buying a 55inch TV, suggestions needed.

Guys, help me select my next tv. Am done with the size. 55inch it would be. Unless a 50 incher stands out. Bigger but not below 50in. I liked 55 w950b with the wedge design. Though design is very appealing to me, I am bit concerned with its 89 viewing angle. I did check very briefly the set at Sony Indiranagar. Didn't check the viewing angle though. I know the limitations of a passive 3d display, and liked active w850 3d a bit more than w950. Again I did not check the settings to compare w850 vs w950. What do you all say about the viewing angle of w950? Is that too much a problem. I have a fairly large living room. About 20ft. Will it be a problem? Please don't suggest me a brand like vu etc. Have seen a lot of them and they don't appeal to me. Am not brand conscious though. The best tv that I have seen is Panasonic vt50. So please suggest me quality. THX certified will be great, but can't find one. Am concerned with power consumption and want a 3d led tv. Tv will run at least for 12hrs a day if not more. Also my Xbox 360 will run with it.

I would prefer a Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG. Please let me know if any of you have a preference and a specific model that I should not miss out. Probably a plasma tv won't be a good idea looking at my preferences, though that's what I would like to have.

I think I made it complicated enough. But still any suggestion is warmly welcomed. Budget about 1.5lakh.

Couple of things more. My living room has 10ft+ continuous Windows and door and therefore, extremely illuminated, unless the curtains are drawn. I stream media between gadgets regularly. I have a WiFi home setup where a lot of gadgets are hooked. I like the time machine concept of LG where I can record tv on a HDD. My 2 kids will regularly use the tv for YouTube, Xbox and I will use it to check out my DSLR photos and videos, and watch movies in HD. 3D is additional requirement only.

cheers

Hi, you can try for 55 w950a ( sonys flagship model) rather than 950b as it is a better model and VA based panel. the price has also been reduced as it is last years model

what is ur viewing distance? i had 9.5ft and felt 55 was very big, so settled with 50

more than 15ft. And I don't want a projector:) I read multiple guides and they say, for 3D it's bigger the better. So IMO you have right size TV. 55 would have been good for 3D.

@rohitpuri I thought IPS is a better panel than a VA panel. Viewing angle is better in IPS panels. Colours are better too in IPS. Another problem for me particularly with VA panel is, it's soft and can be scratched. Also not a durable one when compared to IPS panels. Again some IPS panels are not as fast. My current TV is a TN panel probably and a friend of my kids scratched it pretty bad. That's one more reason I am planning a change. So durability is one more need for me. Please let me know if I am missing something. Thanks.

Btw, 55w950b is the flagship model. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZPzapw9OgU

I'm not sure about the durability aspect but the inky blacks on a VA panel totally blow IPS panels out of the water. The W950A is a critics' favourite from last year, thanks to its inky blacks and brilliant colour reproduction. It looks gorgeous too.I bought one about a month ago for 1.5L and I would recommend this over 55w950b . Having said that, people do complain about 55w950a 's viewing angles but that issue never really troubled me

@tanmays LG IPS vs VA panel - YouTube

here you go. Though these are harsh tests, but kids may reproduce few of them:lol:

Haha. I don't really have kids running around my house so that wasn't an issue I considered while going for the 55W950A. If it's a big issue for you, perhaps the 55W950B is the right set for you. However, the 55W950A is head and shoulders above its newer sibling when it comes to picture quality.

Btw, 55w950b is the flagship model. Sony W950 HD TV - Which? first look review from CES 2014 - YouTube

VA panels have better contrast and blacks. IPS panels have better viewing angles as stated by other members. You can always wallmount it a little higher if you like. 950a is last years flagship model. 950b does not have good reviews (whathifi.co.uk) athough I have not seen it personally

Developments! I went to 4 shops to try out a few TV sets. Sony 950A or B, both have a hard glass on top. I did like VA over IPS!! IPS had good colours but VA was fast when watching sports channels. The demonstrator at Girias was pretty good and told me pretty right, that I better go for a 4k LG for 2lakhs rather than going for a Ture HD or 2k TV at 1.6lakhs. Another guy at Unilet mentioned that on May 15th a lot of new TV models will be launched from all the big brands except Sony. I called up the Primary Panasonic dealer. He too mentioned that they are launching new models on 15th May. So I am bit stuck up now. 4k is the way to go and it's true. In a few months the Ture HD and 2k TVs will fade away just like the TN panel TVs. Is it worth spending 1.5lakhs for a 2k TV today or is it better to spend 2lakhs for a 4k TV in a month's time?! I guess I will wait for 2 or 3 weeks to know it better. Btw I liked LG55LA6910 and was offered 1.48lakhs for it. It comes with recording on HDD. (This world cup football I have to record a few matches to watch them later). Found a Samsung 7500 series 55inch TV and it was really good in picture quality and I was offered 1.5lakhs for it. I was told that this 7500 model is the only TV, which can be upgraded with the latest firmware as it comes. The TV also has integrated HD camera for skype.

There are only a very few options available in the market on 55in TVs currently. To add, Panasonic has stopped manufacturing Plasmas for India for last 6 months!!! I couldn't find a plasma with full HD and 3D panel from any brand in stock with the 4 major retailers I visited today. Well it's not that I am inclining towards plasma for obvious reasons. So all these lead me to wait!!

Should I 4k my next TV?? Not a bad idea unless 55inch True HD LED prices drop further and significantly!

4 K content availability is an issue , we hardly have 15-20 HD channels and I think that you should invest in 55 w950a as its stock must be limited. A new line up of TVs will keep on coming but quality persevere

you got a valid point there...........despite the lack of 4k content, the upscaling on a 4k tv is excellent. So all your 720p/1080p content will be upscaled to 4k!!! which would look better than native 1080p. Which Lg 4k model is available for 2k?

@aakashr there's an LG 4k model which a shop at Indiranagar is ready to give for 2.15lakhs. It's 55LA9650. Otherwise its 2.35lakhs. Now Samsung 40in 4k will be available for 1.05lakhs. May be that will be a better one to check out. What do you say.

Toshiba has 58" UHD on "offer" for around 2.20L Looks like the UHD wars will be on with the Samsung curved screen etc scheduled to come out this week....wonder if the prices will sink below 2L

one suggestion,

Sony has artificial colour due to bravia engine and samsung has natural colours..
so you have to decide on this front also..

Indrajit that's a really good deal. You have to understand the 4k is more of added treat that really is not going to do much for now. Suggest to demo, play some SD and HD content and compare it to the top LEDs from Sony/Samsung.

My take would be, you wont really spot the difference between a upscaled 4k and 2k. 4K is still in infant state. Given that it would be another 3-4 years for 4k to be easily accessible, I would suggest save that 70k and invest. 4-5 yrs later sell the Tv and buy a good 4K TV.
