Custom duty discussion on blu-rays imported

I ordered fast and Furious 5 BD set from amazon uk and they shipped it on 8th November but I have not received it yet. I reside at Mumbai. Any idea how many days it takes for the parcel to come to India through Standard Delivery Option?

I am still waiting on an order placed Nov 4, 2012 with an estimated delivery date of Nov 14, 2012.

I'd suggest contacting Amazon regarding non-receipt if the estimated delivery date has been crossed. I asked nicely and was pleasantly surprised, though I haven't received the package as yet. Amazon CS is the best. Unfortunately, the last leg through our customs and postal system doesn't match up to the rest of Amazon's fulfillment process.

Received Lethal Weapon Collection, Ocean's Trilogy, Coraline 3D and The Sylvester Stallone Collection yesterday.. The order was for 40.12 GBP.... Rs. 1290/- duty charged...

The fullfilment date for the item I ordered is December 18th but I am going out of Mumbai on 8th December, I will be screwed if the item comes after I leave the city...

dont worry about it just inform @ ur nearest post office/postman who visits u and they will take care of it. they will keep the product with them untill u return..just tell them the date when u will be returning .
i did the same with my parcel and they kept it with them for a week and then i collected it.

Which player do you have?
Currently only Panasonic, Toshiba and a few others can be made region free through a firmware (software) upgrade.

I bought a Samsung BD plater for 5k last year and it works good.
I haven't imported any blu ray yet.
How do I know if it's region free or needs some hack?

At the back of the player, the region code is mentioned as "A", "B" or "C".
For players purchased in the US its region "A"
For players purchased in the UK its region "B"
For players purchased in India, it will be region "C" and you will be able to play discs from region "C" as well as region free which is "A, B & C"

You will not be able to play discs from other regions other than "C".

Now, for the hack...
To play discs from other regions, you need a player which plays discs from all regions. For this you need a firmware upgrade or a hardware mod chip to be installed inside the player.
But, as per my knowledge I haven't come across any info on region free hack for Samsung players.

Your best bet would be to either buy a Panasonic or Toshiba and make it region free by firmware upgrade or import a Region B player from the UK and A from the US, though it would be very expensive.

Or, like I and many others have done... buy a Blu-ray Rom/writer for your PC and by using certain softwares, play any region discs. Only useful if your PC is connected to a receiver via HDMI otherwise small screen (monitor) and compressed audio (computer speakers).

Even then, I am searching for a dedicated Blu-ray player and decided to go for the Panasonic ... but its not available.

Not sure about the Samsung BDP's but the few Sony's I have seen have the BD region code A/B/C printed on the box and also on the rear panel of the BDP somewhere around the serial number.

Region A - US Blu-Ray players are not expensive, they are in fact cheaper than UK ones.

There are 3D players starting from $70 (Vizio, LG), $100 (Panny 220).

Even including customs, I think you can get one for under 10K.
Key is getting cheap shipping.

Best bet is to ask someone to bring it. Without box they are small and light to carry. Under 2kgs I think.

Sony was the premier partner who developed the bd standard. They endorsed all the standards. It is extremely unlikely, nay impossible, that the standard player is not region locked. There are people/companies who can jail break the player. But otherwise a Sony player is hardest to make region free.

To add to what saketb said, you have the other choices as well. You can simply buy a Region A or Region B player and not bother to make it region free. After all, I survived very well with a Region A player from 2009 to 2012. Later on you can buy another alternate region player. In the end you will have 3 players of each region. Best if you can bring this yourself or ask a friend to do it for you.

The only disadvantage is that you will have clutter or equipment.

I am hearing that Panasonic BDPs will be available from December. But you can buy from eBay as well. Here is one listing:

Panasonic Blu Ray DVD Player DMP-BD77 | eBay

The above is BD77 player which is non-3D model but costing less than 8k + shipping. It can be made region free.

Sir i m using a SONY region free player BDP S580 ...bought in March from - Sony BDP-S580 Region Free 3D Blu-ray DVD Player

how are they officially selling it?

Best Buy used to sell region free BD players under its Insignia brand. But now they stopped for some reason. They were cheap too, like $50-60 even for a 3D version.
There are some refurbished ones still available.

Its does not play different region BD out the box. You have to set the region after putting the disc. But it is better than hardware mods and firmware hacks.

110V however. You will still need an adapter.

That's correct. I meant to say that I've seen the Sony BDP's with the region code (either of A or B or C) on the rear and/or on the cardboard box.

The BDP has been hardware modified. Search for "our region free hardware modifications " on the page you linked to.

Sony officially, at least as far as I know, does not sell region free players from the BD perspective (not sure about DVD).
