Hi guys!
Wanted to share my recent LP acquiring experiences. A while back I had got myself a Citibank card with the express intention of accesing both Paypal and Borderlinx.

It has made my life a lot easier!

I bought over 50 LPs from ebay sellers and Audiogon. Using Paypal as the safe payment interface.

Bordelinx became the central hub for all the LPs to come to. Then all were shipped together at a decent price!

The only b1+(h is that Bordelinx attached the dutiable value plus an additinal tax that really makes the shipping a hefty price to pay!

So, while paying up, I cringed a bit (actually, a lot). But then, today I felt all the better for having paid up, coz my stuff got shipped to me in under 4 days!

:clapping:

All in all, darned happy!

This is great news, the only worry is the additional tax , please throw some more light on the same for the benefit of all members .

Ok... here it goes.

Once your package reaches the borderlinx guys in the states or the UK (depending on which address you'veselected), they ascertain the dutiable value, which (inevitably) one has to get corrected by sending them an email with a invoice.

Now apart from the duties, they slap on an additonal tax , which is even more than the duty!

I am copying and pasting an excerpt from my invoice!

here:

Shipped weight 10.68 kg
Duty $ 34.40 INR 1602.84
Tax $ 42.35 INR 1973.26
Shipping charges $ 89.00 INR 4146.88
Hub handling charge $ 0.00 INR 0.00
Repacking charge $ 0.00 INR 0.00
Insurance charge $ 0.00 INR 0.00
Total charges $ 165.75 INR 7722.98

So, in essence the shipping is quite reasonable. The time taken is way lesser than a domestic courier takes!

But the guys being too honest at Borderlinx have already charged me the ture duty and taxes as specified by the Govt of India.

Now the plus is that the stuff reaches in great shape and quick.

The negative is: One will have to pay the hefty tax and duty on what would otherwise be let go of by the customs guys - who usually let go of Books, Music and DVDs without making a fuss about duty taxes or even chai nashta (unless it that time of the month for their wives...).

one lucky brother!

I just posted the packing of how i got my stuff from ElusiveDisc.com in the "ordering online & vendors feedback" thread.
Really pleased with their care to the details & safeguarding the package.

And from your similar experience, seems like some companies have really learnt that the customers are the best marketing tools they have! So every order must be handled with care.

What all did you get? preowned LPs? in good shape? for how much?

Hi Malvai,

The duty charged were right, you cannot escape the duty if it comes thru DHL. They usualy do pre-clearance of your goods( for customs duty alone) before it arrives india to avoid backlog and delay.

So all the tax will be pre-calculated an will be submitted to customs and they will approve it.. Like that it goes.. I dig deep on this subject last week for my Term-2 BD which i received thru AMZ.

Normaly the duty is 10% for the LP's / CD's/DVD's and other recorded media items... + tax mentioned below

The calcualtion goes as below.

Basic Customs duty-BCD( 10%) is arrived by :::::inclusive of actual items value + 20% frieght charges + 1% landing charges.

Apart from above tax as : CVD 10% + cess 3% + Education cess 3% + SAD 4%

Total duty will be approx :24.05% + Rs.300 DHL handling charges + Rs.31 Service tax on handling charges.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Example cut & paste from another post of mine:::Actual i have received for HDDVD Rom ordered form china.

1) Value of invoice : $35
2) Product cost : $35 * Rs.46.60( exchange rate)= Rs.1631
3) Freight cost : Rs.344 ( roughly it is 20% of product cost)
4) TOTAL ACCESSIBLE COST TAKEN AS : 1995
5) TAXES : BCD( 7.5%=150 ) + CVD( 8% =172) + CESS(5%=5) + EDU.CESS(3%=10) SAD(4%=93) = TOTAL DUTY RATE (21.55% = 430)
6) FEDEX HANDLING CHARGES = 300 + ( Service tax=31) = 331
7) TOTAL COST FOR TAX AND DUTIES ALONE= Rs.761

Hello Malvai,
What is the process paying through Paypal. Yesterday both my credit and debit cards were denied on the Paypal invoice generated by merchant.

Vasu

In paypal, just as you're finalising payment, Paypal asks for what kind of payment you're making , just check on the "payment for goods" option and it will go thru!

Yup... The thing is there is no LP player at home!!! Except for the Thorens and that too is dismantled! Working on refurbishing the SME 3009 arm...

Could I pls pls pls borrow your Project TT??? ;-)

On a serious note... You know what I'm doing today? have reattached the SL1300 to the home system...

Have place the Stevie Ray Lp on the platter and crancking it as I rework the SME 3009 arm of the Thorens!

Btw, Sid, am auditoning the Clearaudio Ambient on Monday (at a friends place, if I like it, will buy it!):yahoo:

Thanx buddy!

Am missing Buddy Guy and Robert Cray in my Vinyl collection. Don't have any from those two super blues rockers....

I'll keep an eye out for them. Also, don't forget Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Robert Johnson, if you're into them... :)

Them and some Son House and Sister Rosetta Tharpe too...

Incidentally have you heard her? She was into Gospel Blues at a time when Blues was considered the Devils music....

Here's a link (Elvis's impiration perhaps??!):
