Converting an Existing guest room vs Building a new one in the Terrace

Lens shift for this projector is 47% of the screen width

flexible-installation.png

That means you can offet the PJ from the centre of screen by about 4.5 feet for a 135" screen.

Swamy has given a good suggestion for the placement issue.

Suggesstion, Drill the bathroom wall above 7 feet and construct a box loft with the 2 walls of bathroom support. (5' depth) Now you will have more space for fitting projector with enough space around for ventillation. (Attached the diagram)

I have done the similar way by (But filled entired height) penetrate to my Kitchen.

Note: Lens shif will work better horizontally, if you place the projector on the line of mid height of the screen, And work better vertically, if you place the projector on mid of the screen with line. In your proposed diagram, horizontal shift will not work for roof fitting.

Thanks Swamy,

I initially thought about this but the behind wall as the waterline and the Geyser. I will anyway check with a plumber on the feasibility of this one.

Either I will need to do this to get a 150" or will have to settle for 120" as the horizontal shift may not work as explained by Santy.

Plumbing & Electical work is simple for this size and also it is cost effective to get the BIG picture. SIZE DOES THE MATTER.! Post some pictures during your HT progress.

Hi Swamy,

No real progress done apart from installing the Projector and that too at a wrong distance.

I have pasted below few images of the existing room sorry for the poor image quality.
Image 1: Projector mounted and as you see there is a space of more than 2feet between the wall and Projector. I will be checking with the plumber this weekend to see if I can accommodate the shelf in the backwall

Image2: This is the sidewall and planning to close the window.

Image3: This is the front wall and as you see lot of electrical points that needs to be moved. The corner white casing is to bring the Hdmi cable.

Also Loft is there need to see whether to cover this one or remove it completely.

Few more snaps.
Please excuse me for the image quality. The wall as shown above is slightly grey in color and though painted after applying the putty seems to have lot of patches.

I have also not touched or changed any settings in my Projector and probably will need some assistance from our FM guru's.

This below song was the one I used to test the Black and Contrast levels when I did the audition for different projectors.

Was kind of Ok with Benq W 10170 and was good with Panasonic AE 7000(3,00,000:1 contrast ratio) but in Epson(3,20,000:1) this is really mind blogging and seriously the photos I have taken do not do justice for the quality of the images.

Just wanted to know how the lamp usage hours are calculated?
Do we need to turn on any setting?

As I have been using my Epson TW 8100 for more than 10 hours now and it still shows "0" hours.

Also, I have used a Cheap Chinese 10m HDMI cable(Rs 700) for the above projection and see a lot of grains.

Though it is reported many times in this forum that HDMI cables either work or do not work and there is no proportion\relation to the cost and qualtiy of the cable used. Is there any way to confirm this ?

Will a 15m MX cable which comes close to 2500 be better or go for the tested and tried bluerigger brand?

Earlier I used another 3m cable before mounting the Projector and did not notice this much of grains any pointers would be appreciated.

Same happened on my 6100 and one day it started showing from 14h. Now it updates regularly. Burn in a few more hours and it'll start showing.

As far as blu rays are concerned some have more grains than others. It would be better if could try by connecting the other cable and play the same scene.

I recently saw black swan on blu ray, was full of grains while pirates of carribean wasn't having any visible grains.

Thanks Koushik,

This cable is yet to be fixed and is running loosely on the ground.

As suggested by K2max6 will try the same disc with these 2 different cables and see if there is any considerable difference.

Just a thought, You can keep the window, Instead of closing, Change the curtain with blockout cloth to reduce the sun light 100%, when ever you need you can use the window. (If you want to use the room for other purposes also)

Better you can remove this. It looks distracting the view and also you will have more space for your curved screen.

Looks brighter picture. Where you will buy Tamil HD bluray? Please share.

Excellent song selection for High Contrast testing. Based on this selection, I could understand you are one of the guy who knows what is 'CONTRAST'.
Now my mind is slightly leaning towards Epson.(Even i bought sony which has 100000:1 only), I am plaing to check my sony constrast using Sun-TV HD 'Super Kudumpam' (Every saturday night). This program will please my eyes in terms of contrast.

What is the camera you have used to take these pictures. Is the grains due to camera? or In the picture? or in the wall pattern?

I am planing to hook my PS3 and Sundirect near to my projector with shorter branded HDMI cables. (Belkin HDMI 1.4 cables bought from Mercy electronics)

I you are going to have the loft above bathroom, There you can have one more partition for your BD & Settopbox.

Thanks Swamy for the detailed reply.

Planning to check with one of my friend who is also a builder on modifying the room to suit my needs with minimal alteration and will keep you posted.

This was taken with IPAD and the culprit for the grains seems to be the low cost hdmi cable. I tried today to replay Vishwaroopam which earlier I watched with another cable and absolute no grains, will anyway test this weekend by connecting the 2 cables alternatively.

Blu ray discs-
Most of the Hollywood movies - I order through Amazon.uk

Tamil
Low cost and quality you get in Burma bazaar- 100- 150. There is also 50GB Tamil movie disc available here for 350.
Medium cost - Adyar CD world come around 250- 300
Good quality - There is a shop inside Chandra mall fame cinemas.

Thanks Naren for the shops information. Please post vishwaroopam pictures also.
If possbile please take the pictures at 2 mega pixels 16:9 settings. (1920 x 1080)

Hello naren !
I missed your thread earlier,
Since you interested very much in HT and looking forward to construct a dedicated HT in terrace, did you thought of removing the toilet and the Loft in the room which will give you a perfect HT 13 x 20 for a big screen entertainment, provided you should be able to accommodate the guests with another room's toilet, since your's is a 4 bedroom duplex house and i also don't know the no:of members in your family so that you can manage without the toilet in the HT room.
This is my thought and the practical difficulties will be your's

Murali.

Thanks Murali and your setup with the curved screen was one of the great motivation for me to go for an exclusive HT room.

Yes even thought on this lines after going through Vinay's Thread, but unfortunately in the first floor this the only additional toilet for the guests so will not be able to touch it.

Ideally I should have joined this forum 3 years back when we started constructing the house:sad: so could have designed the house exclusively with the HT room.

I have asked my builder friend to come in the evening today to discuss on the minimum modifications that can be done in this room.

Earlier before mounting the projector, I had placed it on a rack and with slightly tilted angle not using the lens shift was able to get an image of 10ft wide approx 150".

Can I now put a wooden loft between the bathroom wall and the loft and placing the projector slightly tilted can I get a 150" image as shown below please suggest?

If you can tilt the screen also parallel plane to Lens, you can acheive this without any building alteration. But your seating positions also required to change.

NOTE: Yesterday, I have just checked on projectorreview.com site for Epson 5020, It says the best watchable mode for this projector is only around 680 lumens [Ref:Epson Home Cinema 5020 Projector Performance

In that scenario, You may required to go for High gain screens which may tends to hotspots. Download this XLS for calculation for Lumens/Screen size
CarltonBale.com ? Home Theater Calculator: Viewing Distance, Screen Size

OR

Check with others in the forum having your projector with 150" screen experience.

Swamy,

Sure will take the snaps this weekend and post.

I have also purchased a 15m MX cable for 2400 from Mercy and this seems to have made some noticeable difference.
