One more thing i need to understand from u guys. If u guys are familiar with bbay and have been here in the recent past how would u compare chennai to bbay? Is chennai totally crumbling too, is the influx of people everyday just crippling the age old infrastructure? Is the man on the street just too rude or too inconsiderate to care? Is everything now 'chalta hai boss'?These are the things that made me ramble about the monotony of bbay life venkat. Am sure its bad all over our country, am just not certain its as bad.

Its certainly a great sound track - when you hear it, what comes across is the magic of Pink Floyd and a certain lightly humorous and wry cynicism, at no point is a depressive state communicated in the performance.

At the outset, these are my personal views so no offence meant to anybody.
The growth of the city is certainly putting enormous pressure on the city's infrastructure. The roads have too much traffic, there are no footpaths, and, a little rain, pedestrians are forced walk in the middle of the road. In most roads you will be happy if you can drive at more than 20KMPH.
The lack of enough buses have resulted in something called a 'share auto'. This is a small three wheeled or four wheeled vehicle that carries something like 10 or 12 people packed like sardines. The drivers of these share autos are kings of the road. They drive where they want, park where they want, and honk at you continuously.
Two wheeler drivers and drivers of three wheeler autos are what I call 'cockroaches'. If they see an inch some where, they will just poke their nose in and create an instant traffic jam. Traffic rules and traffic lights have no meaning for them.
Two days of rain, and the roads are full of water. All the roads develop instant pot holes which are invariably 'repaired' just before the next rains. The Municipal Corporation, makes heroic efforts to help people from water logged areas, but I cannot understand why they can never think of a long term solution. Something like 50,000 new houses are coming up in a 10 KM stretch with no sanitation, no waste disposal, no water and other basic infrastructure mechanism in place.
In all these cases, the state government and police have been a complete failure. In a conversation sometime ago, when I posed this question to the Police Commissioner, he just shrugged his shoulders and said there are too many vehicles, and people have to follow rules. And what are his people doing? Giving protection to VIPs, and blocking traffic when some idiotic leader is driving somewhere.
The culture of the city is also changing. The city is becoming more cosmopolitan. Most restaurants and beauty parlours are now overflowing with young girls from Nepal, Bhutan, NEFA, and Arunachal Pradhesh. I am sure, in time, this will lead to the inevitable exploitation of these girls by unsavoury elements. People without jobs in the northern states are flowing in hordes into the city and changing the landscape of the city. Road anger is becoming very common as is the use of rude language in everyday conversation.
The city has it's areas that behave differently. North Chennai is changing dramatically allowing the influx of people. South Chennai is more sedate with house owners being careful in the kind of tenants they take in.
The state government is competing with Mumbai, and is creating a financial district spread over some 200 acres. This will only add to more people shifting to the city and more confusion.
Fortunately, some areas of the official mechanism is yet sticking to old age ideas intermixed with modern e-governance. E-Governance is Chennai is one of the best in the country. Every aspect of the official machinery is computerised and you can access everything through the Net. Paying things like water tax and property tax is a breeze, as is getting water, milk, gas, etc.
Though there are some instances of violence, Chennai (touch wood) is yet peaceful, and people do not walk around with lathis in their hand. But I am very much afraid it is only a question of time.
My wife and I have decided to retire in Coimbatore and are already looking at property there that we can occupy in some 10 to 15 years.

I love Chennai for its tradition,art,music,cinema,the beaches,quality schools/ colleges and hospitals.Though the last mentioned two have become very commercial.
The Chennaites are a friendly lot in general.People helping strangers in distress on the road is a common site.
Monsoon makes this city burst at its seams.I really wish the govt will seek to put a long lasting solution.You have to see to believe the hardship people in low lying areas go through when it rain heavily.
The law and order is relatively good compared to many cities in our country.As far as i know there is no communal divide here.In this aspect Chennai is truly cosmopolitan. The City Bus system is also better i think, than what i have seen in other cities.

Once when i was driving through the mayhem near the Kottpurpuram bridge the car before mine braked suddenly and i couldn't avoid a little bump into him.The guy turned with anger.But when i raised my hand and mouthed the word 'sorry' he merely smiled and raised his hand acknowledgement.How i wish every one can react like him.

I would have suggested the mono remasters - much, much nicer than the stereo versions (specially Sgt. Pepper's). Abbey Road is not available in Mono though

Cranky, I remember reading somewhere that Beatles were the first in the world to be recorded in 4 track tapes. If this is true, I am sure they can be remastered in stereo.

Dinyaar - I am envious of you being able to play on that many actual cricket wickets at Bombay. Here we dont have that much choice. Unless you are playing in a TNCA league team, chances are you dont get to play on turf wickets. We are playing in a tournament which does give us the opportunity to play on wickets, but I am not liking the pitches. On those wickets we can as well start off bowling spin and continue from there. It is pretty pointless to run in and try anything.
If you do come to Chennai sometime, plan it on a weekend and after meeting up fellow Chennai Hifivisionaries, we can have a game of cricket. Or, if nothing at least have a net session.
About me being active, I dont know for how long I will be able to play actively and maintain whatever little fitness I have. So...touch wood.

Tamilnadu infrastructure is certainly better managed than Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra. As for why no long term quality repair work or road laying is done - its really the biggest scam in India. Contractors keep getting payouts in crores for annual repairs and babu's keep getting the kickbacks for awarding the contract year after year. Likewise Dam's in india are not built because the people need them - otherwise we would have a 10,000 mini dams and bunds across India like the well managed water works of many centuries back. It does not take an unusually intelligent mind or a highly specialized education for one to realize that these smaller structures conserve water and maintain the local ecological balance. Instead we have large super dams that drown and destroy a million creatures small and large when they are commissioned, leaving a trail of ecological destruction behind them, and ultimately fail to solve the water problems of the masses. So why are these super dams built? Kickbacks and corruption again. Vested interests in the government are always searching for avenues to "spend" public money so a "healthy" part of the cash flow returns to their private pockets. So bridges are built when the need arises to award a contract and share the kickback booty - not because the people have been suffering for years for lack of infrastructure.

I travelled extensively in india and abroad as a kid. Parents took me to see all of India,all the wild life sanctuaries, all the monuments, all the places of worship. Kashmir was an annual affair and i feel blessed considering the sad plight of that state in the present. Now sadly i always travel abroad. Its not being snooty its just a sad fact. Had been to chennai last in 1982. My wife makes up as she travels on work to bglore/delhi/chennai almost every month.
Bombay was a marvellous city to live in. South bbay was a dream. Beautiful coastal city, good roads and every thing worked. Somewhere in the last 3 decades it just crumbled. Everyone of us living here is responsible for this collapse in some small way or the other and then there are the 'rascals' who are responsible in 'the larger ways'.
The 92blasts & the riots that followed change my perception of our city. Before that it was not this communal. Civic infrastructure was among the best in the country (it sadly may still be which does not speak much for our cities)and the most important of all was the culture of the people. U always had the rotten apples but by & large, a peaceful society. As a teen u could roam the streets at 2 Am and would feel absolutely safe. Unescorted women were safe which says a lot. IMO safer than most other metros of the developed world.
Now it seems that its one large slum. The filth defies logic but its home!!!!!
It irks no end when on TV its called everything from the MEGA CITY, CITY OF DREAMS...... when they talk of the spirit of bbay, the resilience...... it blows my mind. Its more that most of the people here (including myself) are numb now!!!!
Actually i was very much in the Stock exchange when the BSE blast occured in 92.In fact had just been granted a license to trade. Was just after trading hours and i was just winding up my orders and leaving when a huge explosion rocked the bldg and the TV monitors & glass cieling fell. HAd no clue what happened and just looked around at the commotion. Most of us inside were more or less Ok but the poor vendors outside were all finished. The cops ran in and created more confusion and just evacuated the entire bldg. It was only when i reached out that i felt some pain in my head,right ear had started bleeding. I guess the impact of the blast in a confined space had made most guys bleed a bit from the ears.
That day changed most things for most of us in bbay. The series of blasts all over in the next few hours set the tone for what continues till today.
Icing on the cake was the recent terrorist strikes and the aftermath and the ridiculous trial currently underway.
Some of u guys have already got ur retirement plans in place!! At the moment i cant think that far.
