Cooling: Hanging a Kilo off your Motherboard?

the soldering i am talking about is not with a soldering iron . it is done with a blow torch . I use the kitchen stove to heat up the solder and get the work done .
I can help with the soldering if you need , you can PM me .

Why not get a thermalright cooler with 2*120mm 800rpm fans ? they would be virtually inaudible

Edit: Going fanless is never a good idea, unless you have very good cooling in your case which is again going to increase the noise.

Oh, yugaaa... I used to have a pro torch. Why did I give all that stuff away when I left London?

bottle, I think you are right: that or the aforementioned Scythe models. I think any of these will do the job, although I might not be satisfied first-time with the fan.

yugaaa, all things considered, I'm going to go for something brand-new out of the box, but the offers are still much appreciated.

On going fanless, again I suspect that bottle is right. I have two 120mm fans there, but would probably have to crank them up, whereas with a CPU fan could keep everything on low speed and give less noise in total.

I have three potential suppliers. The IT Depot is very near to where I live. Delta seem reliable, but parking for Ritchie St is a pain. The third would be mail order from Lynx. Any comment on favourite shops?

Stop press on this... there is a mooted family Singapore trip in March :)

I experimented doing totally fanless last time with a single core AMD , and the problem was that with no airflow to dissipate the heat the cpu temperature just kept rising (slowly but surely) untill it starts throttling. Took me about 20 minutes to ditch the idea.

This is a vfm choice IMO, Thermalright Cogage TRUE Spirit CPU Cooler Socket

and you could look at noctua, who are reputed to have some silent fans that push out a reasonable amount of air

That may be been a older cpu with 65W TDP. Was it? Going fanless should be feasible with 45W TDP CPUs and underclocking to 1ghz. Suitable for an "Audio mode" in HTPC or Audio only HAPC running custom Linux.

Of Course fanless does not mean no heatsink!! You still need to invest in a huge sophisticated heatsink then leave the fan out.
HTH

^Yes true it was an older cpu with a higher tdp but what I said was you still need *some* air flow over the heatsink to dissipate heat

I guess it is a fairly new product. I emailed them.
Isn't it nice when a company responds quickly to such an enquiry :)
Dear Mr. ... ,

thanks for contacting Noctua and for your interest in our products.

Yes, the NH-C14 is compatible with this mainboard but please note that the cooler will extend over the memory slots.
If you want to use the cooler with both fans in place, the memory modules mustn't exceed a height of 38mm. If you use just the upper NF-P14 fan you have a clearance of 61mm, which allows you to use modules with a taller heatspreader as well.

Kind regards,
Andreas Karner
Noctua support team

I feel that the downwards cooling will benefit both memory and the CPU power supply components, and may even extend to others on the board as well.

I had a concern, that these fans are not PMW controlled, but I learnt something: fan speeds on a 3-wire fan may be voltage-controlled if that option is available in the BIOS. For my board it is.

I may even splash out on a couple of Noctua 120mm fans and see if they are quieter as case fans. There are at least two other optional fan locations on my case where the existing fans could be put on low speed, so it need not be the spare-parts box for them.

Actually for case fans its time to move on to 240mm fans . Using those in my case and they are really quiet and move a lot of air

Thanks...

Now I want a Noctua NH-C14 :p

And what's more, I went and ordered one!

From Amazon USA.

I don't really want to get into the finances, because I think I screwed up and spent far more than I should have done :o :o :o .

I just noticed two things: it was a lot cheaper than shipping from UK, and a $50 gift voucher from about five years ago that I'd completely forgotten --- and hit the buy button.

Now I just have to hold my breath until it gets here, in one piece, through customs ok and all. No breathing until sometime in March! :p

Oh well... if a traditional Indian woman can keep her money in gold, then this immigrant foreigner can keep his in computer components!

(I've been splashing out on Flipkart.com, buying books, too :o )

Don't worry. Enjoy your purchases. I read somewhere 'Adults are like kids with money'. :)

Oh, absolutely! Being a shopoholic, I'd rather have the going-out, window-shopping, browsing and choosing experience, but I don't deny the childlike thrill (and frustration!) of waiting for packages to arrive. It is tinged with some uncertainty too, with international shipments.

does Amazon usa ship to India?
Yes, no, sometimes and maybe

It varies entirely according to what you are buying and who is selling it. Thus, I was lucky with the cpu cooler, but completely unable to buy a couple of Noctua 120mm fans, despite trying two or three possibilities. Similar to shopping with Amazon UK, that part of the experience is just frustrating.

I have a feeling that may be why my gift voucher got forgotten: because I was unable to spend it at the time.

^I've ordered books off them but found that for electronics I couldnt get it shipped to India. Amazon themselves have a store Amazon exports or something that ships to India but they have very limited items. Thats why was wondering.

You just have to check it on an individual-item basis. Perhaps I should have spent more time looking at the specialist buy-in-the-states services, or used Amarex. As yet I don't know how Amarex is going to work out, as it is an open-ended deal, with no real knowledge of the cost of despatch until the thing arrives, and this is quite a heavy thing.

If I was sensible, I'd have got my family in Singapore to buy it and post it, but hey, I'm not --- and they are away for a couple of weeks.

Yes! And it arrived the day before we left for Singapore.

We just got back today ... I'll fit it in a few days time.

As for buying Noctua fans in Singapore, that was a dead loss. I found some 90mm ones, but the two places in Sim Lim that sold Noctua had very little else other than a couple of cpu coolers.

I'll post a pic, once I get it installed :)
