinyaar, he must have tried all things possible before he finally decided in favor of the Avalons.

Regards.

but, asit,

the avalon ascendants are not bookshelf speakers - they are (superlative) floorstanders.

I agree with Asit above. Your CDP/Amp are of really hight quality and deserve a very good speaker. and this quality deserves a well researched speaker !
In fact the easiest thing in the world is to give a recommendation for this speaker :) But the most difficult is to describe how it will sound like !
try to speak to people who have heard this combo and understand what was good and try to match it with your expectation of sound/Budget.
Please try to google out people who own an all accuphase gear and try to contact them...most audiophiles are very very helpful in giving info.

Also, you should post your question in the Audiogon Forums as well as Audio Asylum forums..will give you a much more broader view.

my recomendation is to go for a very revealing speaker as the quality of electronics will only enhance it, no need to go for a speaker which "hides" the electronics. the first brand which comes across is of course ATC as suggested by Prem. others are Thiel, PMC,B&W... for the harbeth the Monitor Series (as mentioned by Prem) would be a good fit

shershah-ji,
More than getting a particular speaker, my suggestion to OP was to contact one man who, I know, has Accuphase amp+CDP combo, as has been correctly interpreted by arj above.

Regards.

Hi Dinkiboy,

Superlative CD machine and good amp and I always wondered when U would get the urge to change the speaker!!!!
When U came over I had the Sim CDP with my Accuphase E 450 driving the Avalon Ascendants. Now I have the Esoteric XO 5 which I preferred in my home to the DP 400 / 500 and the E450 is replaced by the Accuphase Pre /Power C2110 / 4100.
I also had bought another 450 for my uncle to drive the Thiel Cs2.4. Then changed it to the E460 and believe me the change is dramatic. Cannot say that the 450 is bad, far from it but the 460 is simply stunning as an integrated amp. Back to Mosfets in the integrateds for accuphase and the amp sounds delicate, articulate, controlled and all that U expect BUT WITH LESS BLOOM than the 450.
Maybe with the Morel U need that 'extra full bodied' sound but I would still suggest a listen of the 460.
Now regarding the speaker :- I thought Grattan mentioned that u are keen on the Thiel CS 3.7. That speaker will thrill u for sure and so will the 2.4. Yes some of the Spendor, Harbeth , ATC, Pro Ac book shelves will work but I am not sure that they will totally satisfy plus the fact that all these or most of them are not a handy audition in Bbay so to an extent its a blind buy!!!

Am sure U too are coming to Boomarang for the week end get together. He has the Accuphase 460 with the new 510 cdp and the Esoteric , Sims , Brystons, Arcams etc along with the Fat Lady , Avalon Indras , Thiels speakers and am sure U will find the sound signature U are after. Once that is ascertained U may be able to find a Book shelf that comes relatively close.

I am totally thrilled with the Current combo. No bass overhang that I suffered with the 450 as the Power amp is simply stunning. I have experimented with different thicknesses of 'masks' on the ascendant to get a different response and all I can say is I doubt I am getting out of Avalon in a hurry!!! Maybe an Indra at the max but if not the Ascendant is good.

Maybe U could come over again & hear this set up or I could take you over to friends who have Wilsons or the Sonus or the B&Ws. Incidently I heard the much spoken for 805 Diamond Stand mount and honestly I would not pay the steep price for what it offers.

Lastly tons of 'high end' stand mounts come with huge, ugly , heavy stands as seen from the picture in Unleash 's post and if one can accomodate that & get the wife to accept it , a floor stander may be the better option in most cases!!!!! For ur tastes I think the Thiel 3.7 will work wonders.

Rgds

5th and 6th March is audition and preview day at Boomarang (Juhu) for a lot of new stuff including the E460's and Indra's.
Wish I was living in Mumbai :)

dinkyboy,
i'd second Dinyaar's recommendation as well! I have owned the Thiel CS2.4's and they are unbelievably good!
try and do an audition at boomerang with your amp.

Only bookshelves please as i do not have space for a floorstander. Budget...........not a constraint but value for money is. i wont pay 2x the money for a 2% increase in sound quality.

where can i demo the ATC in mumbai? why has no one recomended the dynaudio C1

why has no one recomended the dynaudio C1

Unless you are planning to import from overseas, the dynaudio c1 has atrocious pricing in India (read almost double of US retail) and is a terrible value for money, though it is a superb speaker.
Some of the speakers I have been considering for my own upgrade (Book shelf only):

1. Proac D2
2. ATC SCM19
3. Focal electra be1008
4. B&W 805 diamond
5. Dynaudio C1
6. Harbeth Shl5
7.Paradigm signature s2

In this list the first three have a somewhat decent price, compared to international pricing, the 4th & 5th are almost 100% over the international pricing, the 6th is not available in India and has to be imported (so no audition unless you travel abroad), the 7th I am not too sure.

Cheers
Sid

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
