I am on the lookout for a BR player that excels in both video and audio. My taste for music/movies are 70:30. I am having a stereo setup at present. My budget is Rs.12K. Please suggest some region free BR player with CD/DVD compatibility with USB connectivity.

Sony BDP is not region free. Get Panasonic BDT220 if available. It can be made region free by updating the firmware and it has excellent PQ as per FM just4kix.

Hi Srini,

You are right that i am not frequenting HFV. 40 inches LED TV tops my wish list since 6 months. So, i could not be on spending spree. In fact, my Denon DCD510 CDP, even after service by Mr. Syed is skipping tracks and behaves as if he is illiterate now a days. Anyway, if the SENSEX touches a Benchmark, before Jan 2013, I can supplement my planned sony bravia. Thanks for your concern.

I would highly recommend the Pana DMP-BDT220. Available for around 11-12K and costing a further 2.5k for region free fw update. Is 3D, wireless built-in, plays almost all formats via USB, excellent PQ, very good upscaling (not at par with reference players such as Oppo although I have not seen Oppo myself), etc. The only problem? Not easily available in Indian stores.

Hi Baiju,

Thanks for the information. But you left me disappointed with the finishing sentence :-(

Did you check the region free capability by playing different region disks?

Since I dint have any Region A or B disks I could not check the compatibility.Today I got a B disk from a friend and checked,it was not playing.Informed supplier and he promised me to replace with correct one in a 4 days. I am confident he will fulfill his promise as he is very reliable. Some forum members p.m ed for his contacts. As soon as I get replacement I will p.m with details.

BD players are not region free. There are only a handful of players that can be made region free by end user. Indian dealers do not understand region free. They say anything. They are not cheating - they are plain misinformed. Your dealer cannot give you a "replacement" so to speak because the replacement may also be region locked. Best is to test it beforehand.

Unlike DVDP, the BDP is much more complex and the process of making it region free are more involved. There are two methods for making the BDP region free:

Option 1 - Hardware chip mod: Involves buying a hardware circuit/chip that has to be soldered to ride piggy-back on the main PCB. The mod is available from various sources and costs around 75~120 plus shipping (sometimes) and customs duty. Requires mid-level soldering skills. Best to be done by DIY experts or a technicial.
Advantages: Permanent. Protected from firmware updates. Region change can be done by original (factory) remote of the BDP.
Disadvantages: Cost. Requires soldering skills. Available for very few manufacturers/players.

Option 2 - Firmware update: Involves downloading a modified firmware. For Panasonic BDPs, firmware can be gotten via donation of 30 plus Paypal charges. Firmware update is easy - download, burn to CD-R, pop the CD-R in BDP and "Bob's your uncle". Toshiba BDX-3200KB is another model for which (free) firmware exists. Region change is via official (factory) BDP remote.
Advantages: Free for Toshiba and low cost for Panasonic. No expertise required other than downloading and buring a CD-R.
Disadvantages: Temporary - if firmware is updated (via official means), you will loose region free capability. Available for Panasonic BDPs (all) and Toshiba BDX-3200KB only (and maybe a few more sporadic models).

There is a third option. One can buy region free modded players from certain websites such as worldelectronics.com, 220-electronics.com, etc.
