Hi all,

i'm in search for a best value for money 55inch TV.

Below is what i've seen

1) SAMSUNG 55" UA 55F6400
it was available in ebay for 89k and local reliance/chroma has it for 1.4L

2) SONY 55w800B- 1.35L(PAI electronics)
this is i guess older model than w950

3) SONY 55w800A - 1.59L (Chroma)
i really liked the color it displays, but i feel it has very big pixels when you come close.

4) LG 55LA6200 1.4L (Chroma)

5) LG 55LA6910 1.55L (PAI electronics)

My primary use is for watching Movies.

Requirement:

1) i'm not so keen about smart part of these LCD's, its just an added advantage but not a deal maker.
2) Should have excellent color display.
3) Must have ethernet connection

My budget is upto 1.5L

Also, the viewing distance is 9.5 feet, currently have a 32inch and its too small.

Please let me know your views on which one is better and if you have any other models known. I'm not interested in plasmas..

Thanks.
Rajesh

since your viewing distance is only 9.5 feet i would suggest to go for a 42 inch and sony42w700b(new 2014 model) is a good option....but if you watch only HD then sony48w800b(new 2024 model) is a good choice...both tvs have got excellent reviews...take a demo and decide....

Since you are inclined to movies i would suggest you to go in for a decent projector for movies and get a tv from sharp or toshiba which do offer 3 year warranty. The above mentioned tv models are not bad either. They offer you 1 year warranty only whereas Toshiba offers 3 years ....many users have pointed out early failure of led tvs and cost of repair is exhorbitant you can refer to some older threads for more details. You can look for 42 inch tv for basic tv viewing if you are interested in watching tv channels....but if movies are your only priority you must get a projector for better experience........you can also pay extra for lg....sony...samsung, etc and get extended warrranty. But i personally feel that buying a toshiba tv and even if it works for three years and fails is much better than spending a very high price for other brands.....Just think that after buying an expensive tv and using it for just 3 years and if it fails. You are the best judge and can decide on whether you want to go the projector way+led or just an led.......i stronly advice you to go through previous threads

Hi, do not go for Samsung 6 series. If you like Samsung then series 7 or 8 but they are priced higher. On the other hand Song W800 series are very good. So if you were to select between the above, I would say Sony W800 for sure.
Have not seen Lg in person, so can't comment.

If you are concerned about viewing distance, please do not worry. I have a 50inch tv at 6-8ft viewing distance, so 55inches works perfect. IF you want to further reconfirm, you can google THX recommended viewing distance.

Hi raj_ch2002

Decide on what are your requirements in a TV....most importantly the connectivity option...features....basic or special requirements....viewing distance etc.....TVs look good at the store and there is a fair amount of settings to be done at home as you have to factor the amount of lighting and placement....here are some links on TVs....

Plasma vs LED vs LCD TVs

LED vs LCD vs plasma TV - Which? Technology

Can LED LCD look as good as plasma? - CNET

CNET's guide to 3D TV: What you (still) need to know - CNET

Whats the Difference Between Active 3D and Passive 3D TVs? | eBay

Today's TVs don't last long like the OLD CRTs and you can expect a shelf life of 3-9 years...there are instances where big brands panels have failed after 1/2 years of use...so the key thing is warranty...Toshiba & Sharp offer 3 years warranty.....

You should go and do a side by side comparision in terms of PQ and features at any big electronics store like Vijay Sales / Croma / Reliance Digital and shortlist the brand / model that appeals to you....Sharp has the Quart series which is worth a check.....

Toshiba also has some impressive models......50 inch....MRP around 85k odd....Vijay Sales sells for 78k and most likely with the local dealer you may get the same for 66k odd...this is a fact as I helped a friend a few days back.....3 years warranty

Here is the 55 inch

Hope this helps...

IMO pana plasma is the best option
have been using since 2008
u can see the difference in clarity if u watch star tv on plasma and led-- watch for the hair resolution on the head of any actor
secondly colors are warmer with more depth on pplasma --no eye fatigue also
last u can get pana plasma at sub 1 lac for 50-55inch
for the best pana 55 model u can simply visit the showroom or research the net
all the best

Within your budget, Sony W950A is a great option. Since Sony's new lineup for 2014 was revealed, its price has a taken a huge drop from 2,20,000 to around 1,50,000. I bought the same set for 1.51L 20 days ago. It is one of the best LED televisions from last year. You can look for reviews online and they will confirm the same. I highly recommend this TV. The only barrier could be its availability and I'm not sure if this television set is available with retailers anymore.

Please give Samsung 55F5500 a demo, recently available in 55" according to @tigerwig. He says that it retails for ~76K.

55", 1.5L, Excellent Colour reproduction and for Movies.. :licklips:
But No Plasma..
Anyway.. Panny also shutdown their Plasmas..

55" is an ideal size going by THX's recommendation. They recommend bigger TVs for the given viewing distance against conventional recommendation. And that's for sheer immersive experience.
HDTV Set Up ? THX.com

I had auditioned Sony's 800A, Triluminous models 900A and 950A and Sharp's Quattron LED (couldn't recall the models) few months before and I liked Sharp's one to Sony's Triluminous ones since the default colour profile in Sharp's was not terribly over saturated and colour reproduction was pretty good. But never liked Samsung's midrange models.

Having said that, when auditioning avoid the Dynamic and try Movie profile. This profile is not a good one to test colours but for motion handling. Choose the one that is easy on your eyes.

Just checked Sony's site. Looks like the new 950B (with xTended Dynamic range) in gorgeous Wedge design is available at the same price as that of 950A's. Give that too an audition.

BTW.. Once you buy a TV calibrate it. You can checkout flatpanelshd.com for calibration settings.

Happy Buying :)

Thanks a lot guys for the suggestions...

i have only 9.5 feet to work with but really don't want anything below 50 incher.
what about the new sony 50inch model 50W800B?

i've checked Toshiba, but didn't like the display quality, you know of any specific model?

Excellent Colour reproduction and for Movies - these 2 are actually 2 different expectations, wifey wants bright and deep colors and i'll use it for movies.

i felt with plasma displays, we could see the pixals on the tv.

Plasma (Panny ST and GT series):
Deep colours - Yes
Higher Brightness - No
Colour reproduction including Black - Good; For Pitch black, we need to wait for OLED
Viewing Angle - You can even lie down and watch.. :ohyeah:
Motion Handling - Good
HD picture quality - Good
SD picture quality - Good

But they cannot perform at their best in a bright room (with lot of windows). And not recommended for Still Image Viewing as they are prone to image retention issue.

Which models did you audition ? I suppose you have auditioned HD models and not full HD ones. I've 42" GT 50 at a distance of 6ft and it's fine for HD/FullHD videos but the mentioned problem is for SD channels. SD looks good, a few feet away.

50" Plasma would be fine for 10ft. Btw I forgot to mention that Sony's LED models are not IPS panels so they have quite narrow viewing angles. Only LG and Panasonic were using IPS panels but not sure about the new models. And most TVs above 80k have Ethernet connection. And certainly Sony's have.

Hi
I am going down this road too. Started shopping for a 55"and looked at the usual gamut of Sony, Samsung, Sharp (that's what most big shops seem to store) and a couple of Toshibas. Most of them were, as they say in Hindi- unnees-bees- small differences.

I then happened to go to VU a local brand (Zenith) and found it to be quite good and when I compared the PQ found it no different from the big name brands. Went to their website (Vu Technologies) where they have done a direct comparison with major brands. Seems to be standing up to the big names feature for feature.

In addition they have a PC-added version. This might be good for download and watch chaps or for those who want to watch streaming videos off the Net.
Cost wise, their 65" cost is equal to the 55"cost of the big names.

I presume the money they save on big bang advertising is being passed on to the consumer. I suggest that you take a look at this too. I liked it. I moved to the 65" with the PC added. Am awaiting delivery by early next week! Cant wait to check it out. Cost me 2.20 for the 65". Without the PC, it would be around 1.50-1.80. Great value for money, in my view. And no compromise in any feature. All you need to do is get over the mindset of big brands.

Thanks. I found Sony W950A and Sammy F8000 to be equally good and it was obviously its mouth watering price that made me go for the Sony. The F8000 has a lot going in its favour though, with all the bells and whistles one would want in a smart TV. Anyway, I'm really happy with the delightful picture quality on this TV set.

2.2L for VU 65 + built in PC...................get the Samsung 64F8500 for 1.90L while stocks last, way superior than VU or any other tv out there :)

Finally settled with 50w800B...got it wall mounted. From 9 feet I think this is best size, 55 was a bit larger...thanks for all your suggestions...

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
