I am planning to buy a 40 inch TV sometime soon. I had been to Reliance Digital last weekend and from all the TVs on display, Sony seemed to have the best clarity.

In Sony, I am confused between EX650 and HX850. The reason for the confusion is because I saw in Ebay that EX650 is around 47k while HX850 is around 90k. The advantage in HX850 is 3D and better clarity. 3D is not very important for me, but is the double cost justified for the better clarity?

Thanks in advance for all the replies.

cest percent justified for HX.
but at the same time you will get best picture at much less price in 42 inch plasmas from panasonic.XT at 47k.UT at 60k.
those pictures are way beyond EX series of sony.
HX and ST series from panasonic are equal...some find this better,some that.
42 inch ST can be had by a damage around 75k...much les than HX.

entry level plasmas from samsung at 34k,38k are also worth to buy.can demo it.
if buying sony,dont buy from e bay,not with manufactuerer warranty,so price is less than sony showrooms.HX is costlier than 90k.and EX is around 56k......

can demo UT 50 inch 75k panasonic full hd plasma....totally worth it.

Have u even checked EX series...it's equally good in terms of HD pic quality of XT series or so..note it got the same x-reality processor as HX series where HX got another extra XCA7 processor to boost its pic quality equally good to ST series.

Get the HX850 if it comes under your budget or else get EX650, avoid plasma, you wont like to be stuck with Image burn in etc which is not even covered under warranty by plasma companies.

yes cosider IR issues and taking care/maintanenace hassle of plasmas.
read detail IR issue.
but at the same time they provide the best picture also consider that.

What content do you watch? If you are mostly watching DTH/Cable (>90%) then EX650 is good enough. Go for HX850 only if you are watching a lot of movies, true HD (1080p) stuff via blu-ray or high quality rips (such content exceeding 40%). Only then the extra amount invested in HX850 will be rewarded.

@prosenjit,
I did consider plasma, however the highly reflective screen put me off. I could see all the lights reflected on the TV screen and this is a very practical problem for me. Also, I read online that the black levels are not so black in plasma after a year or 2 of usage. So, plasma is ruled out.
Regarding ebay, I am getting a new TV for that price with bill and 1 year warranty. Is it still not safe to buy it from ebay?

@just4kix,
I will mostly watch DTH, but during weekends, I will watch 1 or 2 HD movies. The movies will mostly be BR rips. I am sure I won't download more than 4GB rips.

Regarding budget, I have still not decided on the budget. As I said before, I will go for HX only if the picture quality is much better to justify the almost double price as compared to EX.

BTW, now I plan to buy the TV only this year end (shifting to my new house got delayed). So, more time for research :)

Plasma produces much brilliant pictures but does suffer from reflective surface (it is glass afterall). The high end plasmas have this effect much reduced by adding black filters. Also one should not go by what one sees in a showroom where there are huge glass panels, brilliant light, open spaces that cause reflections, etc. At home things are different. If at home, the windows can be covered via heavy drapes and lights dimmed, the plasma picture will outstrip the standard LED.

Regarding EX650 vs. HX850: A typical BD is 35+ GB (uncompressed). When it is compressed to 4G, the quality is downgraded significantly. It is the same difference between an original DVD (7 GB) to DVix AVI (700 mb). I will repeat that though HX850 will yield brilliant PQ, your needs can be sufficed by EX650. Note that quality does not necessarily mean best - quality is conformance to requirements. You can save money on 40" HX850 and go for a 46" EX650 for less.
