Hi guys just a lil bit of information needed. I have a marantz SR6009. For movies it's on auto mode but I prefer to have the sub off for music through vinyl. Hence I use the direct or pure direct mode.

I noticed that even in these modes, the sub still plays although little softer. Shudnt the sub just turn off automatically on direct or pure direct modes? Speakers set to small and LFE+ main 120 Hz.

Can someone explain why the sub still plays in direct modes!?

Direct & Pure direct shuts off some video processing circuitry and process the received signal..

Change the setting to LFE only under bass management and use the direct/ pure direct..

In my old Onkyo AVR, Pure audio for stereo will keep the fronts as large and no signal sent to subwoofer.. But the newer Denon AVR has slightly different settings... LFE and LFE + Main..Marantz also should be similar..

I made it LFE also and checked. The sub still plays. I thought direct modes were purely direct and sound should only be reproduced by my fronts.

If your fronts are set to Large, set to small in speaker settings.. This should send full range signal to your BS, Use Pure Direct..

Done that as well, speakers are set to small. All this is already checked buddy, still I get sound from the sub in direct modes.

Oops.. Am sorry..I meant set your fronts to Large, if it is set to small in speaker settings.. This should send full range signal to your BS, Use Pure Direct..

Try using stereo mode n the AVR as well and check..

Nope, setting speakers to large still gets sound from sub in direct mode.

However setting all zone stereo disables the sub so to speak.

Was reading on some other forums as well regarding modes on marantz, lots of them share the same experience as me.... kinda strange.

OK.. Switch to LFE + mains in bass management, set fronts to Large and you can switch the sub off..( If you switch on it will still be functional)..

Yeah that can be done, but I thought the point of having a direct mode is to eliminate the sub and just give pure unmixed signal to the fronts. If I have to press so many buttons on the remote each time I change between movies and music, what's the point of the pure direct button on the remote.

True..This is how it used to work in Onkyo AVR.. Sub never kicsk in Pure Audio mode.. Juz 2.0..

But looks like Marantz & Denon have different approach..

Not sure on the recent denons, but the older ones, the sub does not come in pure direct. it comes on in stereo mode though

LOL!:lol::lol:

It does on my sr6009 marantz, would like to hear from other marantz users to confirm.

The below notes are from Marantz SR6009 Manual..

Pure Direct playback

This mode is for playback with higher sound quality than in Direct playback mode.
This mode turns off the main unit display and analog video circuit. Doing so suppresses noise sources that affect sound quality.
Press PURE to select Pure Direct.
The display goes dark, and Pure Direct playback begins.
The PURE DIRECT indicator lights.

In Direct and Pure Direct sound modes, the following items cannot be adjusted.
Tonelink
M-DAX link
MultEQ XT link
Dynamic EQlink
Dynamic Volumelink
Graphic EQ link
This can also be set by pressing PURE DIRECT on the main unit.

NOTE Video signals are only output when HDMI signals are played in the Pure Direct mode.
When the Pure Direct mode has been selected, the display turns off after about 5 seconds.

Oh stereo, direct and pure direct discussion. Neither of them are are as pure as a stereo amplifier.

In simplest of terms, pure direct only engages pre amp for volume and main amplifier to drive the speakers. Rest everything is turned off. Compared to this, the Direct mode has its analog video sources enabled.

Hdmi input works on all modes due to the pass through feature.

For more detailed differences, i would refer to numerous articles available online as no single article I am aware of has covered all the points.

As long as the AVR knows that there is a SUB connected which can handle frequencies below 120Hz, sound would be re-directed to it irrespective of the mode. Only difference would be in pure-direct or Straight (on Yamaha), it would be like a 2.1 configuration without the equalizer/DSP processing. If all sound is needed to be directed only through the bookshelf then sub-woofer should be set to NO in the AVR which would mean fronts would be set to LARGE and low frequencies sent via LR channels only. Note: Your bookshelves should be capable of handling lower frequencies (< 120Hz), there are chances of damage if they are not rated to handle that low frequencies. BTW I'm a Yamaha user :) , hope that helps...
