blu ray

Is Dune BD Prime 3.0 a region free player?

Is it better than oppo?

It as got so many features. Dune BD Prime 3.0 HDI Dune

Yes Dune is a region free Blu Ray player. But its only better than Oppo as it is also a dedicated media player with a built in storage. But when you compare the upscaling capability of the Oppo then Dune has a lot of catching up to do, also Oppo is a Universal player so it plays SACD, DVD-A and Audio CD and that too very well.

If you are looking for a region free blu ray player as well as a media player then your search stops at Dune.

Jagdish, I think the comparison is a little unfair to both parties.

The Oppo BD-83 has been designed to be one of the best universal players and optimised for Blu-Ray and FullHD. It also has circuitry very similar to the Oppo 983H that allows the player to work as a CD Player. It has a high end video upscaling engine.

Dune started as a regular media player. It uses the same Sigma Designs circuitry as nearly every other player does. It has capabilities such as eSATA port, Ethernet 100/1000(*) Mbit/s, WiFi, and upcoming RF support. It can read ALL the files of a external drive and can use network functions such as SMB, UPnP, NFS, HTTP media streams, and FTP. In terms of Pros, the Dune has minimal upscaling features and cannot process HD Audio. It cannot play SACD or DVD-A discs.

The Oppo, on the other hand, has one of the best audio and video processing engines in the world at it's price point. It has limited network capabilities and can read external HDD only to a limited extent. It can process HD Audio and can send data in analogue format to external AVRs.

If you want a capable Universal cum Blu-Ray player, Oppo is hard to beat. Dune is a good media player. But in my mind, at least in India, it is too expensive at around 36K when you get media players using the same Sigma Designs circuitry at around 10K.

Cheers

Agree with venkat here . The usage of Oppo and Dune tend to be very different and so should be the expectations. Without going into the details of each of the players, I can say that you are not comparing them fairly.

Compare Dune to other media or networked A/V players as this seems to be a hot area now.

Oppo can be compared with more traditional CD, DVD and universal players.

When we compare only the PQ of a Blu-ray disc, between a budget BD player and a highend BD player, there seems to be hardly any difference. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

We compared Panasonic BD80 and Oppo BD83, didn't find any difference with the blu ray content at least to my eyes but with DVD upscaling Oppo performed slightly better.
