If you are playing downloaded stuff via internet, think of a media player (preferably with HDD) instead.

Buy a BDP for BD purposes.

yep u should go for a gud media player.....else u can go for panasonic bdt220.....
and if u want a combine media player and blu ray and have a gud budget go for dune.....

By looking at your requirement, there is no need for a Blu-ray Player and instead you should just go for a DVD player for playing DVD's & ACD's and a media player for your downloaded content (your many file formats).

If you are not investing on movies on Blu-ray's and only depending on downloaded media files then a Blu-ray player is of no use.

Consider Blu Ray player to future proof yourself. But, yes i agree with other, if you are not inclined to consider BD then no point in investing in BDP.

You can get best of both the world. But need to spend appropriate money.

Have you mentioned your budget?

There are HD Media Players that support BD-Drives too like popcorn hour, currently there is one such player in For Sale.

If you are not collector of movies and mostly use small to medium size files (read 700MB to 2GB), just look for some BD player that support maximum file format and that will suffice all your need.

Also check for BD player that support atleast NTFS format USB and external HDD.
Carry an external HDD/USB(NTFS formatted) with multiple file formats (both video and audio) at different bit rate to play and check before the purchase.

Thanks,

One basic doubt, can the HD media player plays DVD,CD e:rolleyes:tc?

HD media players cannot play optical media directly. There are two ways to play them.

1. Rip the CD/DVD and convert them to flac/wav/mp3 or DVD folders and share or copy the directory to play via the media player.
2. Share the CD/DVD drive on your computer and access the drive through (network) the media player (limited to a few).

In less than your budget, you can have one of the best...

Asus O!Play Gallery - It plays almost everything. USB 3.0 Port, Wireless 'N' networking
Add another 3-4K for a 1 or a 2TB HDD and you are all set.

But for that amount, you may consider a Blu-ray player with media handling capabilities.

Hi SaketB

Actually i decided on the Panasonic BDT 220, infact ishopinternational has sent the quote for about 8300 change. but then i saw this media player thread and got confused.

Do you feel i can go ahead with Panasonic BDT 220 and forget about media player. actually i dont need blueray player as of now, but thought by buying bdt220 i will be able to avoid any upgrade for next few years.

What do you say?
Regards

As I said in my previous post, for playing files, media player is better suited. For playback of physical media, consider a BDP. If considering a BDP, Panasonic BDT-DMP220 is highly recommended.

You can go for the BDT220 as a media player too and save some bucks. With an added drive which plays Blu-ray's, DVD's, ACD's its an added advantage. And its future proof as its 3D capable.
It has a USB port which supports upto 2TB HDD, which can be used for media playback of stored files.

But you need to be aware that only major audio/video formats will be able to play on this player. If you want or you intend to play numerous formats then a media player like the Asus O!Play Gallery is recommended.

Your Specifications on the file formats will help a lot.
If you want to play limited media files like mkv's, avi, dvix-codec, MP4 and light music - MP3/FLAC's, I would suggest you get a good Blu-Ray Player with HDD support(The Panny or the LG-BDP550) as it is sufficient. Also, be carefull with the region locking of your player.
Owning a media player might help if you have an enormous collection(in terms of file types and not size), otherwise a BDP will be future-proof.

Hello All,

Does the media players have their own HDD? What capacity can you get?
Can we also rip the BD to save in the Media player?

Not sure abt the Media player or BDP, as currently I use my Ext HDD to play downloaded movies on my LCD. But not all formats can be played. I also have a decent DVD collection around 200 titles.

Media players usually don't have HDD. You can add one later. Upto 2TB HDDs can be added easily. Some players have built -in bay for HDD while others support only external HDDs. You can rip BDs using PC in mkv or backup in ISO format which the media players will play. Go for media player as you are playing files from HDD. These players have more codec support than BDPs and TVs.

I use a Sony s490 blu ray player. Haven't had any problems playing back downloaded movie through a USB drive. No wifi though and I haven't connected it to a network

It is too tedious and time consuming to rip movies and then transfer to a HDD, and then play thru a media player. Unless it is of some content which otherwise is not easily available and can't be played directly, it is better to go for something which has the capability to play the content directly like a BD player. If you can rip the movie, you can download the same as well right, it is easier. But in such cases you'll not get the benefit of the original content.

Anyway I will vote for a BD player with good media playing capability, which most of them can do today.
