I recently bought Sony DAV-340 HT, my LCD TV does not have ARC hence connected audio output to HT using headphone out. While playing DVD movie from DVD drive of HT i am getting good surround sound. MY question is if i play same movie from USB drive of LCD TV, will i get same kind of 5.1 sound ?
When i played same movie through USB i do not found it as good as played through HT.

Check whether your lcd supports 5.1 dolby digital. If yes then let us know what cable you are using for audio connection. You should use coaxial/optical digital output cable to enjoy 5.1 surround effect.

If your TV can do DD/DTS 5.1 pass through via digital out (coaxial / optical) and your HT has a digital input (which it should) you will be able to get 5.1 surround out from the HT.

presently you are not getting any true surround by the way....
yes when you play usb you will get same quality.....the 2 to 6 pseudo surround effect.....

The downloaded movie must be encoded with DD 5.1 sound also. DVix movies contain mp3 sound and MKV movies may not be having it either.

Bravia 32BX350 supports Dolby Digital. I am using Bandridge BAL3401 3.5 mm Stereo M 2 x RCA cable to connect audio out to HT. HT does not have optic in port.

You will get only Stereo sound out of it. Your AVR may make it virtual surround if you select so in it. Genuine Dolby sound can't be passed via a 3.5mm cable.

Sony DAV-DZ340 has a built in DVD player and supports Dolby Digital and DTS, so when you are playing a DVD having multi-channel audio encoded either in Dolby Digital or DTS format then you are getting 5.1 channel separation. Dolby Digital or DTS are digital streaming they can not pass through an analogue output. Your TV's headphone out is an analogue out and it delivers only stereo format. You have to hook your HT with your TV either by HDMI (having ARC) or by Optical/Digital Coaxial (SPDIF) cable to get 5.1 audio.

I read somewhere that even with HDMI (having ARC), it pass two channel output which is not true 5.1. Its slight improvement over analogue. Is this true ?

No, not at all.
The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data upstream to an A/V receiver, increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF or optical Toslink audio connection. HDMI (ARC) technology does not down mix any multichannel digital audio to two channel stereo, it pass only the digital audio data.

Does HDMI ARC (upstream to AVR) work for HDMI downstream audio only? That is, suppose the audio is from a movie on USB drive. Will the HDMI return the audio to AVR via ARC?

Would like this to be tested in real life and not speculated or given web site examples.

Yes.
If you can listen to audio through TV speakers, you can send that audio via ARC to AVR, regardless of whether it is connected via USB or HDMI.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
