Confused between Blu Ray and HD Media players

to play 1080p from a htpc he will need to spend a decent amount.. and power consumption will be lot compared to media player..

also then add a video card and a good sound card.. will make the cost of media player itself..

Confused btw DVD Player, Media Player & Blu Ray Player

Hello all,

Recently i thought of buying a Philips DVD player and following are the two models that i have slected

1. DVP3568/94 (Has 1080p upscaling)
2. BDP2700/51 (Blu Ray Player)

Before that i just thought of reviewing at this wonderful forum. After my research i found that many people are using WD live media player for watching movies.

My question is, what is the key difference between these three? is it something related to streaming feature or HD playback or any other features? which would be the best to buy?

This thread answers most of your questions. So I have merged your thread with this. Please continue here.

Thanks Venkatcr.. the information in this thread was very useful and the detailed explanation from you was informative..

I am planning to buy BDP cos of upscaling features that is usually not found in media player. Also, i watch movies using original DVD which i find satisfaction on viewing experience in terms of both Audio and Video

I would suggest a media player is the way to go; the main contenders are wd (biggest manufacturer), xtreamer (sells most in mid range) and acryan (best support); choose the models according to your needs;

though atom based are just about to enter the market, you can get good deals on the older and still very much capable models; also coming soon are Google TV based devices or choose AMD Bobcat or Zacat System rather then nVidia ION (Quite outdated); also nVidia Tegra based devices will be the in thing in the coming months...

Then, what about the large collection of DVD's that i have it in my shelf, since Media player doesn't support discs.. humm, ripping all those DVD's and playing via Media player, Does it worth?

sure, i will give a second thought and review the discussion on media players in this form before taking decision..
In your opinion which is the good Media player that you suggest for my 40' Samsung LCD TV? my budget is around 8000 bucks.

playon mini 6-6.5k; playon hd is going for around 8-8.5k as new models of both are coming soon; but these will also serve ur purpose well; this what they quoted me and I got the last one for further bargaining at 13.5k all inclusive including courier, so some bargaining is possible in all these prices below-

Sorry for reviving this year old thread.
I am currently using MEASY 1080p HD player(1yr old now).Remote stopped working and i could not find any spare for this device.
I can use it manually but no fast forward and rewind options working. It was a very good player till it lasted.

Now my requirements
My friend is coming from US next month and i am thinking of buying a good blu ray player or a media player.I have a 43" samsung plasma 3DTV.
I have never watched any blu ray discs so far.All i watch is bluray rips(3D also), .AVI files and occasional tamil DVD's.
Panasonic BDT220 seems to be the most recommended player here as its easy to make it region free.
Should i buy BDT220 for around 90dollars from amazon and updgrade the firmware?
I guess it does not support 3D.Any other drawbacks in this? Will it play any formats through USB just like the HD player?

Should i go with any Asus or WD live players for around 5k? US price seems to be cheaper as we can get WIFI feature also in this price.
I have seen some latest Sony Blu ray players with wifi and 3D also for less than 100$ in US.

Please suggest me the best options that can be bought from US.

I was in similar situation, and I now decided to go for Panasonic BD or Sony S series Blu Ray player. The reason is these players also come with Wifi in built or supported, plays most of the formats, has the extra but important flexibility to play discs (BD/DVD/SACD/CD etc). So, its better to get them rather than just a media player. But the advantage with Media player is that, the software/ROM could be updated easily, but in these Disc players, it is not famous yet! This might change! So there is this convergence is happening, that these BD players becoming more of a media player.

Personally I would like to have a box with Android+BD+Media Player combo from a decent brand.

One more Option - please detail the pros and cons of this config.

TAB with HDMI output as media player. All downloaded files - movies and music can be player through HDMI or analog output. Specially suited for "Download guys" like me.

Cons - no remote - once the show starts - just sit back and enjoy. TABS have HD output also.

Experts please fill in case of errors and misinformations

How about buying a used HArmony remote which can mimic the same remote codes? Might turn out cheaper than buying a new Media Player. Later on, upgrade to HTPC
