Finally, I convinced my parents to phase out our 20 year old 21" CRT and buy a new TV. They really wanna go for Sony but I have got few other options in mind. If anyone would help me on deciding which one to go for, it'd be great !

Here are my choices:

  • LG 42LW4500 (Passive 3D LED)
  • LG 50PZ850 (Passive 3D Plasma)
  • Panasonic Viera TH-P42U30D(or 50) (Plasma)
  • Panasonic Viera TH-P42GT20D (Active 3D Plasma) - What's this one's street price ? I've seen it at around 50-60k and also at 90k !!
  • Samsung PS51D550 (Active 3D Plasma)
  • Samsung UA40D5000PRMXL (LED)
  • Sony KDL-40EX520 (LED)

My requirements;

  • No LCD's
  • If a 3DTV, 2D-3D conversion is required.
  • We're gonna mostly pay for the TV in EMI's so Rs 60K is the max limit (I know some models I listed are too costly but I don't know how much is the street price :))
  • Few years back, Plasma's used to deliver the best picture, is it true now or do LED TV's take the crown ?
  • Is their any other worthy 3D TV which sells around the 60k mark ?
  • Are Active 3D worth the extra bucks or is Passive enough for the normal use ?
  • TV won't be used for gaming.

Also, I wanted to select a model from the monolithic range from Sony but the screens are too glossy and reflective, so decided against, will this be a problem ?

All the models I've seen from the official websites so I assume they are not phased-out ones, right ?

Feel free to suggest other models too.

Thanks.

you have asking for to much information.Just go through all the threads you will get your answers.Their many frends in the forum who have differnt opinions for the same product. You have to go through all of them and to decide yourself for the final decision.

LG 50PZ850 :I do not think the LG model PZ850 is PASSIVE!!..Just check the specs.

It's 3D type is Active Shutter and the transmission is RF (not the Bluetooth as Samsung which is preferred). As per most of the HV members, LG PLASMAS should be avoided AT ANY COST.

As 3D is also in your consideration: better go for models >50 inch to have a feel of depth.

LG LW4500: 3D is real good on PLASMAs, also the >50 inch versions are very expensive.

SAMSUNG PS51D550: If you do not have issues with reflections, then this is the best bet for 63k.

SAMSUNG PS51D490: at 55K with resolution=1366x768 (720p), had great reviews from the HFV members. Consider this if your viewing distance is 12ft and above (as there would be no visual difference between HD and FUL LHD at this distance)

PANASONIC: check the responsiveness of customer care, heard some members having issues with customer care when they had issues with the TVs.But the PLASMA models are real good at an expense.

I thought all LG's were passive 3d!
Between the LG 42 led 3d and the samsung 51 plasma 3d which one is better overall ?
Also, i can't seem to find that many panasonic plasma models...could you suggest a 3d and a non 3d one in my price range ?

3D is better on >50 inch screens. Have a demo of both LG 42 and Samsung 51 to come to a conclusion. Also, confirm whether LG being passive, will it display all 1080 lines in 3D. there was a discussion going on on this.

You can always go for a plasma as far as you do not believe in myths about plasmas!

What myths ? I don't know any :)
If i'm not wrong, there was supposed to be a firmware release which would enable full hd 3d on the passive lg...has is been released ? I didn't see any on the website.

Buying TV on EMI ?? This Gadget will be zero value even before you pay your amount in full, and what if it conks out after the 1 year warranty period ? EMIs will continue and no Tv. Ouch !! what a heart-ache. Add to it the massive electric bills !!

Pay full cash for the TV and invest the EMI saved. Your parents will be proud of you.

very good suggestion......but what if we don't have enough to pay it in full cash? but in present day scenario, we see most people opting the EMI option over the cash payment option....
Ridiculous it may sound.....many feel that having an EMI option activated will have security against the defects/product issues in case any so that they can threaten to stop payments (not practical) till it is resolved :p

After reading many other threads, I'm thinking of buying the SAMSUNG PS51D550...i just have a couple other questions...
-Do we get bluetooth glasses with this or the IR ones ?
-Is the viewing angle good for 3D ?
-What do few others mean by a reflecting screen ?
-It has 2D to 3D conversion, right ?
I will be demoing the model soon, what price should i ask ?
Thanks :)

1) Yes, you get BLUETOOTH glasses SSG-3050GB
2)the viewing angle was good
3) If you have bulb/window exactly facing the TV, you might lose your concentration on the screen due to reflections.
4)yes, it has 2D-3D conversion

63k is the best price available......bargaining below this price depends on the skills:ohyeah:

Thanks guys...i've been thinking about the VT20 too...it looks like it is quite popular on this forum.
What year model is it ?
Btw, regarding the VT20, what are the answers to my above questions ?

Go for Pana plasma. You will never regret. Both GT20 and VT20 have the neoPDP panels which are the best plasma panels of last year. They have very good black levels and near to zero IR. Stay away from LG.

@OP

You mentioned your budget 60k and you listed LG 50PZ850 as an option . Want to ask from where are you getting it at that price, I might be interested if its around 60k.

Except for the deep blacks and neo panel...what else does the pana vt20 have which trumps the samsung d550 ?
Also, if pana's blacks are rated say, 10/10...how much would you guys give the samsung one, no biasing please :) ?

@techie I didn't know at that time how much it will cost...i just assumed it will similar to the samsung or pana ones.

For an average person, do you think that one will be able to see the diffedrence between the neo panels and the samsung ones.
I ask this because...many of my friends and family don't even notice the massive back light bleeding or the bluish blacks on my samsung p2250 monitor. I do, though ;)

Any average person would definitely appreciate the deep black levels of the Pana plasmas. For a person with more interest it is a treat. :yahoo:
IMHO when you buy a television, go for the PQ. Any other feature could be compensated else where. Like audio - you have a HT. media support through USB - can get a BDP/Media players.
Any the 3 year Warranty on the Pana plasma is always +1 though am not sure if the offer is still around. I heard some people still get it.
