How much for this Manu? Sandeep from Audire told me they stopped dealing in Hsu. So where to get it locally?

SVS does not have speaker level inputs... not the budget one at least.

BK elec .... someone on this site also mentioned they do oem for rel/mj acoustics, they might have a model close to your budget with the musicality but you will need to import from u.k as they are an internet direct brand.

I tried borderlinx online calculator - the shipping for a $500 sub was coming to $600. I tried calling Shine Cargo - they said they only do corporates not individual requirements for shopping.

Any other shipper I can try?

I'd be very interested to know who this is. Anyone else got a clue? (Including the actual OEM gentleman!):)

try using Parcel2go.com. also ask BKelec directly..they may have a special rate/contract.

i have the Gemini..use it for my HT (used it for Music duties much earlier) it is a sealed box and very similiar to the MJ acoustics 150 (below) and recommended for smaller rooms/Music setups

If i were you, i might just stretch a bit and get the XLS200

Edit: Oh! the budget - 25K approx. (the REL is +1.5x times that price). @25K my pajamas will stay at my waist. Else the loosen'd Naada .. er purse strings will have unimaginable consequences. ;)

A sub is heavy and with the packaging, is quite bulky and really expensive to ship. There area many options in the 600 to 700 USD range but the shipping is prohibitive, so I am looking at locally available options only.

Has anyone reviewed the Wharfedale SW250? or the SPC 10 or 12? Wharfedale seems to have taken to sealed subs big time. Does anyone have details of pricing / availability?

Sometimes a jaded person like me can be surprised. Right now I am listening to a borrowed Wharfedale Power cube 12+ which has dual ports and the ease with which it has integrated with my back loaded horns is amazing. Plenty of clean bass just a slight boominess but not really distracting, right now enjoying the balanced sound.

What drivers are these in the horns if I may ask?

So you believe an SW150 can also do the trick? Will head to the WF showroom and give it a listen. I hope they have high level inputs.

Fostex FE206 in FE208 horn cabinets. SW150 is ported IIRC, the designs are sealed SW250 and up as well as the SPC10 and 12. They all have highlevel inputs. I prefer running the sub off a second pair of outputs from the pre.

the one issue that I have seems to be with the input impedance of the sub, it is just 10k ohms whereas my pre has an output impedance of 3k ohms - the ideal ratio should be atleast 1:10. I noticed that I had to turn up the gain on the pre to get a good signal transfer. I solved this by lowering the gain on the power amps that drive the horns and turning up the gain on the preamp. Nothing to beat a good preamp for impedance matching, especially one that has dual outputs!

I also found that taking the low level output from the sub to the power amp is usually a bad idea as the sub usually has a pretty high output impedance - the signal transfer to the power amp is not efficient.

What has been your experience with high level inputs? Personally I would be vary of the putting the high level signal through an extra crossover.

The REL has an Zin of 100K therefore I have confidence that it will not alter the load/impedance characteristics on a 6 to 8W tube amp when using speaker level input into the sub. Isn't 3Kohms kinda high for Zout?

What pre amd power combo are you using?

This will be my first sub, so I can't tell about any experience. With speaker level inputs I wouldn't be using any crossover'ed signals on my FR except for the sub's using its own low pass filter using a 12dB/octave slope.

The pre is an audio note M zero, which is well known to have a higher than usual output impedance for a tube preamp. The power amps are 6L6 based Chinese Dareds, these have gain controls which can be useful sometime

How much does the REL cost?

Oh! I am getting a 6L6 powered Tube kit this week or later (its lying with customs).

The price of the REL is below 40K.

I am going the custom sub direction to go with my ESL Hybrid. Since I want to run both chains (b4 & after) by choice, the only option seems to go for an active x'over to feed the two requirements (in one of the chains). Mid and hi into my present amps to the ESL Hybrids and lo to the sub amp.

What can I say? Welcome to the fiddly world of tubes. What make of kit is this? 6L6 is a great sounding tube. I have had mine for close to 5 years now and for most of that time I have used them to drive the Klipsch RB51(forget the exact model number) and they were an awesome pairing - blues, jazz, hard rock all sounded great. I have spent a lot of time tube rolling. The best sounding 6l6 tubes have been the Electro harmonix. I have tried the winged C and Svetalana - both these have a slightly drier sound, the EH have a bit more richness and sustain. I havent tried much of NOS though, but they are in a different league. RCA 12AU7s in a CJ I owned made a difference of night and day over the factory installed tubes. Not sure which driver tube is in your design, but the best new production 12AX7 has been the JJ 803S - red print.

REL have made a name in subs, do you know who sells them in Bangalore?

Just another way of looking at it, what you need is a pre with two outputs, not necessarily an active cross over. I would imagine you are planning to run the ESL hybrids full range. However an active cross over is another way of getting there. Are you seeking an analog crossover such as the one Marchand sells in kit form or a digital one such as the DCX2496(that I had bought during the heyday of my open baffle experiments). Modelling the cross over even with something as flexible as the DCX2496 requires the patience of a saint.

Just my 2 cents but the pre with 2 outputs would give you greater flexiblity in setting the lowpass using the active-sub's cross over.

On a related note, going low is one thing, integrating with the mains for a smooth frequency response is another story. In my experience, I could get somewhere with massive amounts of room damping and the DEQ2496 which I use even now in my current system( I am a believer in room equalization). Placing the sub slightly forward in between main speakers seems to help with the integration as well.
