Dear friends

Is it possible to convert a ceramic phono amp to magnetic phono amp? I looking to do this because the older systems have noise filters and rumble filters.I have few ceramic pick up recordplayers so planning to use the amp from HMV 1010 stereo amp or HMV 1212 stereo amp.Kindly guide what has to be done to make this amp working fine with magnetic cartridges of shure/audiotechnica.

any circuit diagram would help me to make one.
Regards

No, you cannot convert a ceramic phono amp to a magnetic phono amp. Ceramic phono amp is flat and almost line level, whereas Magnetic phono amp has much higher amplification (gain), since the cartridge signals are low level and in addition, magnetic cartridge phono amp has a RIAA equalization circuit built in, to take care of the cartridge's response curves.

There are many magnetic phono amps available. Check Needle Doctor if you want to buy one. If you want to build, try ebay (not India, but USA).

Cheers.

constructing a phono preamp on your own is always an interesting experience. no, you cant modify an existing ceramic phono preamp for work with magnetic cartridges but you can construct one all on your own. heres an interesting project DIY MM Phono Preamplifier Kit (Moving Magnet)

you can also do a google search and you'll get numerous circuit diagrams...if you are really game for it, try re-building the phono preamp of the NAD 3020A

Dear srinivas,
Older HMV cheap systems like STEREO 1010, STEREO 1212 were super fine systems for easy listening of gramophones in budget friendly way if your cartridge and stylus both are in good condition. These players dont harm Record at all if played at its optimum condition. HMV peoples were a design genious. You can restore your player if you wish. Contact me for any help.
