DTS/Dolby 5.1 from laptop's HDMI out

Hi.
I have a Pioneer AV receiver and Jamo speaker system.
The receiver support DTS/DD and has coaxial and optical inputs.

I am planning to buy a laptop with Blu Ray drive and HDMI o/p. But my receiver does not support HDMI i/p.
I am also planning to buy an LCD TV with optical output.

My doubts:
1) If I connect HDMI from the laptop to TV and optical out from TV to my receiver, will I get DTS/DD? (I know that my receiver doesn't support DTS HD Master or Dolby HD, so DTS/DD is fine for me)
2) Is there any other option to get the DTS/DD optical or coaxial from my laptop's HDMI o/p.

Additional info: my current Acer laptop has optical o/p and I am getting perfect DD from that in my receiver.

simple way is to connect HDMI to TV & take spdf out from laptop to AVR.
If you try your way and if TV cant decode DD/Dts,you may not get sound from TV optical out.

if you can correctly setup the SW (MPC-HC, Cyberlink etc) to pass DTS/DD unprocessed through HDMi to TV and if TV can pass it unprocessed to the AVR via optical yes this is possible.

else get a external 5.1 soundcard (express card slot/usb)for your laptop that will pass 5.1 DTS/DD thorugh optical and coaxial which yoru receiver can process.

since your laptop has optical out.. connect it directly to AVR.. you will require audio settings in your software which plays movies to send audio over optical (unprocessed DD/DTS)..

connect TV directly with laptops via HDMI.. disable audio on HDMI..

Guys his original question has still not been answered. All answers have been given with respect to his current laptop which has an optical out.

The new laptop that he's planning to get, has a HDMI out. And he wants to know if he can get the 5.1 DD/DTS signal from his HDMI out on laptop through this TV which has optical out.

Anoop, I'd think most of the new gen plasmas/LCDs which have the optical out, would be able to decode DD 5.1 only. So most probably, you'd get the DD 5.1 output easily to your receiver. However for DTS it's gonna be tough.

Like one of the others suggested, maybe you can look at an external sound card with an optical out for your new laptop, which should make the connection straight forward (provided that external sound card supports DTS decoding). Otherwise even then you'd end up only with DD 5.1 output.

Another option, is to see if you can get a notebook dock unit (like it's available for my HP Pavilion DV6-1154TX with HDMI but no optical out), which would have lots of ports mostly including an optical out. The only reason I've not bought it is because it costs around 8k and I thought that much wasn't worth it. Also, I have a WDTV HD Media Player which has HDMI out and optical out and solves my problem.

If you're gonna be using your laptop mainly to play your DD/DTS 5.1 movies, then you have only 2 options:

(1) try an external sound card with DTS support and optical out
(2) see if you can get a notebook dock with the optical out

option 2 is a simple exercise of choosing the spdif option in the control panel and this is the option which you should normally choose.

option 1, can be done, but you'll have to do an EDID override and mute the sound on your tv speakers. (google EDID override). basically your tv's edid will tell the lappy that it can only accept 2 channel pcm. with an edid override you "fool" the lappy into sending a dd signal to the tv. if you have digital audio out from the tv you can send that signal to the receiver.
be sure the mute the tv speakers, coz the tv will try to decode the DD signal as pcm ( horrible speaker damaging digital noise)

I think External Sound Card is a good option.
So the first option I had given (utilising TV opt out) may need some tricks.
And I still have some doubts on the second option. I believe that if in the Media Player s/w or audio options of Windows/Driver I specify DD or DTS, the lappy's HDMI should carry HD video and DD or DTS audio, not DTS HD master or Dolby True HD. In that case I believe there should be a switch available which will just separate (no processing) audio to SPDIF coax/opt and HD video to HDMI.
So is there any such switch?
