Hello All,

I would like to state upfront that i am a novice when it comes to audio systems. Hopefully will make a clear point of what i am looking for.

To explain my setup, I have

  • Sony Bravia HDTV - KDL 40 EX520 (4 HDMI In, 1 Digital Optical Out, 1 3.5mm Jack audio out)

  • Airtel Set-top Box with HD Connectivity - ( HDMI Out , S/PDIF Out)
    PC with HDMI Out.
I wanna build a decent home theater setup , by hooking up my set-top box and PC to my TV.

From what i have looked up so far, It is my understanding that there is no easy way to have a good 5.1 Surround sound without a dedicated AV Receiver.

To set up a good surround system I believe i have to do the following,

  • Connect the set top box to the receiver through the HDMI Cable.
  • Connect my PC to the receiver through the HDMI Cable.
  • The 5.1 System to the receiver through the dedicated connectors in the recievers.
  • Audio out from the TV to the receiver though either the 3.5mm Jack / Digital optical out.
My requirements being,
  • Able to watch movies / play games with 5.1 sound from my PC.
  • See Dolby Digital supported shows from my set-top box.
  • Switch between either cable / set-top box / PC outputs.

Will this setup work ? Is there a better way to do this ? Please suggest.

I have not yet bought the AV Receiver or the speaker system. It would be great if anyone can suggest me a entry level AV Receiver and speaker system that are available in India, budget being 15-20k

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bhalakumaran

Welcome to HFV. For your use, Onkyo 3400 is recommended. But you will need to up the budget to around 25K. Lots of threads are available about Onkyo 3400.

I have the similar requirement and my budget is around 30k with major usage with my Airtel DTH HD setup box. I also need bluetooth or Wifi connectivity to play music from my mobile. As I am a complete novice in this area, I want to start with a complete new system. Please suggest best and latest (2017) AVR with speaker in my budget range. I browsed many threads which are 3-5 years old, so not sure if those suggestions are still good today.

Your budget will have to be upped to get a full receiver + speaker systems
The cheapest package with a separate AVR starts at around 28k
Like Shop for Yamaha YHT-196 5.1 Bookshelf Speakers Home Theatre System at Reliance Digital
And since it the lowest entry level package, it wouldn't have Bluetooth or WiFi
But a cheap Logitech Bluetooth adapter can be added later, if you need
(I cant find any Onkyo 3400 links, but it should be similar price range)

At strictly <20k budget, you would get HTIB systems from Philips/Sony/Samsung etc which do not have separate AVR.

Remember, the audio quality of a Yamaha 196 or Onkyo 3400 would be superior to the Philips/Sony/Samsung HTIBs.

Based on your locations, there are many dealers who provide demos of available systems, please visit them and audition.

Also there are a lot of FMs in your locations who i am sure can welcome you to their residence to showcase what they have.....

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
