Hi Members,

While watching reviews of some HT i saw this forum which impressed me a lot and decided to post my query here to get expert guidance instead of wasting time.

I shifted to a new home and looking for a 5.1 HT Package under 35000/-.
Seen online reviews of Onkyo,Yamaha,Pioneer and Denon. All are offering 5.1 Package.

Heard Onkyo 3300/3400 model and Yamaha YHT-196 but disappointed by the sub performance as it was a passive one and dealer said that most of such packages has passive sub only.

So i am also considering a setup where i can purchase a 5.1 speaker system with active sub like JBL Cinema series and additional A/V receiver under 35K.

I am an amateur in audio world with basic understanding of audio.I love to watch movies on HD channels on my sony 42in led and listening music from my ipod.

Request expert suggestions in order to build my setup.

Thanks,
Abhijit Singh

Hi Abhijit,

You have few more options,

Yamaha YHT-299 ( 35k - 38k)
Onkyo 3500 ( 33k - 36k).

If you can extend the budget little bit more, you can buy separate AVR and you can go for separate speaker packages.

I use Yamaha YHT-299, so far so good, IMO its the best one in 35-38 price range.

Thanks

Welcome to HFV :)

You can check these options if your budget is strict.

Boston Acoustics Soundware XS 5.1
Yamaha YHT 299
JBL Cinema BD 500
Boston Acoustics 2310

Hi Members,

I am looking for 299 but in Delhi i have searched most of the consumer electronic stores with no joy its not available and seems out of stock.

So now i am thinking about YHT 196 and also auditioned it once with some music tracks. The sub [Passive] performance is not up to the mark but enough for normal listening.

The spec sheet suggest that 196 support Dolby Digital and DTS codecs.I have to connect my Airtel HD DTH which is providing Dolby Digital Plus which seems having higher bit rate and supports 7.1 too though the setup is 5.1.

So is there a significant difference between DD and DDP??

One more model is there between YHT 299 & 196 which is YHT1810 which support Dolby Digital Plus but not sure of sound quality of that.

Is any one using YHT 196 or YHT 1810 with HD DTH Connection then please contribute here so i can take my decision.

In addition of above i would like to know how to connect YHT 299 setup to power source.

If i get it some how in Delhi then i need this info because i just have one power point on which i have connected a 2 point voltage stabilizer,on 1st point i have LED Connected and on second point i have power strip with multiple ports which i am using to connect my 2.1 system and dth box.

Is it ok to connect the A/V and sub on power strip ?? Instead connecting directly on dedicated point on voltage stabilizer.[just have 2]

My area is prone to power cuts and fluctuation and i just want to make sure that the way i am planning to connect would not harm the equipment.

Thanks in advance your your inputs.

Thanks,
Abhijit Singh

To answer your question on connecting the sources, you can use a spike buster (Belkin) to connect all sources. That's how i have wired it and haven't seen any issues so far.

Try checking for Yamaha 299 in Reliance Digital. I bought it from Reliance Digital a month ago, though I have seen a lot of posts saying this model is out of production and is not available. Same is the issue with Onkyo 3500.

You can audition Pioneer HTP 323 which is also in the same range.

Thanks Santosh for sharing this, just wondering  if i put all these on spike buster would there be enough power for A/V and Sub to produce optimal sound ??

Tata Sky HD STB, A/V, Sub and TV are connected to the spike buster.

After the initial setup, the surround speakers seemed to be under powered, but that was becuase of the setup and nothing to do with the sources connected (YPAO fixed that issue).

I haven't faced any other issues so far.
