Chromecast - $35 device for a Smart tv

Already we can do with wifi enabled tvs via smartphones. Why we need to buy this any added facility
Well , the SMART tv remains smart only to a point where later SMARTER TV come in.

An external device keeps upgrading the SMARTness of the TV.

Also budget and older TVs can now be fixed with this device and improved.

Looked good at first. I thought its an android stick.disappointed.I don't think its of any use.It is basically a streamer and works with a phone/tab/pc only.

We have a host of other devices like Roku, apple tv, wdtv and especially the android tv sticks, all of them offer much more possibilities that too independently.

The only thing about chromecast is airplay at 35 USD. Why not buy an android stick for 50 USD.

Its a boon for someone like who travel frequently. All I need is this stick and all the music and video on phone. Also, in future developers will add "cast" feature to most of app which means not just YouTube but also apps like video player will help us play content in our phone to TV. So its not for everyone but a boon for people like me

The sdk which was released with Chrome cast to the developers had the means of adapting native Android apps to function with chrome cast. I dont see that day very far when apps like es file explorer and mx player would get this feature too... once they do then this becomes the device to beat. Till then it only satisfies very few.

As compared to the chinese android dongles, agreed they bring a fuller android experience to your tv but are, more often than not, pretty unreliable. This chromecast is aa no brainer device that simply acts as a go between. Think of it like the hdmi cable which just extends the best signal to the tv... simplifying the ordeal of bridging your content, albeit cloud based currently, to you tv.

Imho it had great potential once the ecosystem to enhance its usage expands around this mini marvel. I had my friend hunt for one last night ;-p but no luck... I guess I have to wait till local/network based media playback becomes a reality

This device has some potential to fully replace my XBox 360 (which I solely use for Video streaming only nowadays), only if it had a bigger app ecosystem.
The concept at this price is quite attractive though.

Just a question, Can this device be used for "casting" all video/screen from my android phone/tablet or from only a few apps which supports casting?

Currently only three appps support cast. Youtibe, netflix and google play. This is bound to grow when everyone gets their devices to play woth.... it is also suggested that anything that can stream into chrome currently like even a mkv file dropped into chrome to play (tested by some), can be pushed to cast....

Seems like there are more options of casting via the chrome browser on a PC rather than on a phone/tablet.

Has potential, but seems very limited now. On a related subject, does anybody know where you can get a bluetooth/NFC streamer in India??

Google Chromecast

Hi

Anyone using Chromecast so far?
Any reviews?

Its available on ebay for lowest Rs. 5350

How is it better than using normal DLNA streaming?

Re: Google Chromecast

I think there was a discussion related to the same under Netflix streaming thread. But this was launched at $35 in US and 5350 Indian price is too high not worth it as you need the netflix subscription as well to watch movies/tv shows. But I think you can use this convert your existing TV into a smart tv if it is not already.

Thanks

Re: Google Chromecast

Not only Netflix but I believe smaller things like Tab casting the Chrome Browser and even using it with Google Hangouts to have a Video Chat would be a cool thing :D

In time to come we may see several innovative Apps too ones this Device to TV relation is created and controlled by Google.

I just ordered mine out of excitement and actually wanted to give it a shot.

Oh by the way, there seems to be a good wait time to get Chromecast delivered and which is why its selling at 70$ at Amazon in US (almost like Rs. 4200)

Re: Google Chromecast

The big advantage of the Chromecast compared to any other setup which you may have is that it is small enough to take anywhere and take over any TV you have access to. All you need is a wifi network to connect the Chromecast and any device on the same network can use the Chromecast so it does work at hotels, bars, your house, a friends house.

If you already have a nice setup in your entertainment room like a HTPC, Roku, Apple TV or any other media streaming device, you would not need the Chromecast if that is the only place you view content

Re: Google Chromecast

I pre-ordered one on Amazon as it is currently sold out everywhere. The tentative delivery date is by the end of August.
EBay dacoits are selling used for more than $75.

Re: Google Chromecast

I believe it is the initial hype and after sometime it should come back to normal price as the same happened to raspberry pi. The launch price of $35 is what making people to jump and get hold of one out of curiosity.

Re: Google Chromecast

For Google, Content is their Domain ...
so I have high hopes in future

Streaming from Cloud is one major drawback as against regular DLNA sharing/streaming.

We are still century backward when it comes to Bandwidth ...atleast in Tier 2/3 cities.
