Customs Duty and procedure to Import from E-commerce websites

I have ordered for a 8TB HDD from amazon.com. It says that the product will reach me by 28 june. Let's wait and watch now.

they have to settle all cases within 45 days, mandatory.

Also reading other FM's post it looks like the customs dept do not charge as per the norms and just charges as per their wish, like someone also had to pay 50% :(

Like all government departments dealing with public, they have many tricks up their sleeve to upset your Apple cart and make you pay through the nose. Best way is to approach them with a smiling face and hope for the best. If the consignment is of sizeable volume or value, it is likely to attract attention. If latter, you better let it handle by an agent.

If you happen to think that you are fleeced by the customs , send for reassessment .
If the customs officer does not seem to listen file a RTI .
Next file a court case with the info from the RTI and sue the customs for mental agony .

At least these are the steps I would take .

I approached them , they showed the calculation , they are using a formula ( which has freight , insurance landing charges etc etc) which is taking the my Rs 8416 to Rs 10k and then they are adding custom of 29.441 on it.

Finally friends went ahead paid through my nose and got them released. Half the happiness is dead though! Anyways here they are.....

Eagles - Hotel California - SACD (Japan)
Deep Purple - Machine Head - SACD (Japan)
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - SACD (Japan)
Rainbow - Rainbow - SHM-SACD (Japan)
Norah Jones - SACD (Blue Note) (US)
Blueman Group - Audio - Redbook (GB)
Massive Attack - Mezzanine - Redbook 1999 first edition (GB)

The calculations appear to be right as per rules. On the invoice value they load 22% for insurance & freight and on this, they charge the applicable duty.

That's comforting but I just believe if you don't produce something in the country and we import for personal you should either not tax it or tax it like US or UK does 9% or less. They told me from next time try and order within Rs 2500 , so that's one rare or two normal SACD at a time ......

Govt has to earn revenue from all kinda sources. You are an easy sacrificial lamb. We pay 15% tax when eating out.
Justify your extra burden by convincing yourself that a few soldiers in Siachen gets that coveted fresh green chilli with daily ration :D
Cheers,
Raghu

Just check if it is 2,000 or 2,500 free limit or USD 20?

Rs 2k is safe. A envelope packaging goes unnoticed mainly for CDs.
subject to the tender mercies of the Indian post, with no tracking. Many suppliers Iin another thing i spend money on) refuse to ship to India because of "leakages"
